What's the polite way to get out of such a situation?

I'm quite a 'nooooo touchy' person at the best of times (I rarely even hug close family members) but a guest at work shook my hand then went in for a hug. I went along with it as he seemed really nice and he might have had learning difficulties but I hated a stranger getting into my personal space in such a way and it made me feel awkward. Any subtle ways of getting out of such a situation?!

Den of Iniquity

Just say you have a cold or the flu and you shouldn't get that close. Sorted

Tell him you have an avoidant personality, it’s nothing personal but if he tries to get close you’ll knee him in the balls

I know people who simply say "I don't do hugs," and offer a hand

^ .

Being firm and clear does not have to mean being in polite. If you think the chap maybe learning impaired then that's all the more reason to use simple language.

In a town Fab forgot

I lower my centre of gravity, dropping my balance back onto my right leg, raise my left arm in an arc and side sweep their arms away.

Drop down and punch them in the slar plexus.

*by the way, sorry about that mum.

Joking aside, extend your hand to shake, along with a firm sorry, I don't do hugs, smiling why you say it.

"Do you fuck through a sheet ??"

See this part of the ops post; "hated a stranger getting into my personal space in such a way and it made me feel awkward."

Stranger.

Personal space.

Awkward.

The clues are all there.....

Manchester (she/her)

I've not employed this myself, but the hand you're not using to shake: extended like a stop signal in the middle of your chest, and move it forwards. Natural barrier.

Try turning and moving away right before the handshake ends your body language will be more closed then . They'll just have the 'cold shoulder' to look at then.

I’m the same as the op , I really dislike my personal space being invaded by strangers .

However , if it’s people with learning issues , it could create a very uncomfortable environment as they will feel rejected and my react in a very negative way .

Suck it up I think is the only way , and try to be a bit more evasive with the use of the other arm maybe ?

I have a friend that hates hugs, people just laugh and hug him anyway.
