World Cup™ Willy’s World Cup™ Wrap #1

Newbie here, first post on the forums so please be gentle

Well it's World Cup Eve Eve and my World Cup Willy is twitching with excitement and even oozing a little bit of pre-cum in anticipation of the upcoming festival of football, and I'll be here for as long as the mighty Three Lions are still in the tournament offering an occasional World Cup related slant on all things Fab.

Before we start we might as well get it out of the way early, right? You just know some egg-chasing types will be itching to say it so here goes:

“Football? Pft! It's just a bunch of overpaid pussies falling over at the slightest touch, it's not a PROPER sport with REAL men like rugby is it?” (yawn!)

Ok, good. That's that out of the way once and for all and so now on with the action!

While I can see a few World Cup related threads on here already, and have no desire to see the end of other World Cup related threads, the intent of this thread is to be the 'go-to' place for all to discuss the World Cup action itself over the course of the tournament for those that are interested! How many threads can we fill!?

The place for England fans to initially mock the Scots, Welsh & Irish for their failure to qualify for the Finals, and later for the Scots, Welsh and Irish to mock the English when the inevitable embarrassing / agonising elimination happens early in the tournament!

Seen a hottie in the crowd? Discuss them here!

Controversial incidents? Predictions? After match analysis? Let's consolidate it in one thread.

Incensed that they've had the nerve to move Corrie by half an hour to show Morocco v Iran? Vent below!

Come and join the party!! Who's with me?

I’ll be watching the Sweden games intently - lots of opportunities for the TV Director to cut away to attractive women in the crowd in tight fitting tops and face paint!

The TV companies must employ people specifically to scout out the hotties in the crowd. Where can I apply for that job!?

Anyway peeps, this time tomorrow the first game will be under our belts!

Bring it on!!

So it’s finally here!

Opening ceremony later this afternoon and Russia v Saudi Arabi at 4pm, the two lowest ranked sides in the tournament.

I’m predicting a 3-0 Home win, can’t see the hosts doing anything but winning this one.

Sadly I’ll still be in work so will miss this ‘live’ so will have to catch up later, where are you watching the game and how do you think it will end?

What kind of impact do you think VAR will have on the games? Any time I've seen it in action I've not been impressed. It takes a lot longer to get a decision than I thought it would. Hopefully they can speed it up a bit

It’s the first real big test isn’t it? Like you I’ve not been impressed so far and hopefully won’t be too disruptive.

I suppose it helps to get things right but a bit of controversy always spices things up! I’m thinking Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ and Lampards “goal” that wasn’t allowed!

Tell you what, this Saudi defence isn’t great is it? I know it’s a World Cup and all that, but it’s a shame that teams like Italy aren’t here but teams like Saudi are. But the qualification rules are the qualification rules!!

I was talking to my brother today about Italy not qualifying. They players should be ashamed of themselves.

Both the centre backs sliding by the Russian before he scored the 2nd kinda sums it up really

Well for a while it looked like a great prediction, damn those very late goals!

So the first game is over, 5-0 to the hosts, not the best game to open a tournament, 2 poor sides.

You can wave goodbye to the Saudis, who were truly woeful!

As the host nation Russia could grow as the tournament progresses but they won’t trouble the best sides on this performance despite the comprehensive win! Still you can’t knock a 5-0 win!

Only one use of VAR I can remember and all done quickly and not disruptive so that’s all good!

Got to wait until tomorrow for the next game now, I’m going cold turkey all ready!

I think you’re right to a degree, certainly it gives certain players a head start, but usually it’s a player from a team that goes deep into the tournament that wins it, and all groups should have, in theory, one whipping boy in it. So on that basis things should kind of even themselves out.

But, yeah, Saudi were so woeful it was almost a different level, so in that respect I tend to agree with you!

Agreed, lots of fillers, it’ll be like the Rugby World Cup where the group games turn into farce with cricket scores and the small countries are there just to make up numbers. All about money and profit isn’t it!

Spot on . How such a woefully bad team got through is beyond belief ! I don’t recall the Russian keeper making a save . I truly think it was one of the worst performances I can remember ( at least since Brazil vs Germany ) .

So how bad will it be with a dozen more teams that are even worse than than the Saudis ?

Well , actually it makes me think that Italy not getting through , and Ireland and Wales , it’s about time it was a tournament for the best teams rather than the teams that qualify because the teams in their group are worse than they are .

So we’re on rob match day 2!

3 games today to keep us busy but I’m at work for the first 2!

Egypt v Uruguay : I’m going for a 1-1 draw, will Mo Salah be fit for the Egyptians?

Then Morocco v Iran, going for a 3-1 Morocco win

Tonight is the biggie - Spain with their very recently appointed interim manager vs CR7’s Portugal. Should be a cracker! I’m going with a 3-2 Spain victory!

I’m not able to watch other than via twitter updates, but I heard there was lots of empty seats!

Despite the 5-0 scoreline yesterday’s game was low on quality overall so not the best start to the tournament quality wise by sounds of it!

Exactly right .

Imagine how bad it will be in Qatar !

It’s all about the prestige of the country hosting and nothing to do with ensuring the stadiums and supporters are looked after .

Mind you it would help if the teams could at least pretend they care , which these two aren’t doing so far .

It'll be even worse. The Qatari people have zero interest in football. They didn't even have a professionals football team until they decided to bid.

I feel sorry for the Russian people who have probably wanted to go to the games but can't afford those kind of prices. They've tried to embrace the event with hospitality that appears to be shown.

FIFA is a toxic organisation with no interests other than serving itself and it's pockets.

In other news, apparently the Russian Government has banned the tradition among Nigerian fans of bringing live chickens into the stadium, according to the Interfax news agency.

The ministry will apparently advise fans on areas they will be allowed to carry chickens when supporting the team!

The crowd have been singing what a load of rubbish in the second half , and have booing non stop for ten minutes now with 15 minutes to go .

Suarez just misses another sitter and shows he has no bite left in his game .

Apparently 5,200 empty seats at Egypt v Uruguay, but only 780 were unsold. FIFA says it’s investigating why.

Could be like at London 2012 where despite being sold out for months on Day 1 there were many empty seats in venues - this turned out to be unused sponsors tickets and to be fair they fixed that PDQ so hopefully FIFA will too

I wouldn’t mind betting there were 5200 empty seats at the start of the game , but considerably more halfway through the second half ( unless they were locked in ! ) .

Mind you this game Morocco v Iran is just as bad

Iran score deep into injury time to win 1-0, both of the games today settled by a late, late goal!

Finally at home so I can settle down properly for Spain v Portugal later and crack open a cold cider at the end of the working week too!

I’m quite sure you’ve had a whole lot of fun anyway but the game has been great so far at HT (2-1 to Portugal) - finally the WC come alight! Decent goal from Costa and a shocking mistake from De Gea!

Enjoying this one, hopefully the 2nd half will be as good!

I think everyone is more realistic this time - for me I see the beginnings of a Work In Progress build for the Euros / next World Cup, if we can keep this group together and evolve over the next few years it could go far into future tournaments!

"3-1 France"

Almost, 2-1 in the end! I had to listen on the radio to that one, but it sounds like the VAR call for the penalty was correct based on what the commentators were saying (I’ve not seen it yet).

Hopefully Iceland can do over the Argies later - looking forwards to the Thunder Clap!

Both great, great players but Ronaldo has always edged it for me as the more complete player.

More 2 footed

Better in the air

More powerful

Faster

At interanational level he's always played for an (on paper) inferior team yet he's managed to win the Euros and Messi's basically won jack shit for Argentina.

Don't get me wrong Messi is a genius but Ronaldo is better.

It’s apparently because Pierluigu Collina (who’s now a FIFA advisor) believes if they’re in kit they’ll be in the right ‘mindset’ to officiate, a bit like wearing a suit to work! It kind of makes sense if you think about it like that!

Well I was out last night so missed Croatia v Nigeria, but onto match day 4 and just the 3 games today, with Germany and Brazil starting their campaigns.

Costa Rica v Serbia are up first - I’ll go for a draw but again I’m out so will miss this one

Germany v Mexico - can’t look beyond the holders for this one. I might miss the first half so hopefully all the goals will come after the break!

Then tonight Brazil v Switzerland - I think the Swiss might surprise a few and draw this one, I’ll go for 1-1

No shocks today for me. Fairly comfortable Brazil and Germany wins (2 gowl margins) and a draw in the other game. Hopefully a few goals flying in as well.

Throw in the final round of the US Open and it's a telly box day for me! Hoping Justin Rose can pull it off.
