Don’t suffer in silence, talk to someone.

Today I heard someone from my past has been suffering with mental health issues in silence and ended their struggle.

NO ONE SHOULD SUFFER

If you ever need anyone to talk to, send me a message, I’m no trained expert and I by no means have all (if any of the answers). But I would hate to hear of another person suffering in silence or ending their struggle in isolation because they felt no one was their to listen.

I might not know you or we may have spoken on here or in real life, if you need an ear to listen and someone to talk to in confidence then I will listen.

Very true OP, a worthy statement.

Everyone suffers with their own personal demons and often hide behind a smile, talking is a good way to help.

I would echo the sentiment and say if anyone needs to chat, please feel free.

Am sorry to hear that.

Have been there over the past few months since Christmas, luckily I have had excellent support from my doctor, kids and Si and have turned the corner, still have bad days but they are easier to work through and feel so much better in myself. It isn't a nice place to be but it does better to those still going through it. X storm x

I’m schizophrenic and bipolar, it took me years to stop ‘self medicating’ and finally talk to someone.

I’m sad that there’s still a stigma attached to mental health problems, when I was a sinbgle on here I actually had people stop talking to me once I’d told them, but day by day I feel like people are becoming more and more aware and the stigma is going

Great post OP

Obligatory mention of the Samaritans as a resource, but also to ask people to consider volunteering for them. Always need more listeners (PMs for info welcome!)

I've had low periods since Nov last year events during Feb and March bought things to a head.

After a low status update the amount of strangers on hear checking if I was OK was totally heart warming.

Thankfully life has turned around and things are so much different for me now.

Very commendable post op.

It’s great to hear from people that have found help from family, friends and fellow Fabbers.

We’re not a bad bunch really and I’m sure almost all of us would be there for a Fabber if needed.

Sometimes we just need to let others know.

Happy Fabbing all.

Great post OP. Another shout out for the Samaritans. To have someone at the end of the phone who would talk in a calm and non judgemental way has in previous years been a valuable asset to me.

Nice one OP

Great post OP.

I wanted to talk about the stigma around mental health: I’m very upfront about my mental health, because it’s not as ‘serious’ as other conditions, and in my case is very easily treated. I have anxiety and depression. I take antidepressants.

Any time mental health comes up in conversation, I tell people about what it’s like in my experience to have mental health issues. I allow them to ask questions. It’s not for everyone to do this, but I do, because if we talk about it, we give others the opportunity to understand.

Excellent post OP and thanks for raising this. I'd be very interested to understand what benefit being in Fab has to people (like me) with mental health difficulties. Personally, as I'm becoming more and more part of this community, it's starting to feel like a friendly and supportive group I wish I'd always had.

It’s sad that the stigma is about. But by talking, being open and honest, plus informing we can help to break down the stigma and help others.

In words of Big Bob Hoskins it good to talk, seriously it. After my own hard times and seeing the effects my previous profession on people I can't ignore it in others. So I try and be there to talk to and people do. I know expert but things feel a lot better if you simply have a safe space and someone to trust just talk it all through with. I know it helped with me once I opened up to people. So know I make my self avalible as an ear and support to others. It often seem more difficult for men to open up and this has to end. My must end the taboo and stigma around difficult subjects and false concept it is weakness. We are all human. Keep up the good work. If more of us can be there others and more of us can feel safe to open up this will be a better world.

I have nothing further to add to this post that hasn’t already been said.

I just thought I’d put that I’ve suffered with mental health issues, and the stigma attached to this finally seems to be disappearing.

I’m also happy to talk to anyone that wants to or needs to.

Good post OP, I hope more people see it

So much respect!!

Another support group albeit not totally nationwide (yet) but if they're near you check them out

Andy's Man Club.

Google and Facebook searches will bring them up easily enough. I've attended a couple of sessions and they are amazing

So sorry for the loss of your friend. Mental illness is still a very taboo topic for some people, but the more people talk about it, the more acceptable it will become. I've lived with depression since childhood, I'm on meds and I see a psychologist regularly, and I'm able to live with my condition most of the time. When it gets too much, I cry it out and sleep it off and it generally passes quickly when I do that. I think acknowledging the feelings and sitting with them a while makes it easier to let go, while denying the feelings and burying them only makes it harder.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Depression, anxiety and panic attacks are NOT a sign of weakness. The are a sign of having tried to remain strong for too long

We're all walking around with these glossy eyes.

"I am just tired", we say.

But you know what? It's bullshit.

Yes, we are tired, but it's not all from lack of sleep.

We are tired of waking up with nothing to look forward to,

tired of going to bed exhausted after doing a million things we find no enjoyment in doing.

We are tired of this void, this emptiness that looms over us even though we're surrounded by dozens of people.

So why can't we just say it?

Humans are so afraid to look into each others eyes and say: "I am unhappy, I am broken, I am hopeless and fallible."

We've been conditioned to associate pain with weakness, sadness with coldness, loneliness with unworthiness, difference with disease,

as if these feelings are contagious, as if ambivalence is something not be felt but to be feared.

Well, i say screw it all of that.

Screw forced smiles and polite handshakes and "I am fine, thank yous" .

Screw the fear of crying in a public place, screw the fake chipper voice, screw the lies we spit out to cover up our problems.

We are humans.

We are ment to feel.

To feel everything and to feel it openly. We are not metal - we are flesh and bone.

Our boiled blood courses through our cold, clammy hands. We are intricate and beautiful and we should never hide our human part, because if we do, then

what's left to show?

(Juni)
