FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK TWENTY FIVE!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!

I’m so sorry for neglecting my duty to start a new thread on time. Sincere apologies!

It's Week Twenty Five!!!

How’s everyone doing? It seems you’re all being awesome as usual!

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Mrs Trellis x

Hey lovelies

I’ve been building flat pack furniture all week which is exactly like a work out. I’m now the proud owner of biceps and a bag full of spare screws.

How’re you all doing? X

Yes you're right I should have but havent been prepared and needed the miles in the head to try and prepare for the 13 on Wednesday evening. Won't be any record breaking times so will try to enjoy it anyway

You can get an app which has all the sessions on it and it will yell at you when to run and when to walk.

The first sessions are about 20 minutes long and you do 1 minute running, 1 minute walking (after a 5 minute walking warm up). It then builds up from there to running continuously for 30 minutes.

Been a while since I've posted in one of these. Being strugglung for any dorm of consistency since Liverpool marathon and either feel great or really struggle every time I run with no middle ground.

Got my 64th parkrun on Saturday, not a number that most people celebrate but will be the 50th time I've remembered my barcode!!

Morning.

Not feeling it. Tried getting back on the treadmill at the weekend, did 3km then spent the afternoon with an ice pack on my knee.

If I was a horse, I’d be glue. Or dog food. Or Tesco’s lasagna..........

You’re not the only one to struggle post marathon and it can take a long time to get back to fitness. Liverpool wasn’t really that long ago, I know of some people still only just coming back after London.

Have you tried sports massages?

There is a formula for standardise recovery which I’ve seen, it escapes me now though.

Take it easy on yourself and build lots of easy recovery runs in, you’ll get back there

After starting new job last year, I have become desk bound and as a result put a few extra pounds on. This week I am going to join a social running club in my area and hopefully lose some of the gained weight and generally just improve my general health and fitness

Yes I've had a couple of massages, I just feel drained. I think I was ill for Liverpool and it's taken more out of me than normal, I've posted before how much I struggled on the day, I was running on empty from early on and heart rate was sky high. I've got a 10km Friday night and one in a couple of weeks and hopefully by then be back to normal

I've done the 3 peaks before and hated it, i swore I'd never do it again but i should be at my fittest after walking 192 miles so hoping i can do it quicker than 11 1/2 hours lol then that'll be it, I'll do them seperately but never all together lol

Hitchin

Hi everyone,

On Sunday 24th June I will be running the Hitchin Hard Half Marathon. To clarify it is Hard because it is hilly and not because I will be in a state of erection!

On a serious note I will be running the race in aid of Bowel Cancer UK and in memory of my Best Man; who died of the condition 10 years ago almost to the day.

I would be grateful for sponsorship. If you would like to contribute please PM me and I will provide you with my Just Giving page.

Thank you Drew.

I've never been daft enough to brave that one! I did the Hitchin 10km recently and that was unforgiving and that's the easier part of the course!

There's loads of local events this weekend - solstice 10 for me on Friday before a day volunteering at the centurion tri on sunday

Just remember to take it easy. You did two marathons in a row, quite quickly if I remember. I know people that don't feel like running for 1 month after a marathon, so take that into consideration.

You'll get there.

Essex.

Hit the treadmill tonight.

Didn't have a lot of time so I do this thing where you up your speed every minute. I did an 8 minute run , had a couple of minutes break and did it again.

Basically it's the speeds of the shuttle run.

In a week or two I will up it to two minutes and then three minutes per leval...

Thanks. I’m going to try running later in the day. I had been running early in the morning but I think my geriatric body needs a bit more time before the shock of running destroys it. If that fails then I’m going to have to seek medical advice I think.

I can’t run in the morning at all I try and run at lunch if I can get away or straight after work. My knees have also been letting me know their shock at my new found enthusiasm for running but I have found that strengthening the leg muscles to support the knees has helped massively, yoga is excellent too

Absolutely, it might also be worth looking at your shoes too. Knee/ankle problems can often be exacerbated by the wrong shoes, go to a proper running shop and ask them to look at your foot profile and maybe a gait analysis, it will cost a bit but getting the right shoes is essential.

Who said that running was simple?!

My knees have also been letting me know their shock at my new found enthusiasm for running but I have found that strengthening the leg muscles to support the knees has helped massively, yoga is excellent too

I’m now googling leg muscle strengthening exercises!! Thanks"

"Morning.

Not feeling it. Tried getting back on the treadmill at the weekend, did 3km then spent the afternoon with an ice pack on my knee.

If I was a horse, I’d be glue. Or dog food. Or Tesco’s lasagna..........

I’m sorry to read that... if it persists try seeing a sports physio, it’s a bit pricey but it really helped when I was injured earlier this year

Someone suggested that before, but I thought I’d see if rest was the simplest cure. I think I need to be a bit more proactive

Maybe shin splints? I used to get something similar a century ago when I played football and the ground was hard.

Maybe shin splints, maybe just you working the muscles at the front of your calves. Try running on softer ground for a bit, trail running is fantastic at this time of year! Also lots of calf stretches

If it doesn’t settle down then maybe see a physio (your GP will be useless)

I don’t know where to start with this, that’s incredible. I’m almost afraid to ask what a threshold pace is, something to do with being on the threshold of collapse?

Not quite, there are various speeds of running based upon your own ability intended to teach your body to do different things;

Easy run- a comfortable pace at which you can run whilst maintaining a conversation. This will build endurance and stamina.

Steady run- a step up from easy. You should be slightly breathless but not struggling. This will help increase your speed endurance.

Threshold run- a harder pace where you run at a pace you can maintain but you are breathing heavily. This teaches your body to manage lactic acid and to improve cardiovascular fitness for longer runs.

Threshold pace for me is basically running with the feeling of a stich coming for about half the time

Terminology time..

Shin splints: catch all term for pain on the front of the shins. can be many things..often brought on by a significant increase in impact or distance. Initially ice the affected area, massage & elevate. Stretch both calf & anterior tibialis (front of shin)..best way is to sit on your legs, bum on your heels. Reduce distance & or impact & build slowly, shoe choice may factor, but research suggests the body is very good at adapting to surface & shoes to mitigate impact.

Threshold: is taken usually as the fastest pace you can maintain for an hour, for some 10k pace is about right.

Lactic acid: does not create fatigue or exist in the body, it is lactate & actually works as a substrate for energy production whilst working. The fatigue is mostly muscle fibres tiring & accumulation of hydrogen ions in the working muscle inhibiting contraction.

Depends on the cause, like most muscular issues some rehab, some prehab, possibly physio & analysing what may be the cause & correcting for it..there you go problem solved. Quite often stretch, massage, ice (not necessarily in that order) can nip in the bud & solve the issue.

Some strengthening exercises will pay dividends when it has settled, calf raises will sort both sides of the ankle joint to a degree, lifting toes toward shin will specifically strengthen the AT muscle, use resistance bands as strength increases.

I do love a good massage after a run, just running fingers/thumbs down the front of your shin bone will pin point the main areas of discomfort...
