Feminist Drivers?

Cambridge

I'm a feminist, as im sure are a lot of other fabsters (or what ever the collective name is for us). I do my share of the cooking, cleaning, childcare etc. but is always assumed that I will do the driving. Also, when I'm out and about on the road, I see few female drivers with male passengers, so I assume most couples are like us.

Are there any women who see this as a feminist issue and make sure that they drive 50% of the time when they are with their partner?

Nope, I prefer the guy to drive me as long as he is a good driver.

Very much depends on the reasoning I imagine.

For us Chris does all the driving because he enjoys it, not for any mysoginistic reason.

Means I can sit back and enjoy the journey, as well as drink when we go out

We are both car mad but I do a hell of a lot of solo driving so when we go out he always drives. He enjoys the action of driving.

We've done long driving holidays and he's done it all.

I drive home from the pub though

Hubby is a dreadful passenger. When I was learning to drive he only sat beside me in my car with L plates in a couple of times, I spent more time driving with his mum who lives 3 hours away!

Since I passed my test a year ago I haven’t driven with him as a passenger at all, I’m happy enough just enjoying the scenery while he does the work

Interesting how most prefer the guy to drive - is that hidden sexism, a result of societal influence, presented as a taste?

Judging by the number of women on this website you say that they can’t travel, I suspect it’s hardly a feminist issue!

Doesn’t seem to affect the number of statuses asking for lifts to clubs either..

Not learning to drive is lazy and pathetic. It’s an essential life skill even if “I didn’t need a car because I live London’ or any other of the cliched excuses people come out with.

It shows to me that you are quite literally prepared to be a passenger and take advantage of someone else who has bothered to learn to drive and run a car.

For me it’s got to be 50:50. That’s because I fall asleep like a baby as soon as anyone else is driving.

I live in Devon, where there are lots of narrow winding lanes. Guaranteed if you meet a woman she will expect you to reverse, even if she’s only Got 10 feet and you’ve got to reverse half a mile. Usually it’s quicker for me to reverse the half mile anyway. So I prefer to see the male half of the couple driving.

No point learning to drive if they can't afford a car or public transport is cheaper where they live.

Yes there is.

Not learning shows total lack of effort and ambition.

And a complete acceptance of the fact that they will be largely reliant on anyone that can. Hardly a feminist (or equalist) principle.

Even if you’ve got good public transport where you live, at some point you’ll need to use a car. Or go on holiday, or visit people, or shift a sofa, or help someone else out.

Not affording one is another joke excuse. Hardly expensive for the amount of freedom that you get. 25 million car owners probably aren’t wrong. A feminist will or be able to claim a reduced capacity to earn money or lower wages either.

I try to reduce the amount I drive whenever I can. My profile is a clue to that. I think most trips are unecessary and could be done by walking, cycling or public transport. But the absolute refusal to learn to drive is ridiculously selfish, by either sex, but particularly in the context of a discussion of it as a feminist principle.

Essex.

We both like driving, so it comes down to where we are going and who's car we are going in.

Frisky has a new car and is very protective of it, so if she's not happy about the parking we will go in my Land Rover.

We have had a few driving holidays in France and The Netherlands, Frisky has done 95% of the driving for those as we have taken her car.

She will drive the Land Rover and has done some fairly demanding off road driving but ultimately she prefers leather and aircon to wet feet and rattles...

"Interesting how most prefer the guy to drive - is that hidden sexism, a result of societal influence, presented as a taste?

It's just one of the ways you can let men be men and most prefer that.

An interesting point. What do people think when they see a man in the passenger seat and a woman driving? Is it emasculating?

It’s funny , as having always owned jap cars many men have presumed it’s my partners car! Frustrates the hell outta me!!

Are only men allowed to own them? Are they particularly sporty cars, or just any Japanese car?

Classed as particular sporty.

Subaru’s , Evo’s , Skylines etc

Did the man who sold them to you know that you were buying them to drive yourself, or did you tell him you were buying them for your father/brother/boyfriend/husband/uncle etc? "

Have no idea

"I'm a feminist, as im sure are a lot of other fabsters (or what ever the collective name is for us).

Not at all, the last time Alexis drove was in 2003, she absolutely hates driving and on the odd occasions prior to 2003 when she was required to drive she was almost a nervous wreck. Why make her do something she doesn't want to do. Pretty sure that we are like most couples and share the jobs, I hate gardening for example so all outside spaces are hers, it all about give and take not a feminist issue.

This really sounds like trying to make a complete non-issue an issue

Why? "

I'd assume that to be fairly self explanatory, it's not a real issue and you're making out that it is....

It's a discussion, one you appear to be uncomfortable having.

Lol really, uncomfortable.... Not in the slightest. I just don't see the point in trying to make an issue about who drives a bloody car when women have much bigger issues to deal with. The reason a lot of people don't take feminists seriously is exactly because of things like this, smothering real issues in a sea of inane, nonsensical non-issues that turn people away from actually listening to those that raise awareness of real problems.

"I live in Devon, where there are lots of narrow winding lanes. Guaranteed if you meet a woman she will expect you to reverse, even if she’s only Got 10 feet and you’ve got to reverse half a mile. Usually it’s quicker for me to reverse the half mile anyway. So I prefer to see the male half of the couple driving.

So you should, whatever happened to ladies first chivalry is dead!

To right lady, it’s a rat race through them Devon lanes.

If you ever want to spend a whole day stranded down a Devon lane then we can go for a drive and I can attempt to reverse half a mile to let someone pass

You’d be straight up the hedge and I’d be digging the car out. No thank you!

Spoilsport. It would have been a lovely day out as well.

I’m not saying women can’t reverse for shit, just the vast majority of them.

I can reverse up a narrow country lane with great speed an accuracy thank you, and several times have had to when some cretinous man has no idea how wide his vehicle is (like last weekend on a 30% hill!!)

You must have found the one bloke who can’t reverse."

I know a few lol!

No, I don't think anything, it could be either for a million reasons.

Ok, well thanks for your input and your perspective on the issue.

No.

It can only be a feminist issue for the people that feel they are not being allowed to drive due to their gender.

I allow anyone to drive. That way I get free time

I was driving down a country lane today (single lane with passing points) and I reversed to let someone by.

I used to when I lived in Devon too.

Essex.

It's amazing how many guys you see drive to the station, then as he goes off to the train, the woman gets out of the passanger seat and then drives the car home.

You see it in reverse in the evening, the little lady pulls up and dutifully gets into the passenger seat and awaits her lord and master...
