"Who remembers certain television programmes that used to be broadcast many years ago before watershed that were scary as hell? I know a couple but they never scared me as these were way before my time known as Tales of the Unexpected and Armchair Thriller. The first time I saw these was on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments which showed clips of an episode of each show which were TOTU's Royal Jelly and AT's Quiet as a Nun. Both episodes sure were creepy especially with the guy sort of turning into a bee and the faceless nun in the attic. There is one episode I did find disturbing from TOTU were the it reveals that the landlady has been turning her guests into human taxidermists. The thought of how she does it still makes me shudder. " Roald Dahl was a complete genius

"Tales Of The Unexpected scared the shit out of me as a kid, not least an episode called, ‘Flypaper’ (I think) wherein a girl is followed by a sinister man throughout and just when she appears to have found sanctuary at the end, the typical twist is that the woman who seems to be her saviour is in fact in alliance with the stalker(!) " That one is on YouTube I think it's a different writer though.

"Blimey, i am old enough to remember the origunal showing of Tales of the unexpected and remember Royal jelly very well I remember the theme tune and the sexy silhouette lady dancin'. But then it was bedtime." I have a recreated version of the theme on the 100 Halloween Hits album. It's funny how it sounds light and sort of happy which I think was the intention so that it catches you off guard when a scary moment pops up.

"ITV did a one off ghost hunt thing in a suburban 2 up, 2 down house. A few people committed suicide afterwards it was that scary (if memory serves me right). ITV had to come out afterwards, apologise and admit it was staged." That sounds very similar to what happened on Ghostwatch as an 18 year old lad committed suicide a few days later as it scared him that much and it gave some kids Ptsd as well.

Did this programme you saw have a ghost called Pipes and a scene where a girl named Susan gets possessed saying "what big eyes you have" in a low deep voice?

There was more to it than just a previously fine kid commiting suicide but the BBC got a public rap from the BSC as it went out before 9pm and wasn't clear about being fictional.

"The opening credits and music for tales of the unexpected scared me. But what gave me nightmares was ghostwatch a one of halloween special on bbc for most of the show we thought it was real. Before that there was a kids TV show with Fenella the Kettle Witch from Chorlton and the Wheelies And the banana splits scared me. Saying that looking back on Jamie and his magic touch opening credits looks like it was filmed on LSD" Remember that awesome intro guitar chord when Jamie shines his torch on the floor?

It was broadcast then instantly banned. Although you can get the DVD. Watched it at the time (think I was about 14) and again about 4 years ago on DVD. Utter shite. Maelstrom - wax dolls - mad sister - rabid dogs. Fire in the end and all the dolls melting. Now that WAS scary.

"The only bit I remember about Ghostwatch is when the face started to appear on the monitors. Dr Who has to get a mention surely. I grew up watching John Pertwee and Tom Baker and some episodes did genuinely scare me. " The Pertwee era especially, boasts the scariest episodes in the entire series for me (The Daemons, Inferno, The Sea Devils etc.) and is helped immeasurably by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s highly weird and wonderful soundscapes

There was a freaky episode wherein a family find themselves trapped in their house as the temperature keeps rising. The final twist was that the family were in fact dolls in a doll house all along and that a kid had put the house in an oven to piss off his little sister That sounds very similar to a Twilight Zone episode where a soldier, a clown, a ballerina, a hobo and a scotsman were trapped in a circular cell and the twist was they were actually dolls in a Christmas toy donation bin. The Twighlight Zone used to freak me out to - not least Rod Serling himself The theme tune of The Twilight Zone used to scare me as a kid. https://youtu.be/XVSRm80WzZk" The Outer Limits was another good and creepy one and came back better than ever in the early 1990’s.......complete with copious nudity

"Hammer House of Horror was pretty scary, the Hitchhiker with the Black fingernail stands out, as do the children of the forest one with Diana Dors The House That Bled To Death gave me a few sleepless nights. That one was filmed just near me Also does anyone remember the sister series, Hammer House Of Mystery & Suspense? There was an episode with these space spiders that had human faces. They looked so creepy but reminded me of the submarine Grampus from the classic kids programme Tugs.

"the X files first series had some naughty ones" I loved the X-Files series 1-9 but was more than a tad disappointed with it’s recent two series return. Gillian Anderson has stated she won’t be back so the show seems to have been shelved indefinitely now Give Skinner his own series say I

"Blimey, i am old enough to remember the origunal showing of Tales of the unexpected and remember Royal jelly very well I remember the theme tune and the sexy silhouette lady dancin'. But then it was bedtime." I think those credits were considered soft porn back then..

"999 was always a good watch. I do recall people saying how the intro used to scare them as kids and I can understand why. The music is basically the classic nee naa from ambulances and the intro itself is almost apocalyptic with buildings on fire, people being rescued from raging rivers and ambulances driving fast like they're in a war zone." Here's the theme to the 999 programme. https://youtu.be/QA4fXdxPelE

"Terrorhawks zelda" I loved that show. It never scared me but I can see why seeing that some of the characters especially Zelda do look pretty scary. There was one character on the show that I thought looked creepy called M.O.I.D with a face resembling a skull covered in wrinkled skin but I felt really sorry for him as he says himself that he has no face and very little will of his own.

" BBC made a fake documentary with Mike Smith and Sarah green early 90s went out supposedly live on Halloween, it was about polterguist and ended suddenly when they portrayed spirit had taken over the camera by getting into it, if they hadn't rolled credits after a short pause I don't think I would have watched TV again " That was indeed Ghostwatch.

"When I was really little, there was a kids tv show from czechoslovakia (I think) called The Singing Ringing Tree. It was freaky as fuck and scared the hell out of me. " Remeber that well. Used to give me nightmares. One episode where the midget character made a thorny hedge grow instantly around someone, still brings back terrifying memories

"I vaguely remember a film about a house full of adults and something about silver bullets (so presume werewolf) one of the guest looked like Richard Prior and there was a scene where a stop watch was ticking. Scared the crap out of me, would love to revisit it and see what the fuss was about. Was in the days of three channels so about 79-80 ish, but don't know what it was called. Any ideas peeps" Just got a message from Janno17 who rightly pointed out that this film is a Hammer Production, its called The Beast Must Die and the Richard Prior lookilikey was Calvin Lockhart - Good Man

Bit of a sad ending for our hero but he was so damn cool throughout!

" The Quatermas experiment Watched with the lights out Had me hiding behind the sofa!
