Also I believe those parts of his diary were written before he fled Germany, I believe that the treatment of the Jews in Germany and later how black people were treated in America changed his views and made him more open minded

"Yeah, there's nothing quite like racism against yourself to make you realise that racism is bad, mkay"

So you’d prefer it if nobody changed their mind and just carried on being racists? How wonderful that would be, although it would make telling ‘good’ people from ‘bad’ a lot easier.

We are all, or will be victims of history & changing opinions & attitudes. As someone else mentioned not changing, ignoring evidence etc is the greatest problem. There is probably not a person in the world who has not held an opinion that they regret or has become dodgy, recognise, change & move on, apologise if necessary. Dead historical figures are in no position to defend themselves ... Note & move on celebrate their achievements for what they are.

Yes it is. It's like if chinese scholar had visited London in 1940 and remarked "well that place is a bit of a shit hole" and "English people scurry underground like cockroaches". We'd be like "Yeah it was mate, sort of a reason for that!"

One of his entries he said the Chinese were more automatons than people. Now I know in Britain there's huge diversity, there's diversity in Ireland too but if you look at the amount of Chinese people that work here you don't ever really see them outside of work, school or college. Although I'm from an area where there's not too many foreigners. It's a shit area where most people wouldn't live haha

The problem is, that's cultural at a point in time. So it's factually accurate to say that Chinese culture is very collectivist and doesn't encourage individual expression. It's ignorant to make a statement that suggests it's the people themselves and their genetics that are the reason. Besides humans are humans and even north koreans find ways to express themsleves, those ways as just more subtle to an outsider. I don't know what he said before it was translated and how nuanced it was though.

Anyway, to put this in some kind of context, how about just comparing his diaries to pretty much every novel, paper, film etc from the time, not to mention other people's diaries.

I'm not saying it's fine to say things like that about other cultures, but picking out Einstein's diaries from a time when pretty much everybody was thinking and saying the same kind of things ... it seems a little disproportionate.

The bai zuo generally don't like the Chinese. The Chinese are a walking contradiction to the bai zuo philosophy that ethnic minorities need special privileges to succeed in a majority white country.

It's more making observations on the society at large.

Storm in a teacup. Calling something racist that isn't really just diminishes the term and undermines attempts to tackle true racism

When you say it's "a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races" then that's not a societal observation. Besides a societal observation is still racist if it's incorrect and prescribes culture to genetics. For example, it is racist to say "black Americans are criminals". Rather than "criminal risk factors are more likely to effect black Americans".

I don't see that it *is* ascribing culture to genetics though.

It's more ascribing culture to culture. He doesn't try and claim the Chinese were born a certain way, or that it was their genetics that made them a certain way - it's just an observation on the society.

It's not like saying all black people are criminals, I think you've missed the target with that comparison.

Admittedly, the comment about it being a shame if they took over the world smacks a little of racism, but it's (to my mind at least) more of a moan about the lack of imagination and creativity that they would bring rather than an actual dig at the people.

You seem awfully keen to make this into something more than it needs to be - from what I've read (this thread was the first I'd heard of it) the comments are pretty innocuous

It's good to look at the hero and villains of history and then find people who can give a different point of view.

And then work out why certain people are portrayed as heroes and others as villains.

I personally wouldn't, but I think you raise an interesting point.

For some reason, whatever that may be, racism directed towards black people is 'the worst', towards those from the Indian subcontinent not quite so bad, and towards Orientals is kinda okay.

Obviously it's not - but this is how society reacts and behaves.

There is an unspoken hierarchy of racism. It's odd...

I'd say as well though, racism (casual, mainly) towards Orientals, while more socially acceptable, is far less prevalent.

My theory is kinda that we don't stand out as much because our skin is pale, plus there's not that many of us, so we seem less threatening.

Plus people like sweet and sour pork balls.

But it doesn't really make much sense - many of the complaints people often raise; "they're illegal!" or "they don't integrate!" etc are just as applicable to Orientals, or certainly the Chinese, yet they don't seem to attract the same level of vitriol

It was 1922 - 1923 !

We were still maintaining an empire , an ever growing carbuncle which we fed with the kind of behaviour that’s now looked at as being some of the worst in history .

America still segregated blacks and whites .

Women had only just got the right fo vote .

Being gay was against the law , and they were often being murdered for their sexuality .

And what he said was a minor slur in the way the Chinese looked and behaved . And they seem not to be bothered by it .

So nor am I , it doesn’t change a thing for me with respect to how I feel about him .
