Saltash aka Fraggle Rock

I need advice someone I know 4 weeks got seved an eviction notice as Landlord is selling the house, the eviction notice ends today. The person in question has physical and mental disabilities. Will the Council help them with something short term and then possibly long term

Contact the local council for advise. Do you have independent children ?

They might get emergency housing in a B and B.

No they have no children. They have an appointment this afternoon with a housing officer x

Check their tenancy agreement, most stipulate a two month period if it is mid way through the term. Why have they waited for the 4 weeks to run out before doing anything about it?

They have been doing things about it but nobody hs wanted to help

If they are being evicted they will receive a letter from the bailiffs to take to the council.

If they're a vulnerable adult they'll be put in temporary accommodation. When it comes to rehousing, ,singles without children are last on the list.

I think as long as there is an official letter with a date of contract termination on it, they can go to the local council and apply for emergency housing. They might get rushed through the system and given high priority

Under the Homelessness Reduction Act they will be entitled to a personal housing plan exploring their options and what is available to them. Take any letters from landlord to housing office, take any evidence of vulnerability to the housing office and there is indeed useful letters and info on the Shelter website on rights and how to proceed, especially with the new Act coming into force since April.

It sounds like there is a priority need.

Shekinah Mission is an excellent homeless charity (Torquay) nearish you, that may be useful for more localised advice.

Admittedly the council officers don’t always get their info right. The introduction of the Homelessness Reduction Act serves to help people get better and clearer advice, and the letters and guides on both Shelter and Crisis websites are worth taking with you to the housing office. And if the answer is given as no, gaining coach support from a charity to help advocate further, not only to aid you but also to help educate misinformed housing officers.

I was told the same.

Served an eviction notice. Council homeless section refused to help as i had "left of my own violation" and "did not need to move out" i had made myself "voluntry homeless"

So i lived in my car for a period of weeks as no BnB or any kind of temp accomadation was offerd. Its not ways black and white.

It’s definitely not black and white. Apologies if you feel I was saying it was. Again, my point I’m trying to clarify is the changes in terms of the expectations of better advice post April 2018, and that sometimes the officers themselves aren’t always clear. We advocate and overturn decisions regularly where we have found councils provided the erroneous info somehow.

However, with scant knowledge of a specific situation it’s very hard to know.
