In Ireland we say pants for trousers. Underwear /shorts/jocks/boxers etc... Would be used instead of the word pants.

The outerwear item is definitely called a pair of trousers in the uk. "Pants" is a generic term for male and female underwear in this country. One of my friends is always talking about (for example) "that bloke in the grey pants" and I will never let him do so without querying how he knows the colour of a random guy's underwear.

Almost as bloody annoying as use of the term "train station" when people mean "railway station" (or just "station"), or people that mix up "non" and "none". Who got me started on this subject...!
