Traffic land

Monreith beach in Dumfries and Galloway. A beautiful quiet beach, can be dark and wild when the weather is inclement, but also beautiful on a great day. Amazing light sand, rock pools and a cave.

I’ve read so many good books recently and been to some wonderful places but I’d probably recommend taking a long walk in the Peak District, going a little off the beaten track and finding the Roaches and Ludds church. Beautiful

Everything by Alan Moore! Apart from his literary work, he's also taken part in some amazing musical works eg. "The Highbury Working" and "Angel Passage". Difficult to get hold of, needs repeated listening to get into, but incredibly worthwhile.

Nobody has gone with a videogame yet. So I’m going to recommend No Man’s Sky. It was widely criticised when it launched, chiefly because the lead designer got carried away when promoting the game, and was accused of overhyping it.

As a technical achievement, it’s incredible. A procedurally generated universe, with star systems, planets, moons, flora and fauna. You can explore a planet, get on your ship, fly out into space and down onto another planet with no breaks for loading. That had never been done before.

And the planets are amazing. The design is inspired by the lurid science fiction of the 70s and 80s, so you have turquoise vegetation against a deep red sky, or deserts of crystals with floating islands, or covered entirely in water, and teaming with outlandish dinosaurs, or skittish birds, or carnivorous fish.

The constantly evolving, bespoke soundtrack by 65daysofstatic tops it off I’ve spent dozens of hours in that universe.

I lived and worked in Amsterdam for four summers, and always had a museum pass for unlimited entry. I mostly loved the Van Gogh museum, but the Rijksmuseum is vast, and incredible. I know this makes me sound like a wank, but I could spend hours looking at Rembrandt’s use of colours in his paint. I still haven’t tired of looking at the shadow of the hand cast on the yellow doublet at the focal point of The Nightwatch. It’s perfect.

The Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

Now I like a museum, but I have to confess after traipsing round them all day, Greek classical sculptures and Renaissance paintings start to look a bit samey.

The Pergamon is different to any other museum I've seen - it's exhibits are big and architectural - the first room is huge, filled with the temple from Pergamon, replete with marble steps leading up to it and with the frieze depicting the tale of the gods vs the giants adorning the walls.

The next room is a long corridor leading down to the legendary Ishtar gate from Babylon (or at least the outer part, which at 80 feet high was the only bit they could squeeze in.)

The museum is filled with these kinds of treasures, it's just amazing

The Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin. I love reading, I don’t have sophisticated tastes (in anything really), but I first read these books when I was 15, and have read them at least once a year since.

It sounds shite and twatty I know, but the characters feel like old friends now. And if I’m having a time in my life when I need comfort, they are the first books I pick up.

I was lucky enough to get a first edition as a gift recently, and I was over the moon.

As far as art goes - The Christ of St John of The Cross, by Dali, hangs in the Kelvingrove in Glasgow.

I could stand at look at it all day. It’s almost in 3D if you stand in the right place.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is pretty great. They tour a selection of films which is usually around the U.K. in March / April. Been the last couple of years and seen some incredible short films, beautiful scenery, awe inspiring stories and incredible characters.

Art gallery: GoMA, in Glasgow. Granted, your experience of a gallery like that is going to change (potentially quite radically) depending on what the installations are when you’re there, but I’ve never been disappointed in the times I’ve gone.

Painting: I mentioned it earlier, but Rembrandt’s Nightwatch. It’s something to behold. It’s huge, there’s a lot going on, and some of the finer details in the focal point are exquisite.

Museum: I trust you’ve been to the Science Museum in London? If not, go. Unleash the fascinated child inside you. I love going there.

Video game: This time I’m recommending Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. I wrote a full blog post about it when it was released but, in short, it’s a cracking piece of storytelling, a game that elicits a range of emotions from you, and a rarely used gameplay dynamic.

Book: Matt Haig, How to Stay Alive. The second book by this chap to get a mention in this thread. I’m cheating here, because I am only part way through it but, so far, it’s essential reading for anyone who has (or knows someone who has) depression. If you insist I only recommend a book I’ve read, I’ll say non-fiction, Jon Ronson’s So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, or fiction, To Kill A Mockingbird.

Poem: The Hunting of the Snark, Lewis Carroll. Why? For the Snark is a boojum, you see.

Recipe: 250g dates, blended into a paste with 2 medium bananas (I used my nutrininja). Melt 100g of dark, high percentage cocoa cooking chocolate, and mix with the fruit paste. Now stir in 250g of rolled oats. Hand roll into balls. Devour.

Person: Me.

Anything: A film called Loving Vincent. It’s about Van Gogh’s final days, and every single one of the 65,000 frames is a hand-painted oil painting in his style. It’s beautiful to look at. The writing and acting are, to be honest, a little functional to start, but improve (or you become more tolerant of them) fairly quickly. But, you won’t have seen many films quite like it.

Two artworks that made me say WOW out loud as soon as I saw them;

Michael Angelo's David in Florence, I know it's well know, but it is fantastic.

Impressions: Sunrise, in the Money museum, opposite the Lilly's that everyone else was looking at, I fell in love with the painting that gave the lmpressionist movement it's name.

Hire a cabin just off the beach in Tulum, Mexico. It's rough and ready, just a bed in a mosquito net in a wooden cabin. But you can go to sleep to the sound of the sea lapping on the beach just yards away and you can wake up in the morning, roll out of bed, and slip into the warm sea for a nice wake up
