"Is it something like 90% of all creatures that evre existed extinct?"

Ermmm...dunno Diamonds...

There was an extinction event way back in earths history, that an estimated 90% of all known life became extinct..mabye that...

But it could be a fact of something else I guess...along the lines of All known life..

"[Removed by poster at 11/11/11 15:06:19]"

I can`t post other than quoting peeps Saucy !?

Prolly the most shocking extinction fer me was the Passenger Pigeon..

It was second only to locusts as the worlds biggest animal that flocked..

Estimates on numbers average 5 BILLION birds...flocks would take a day to pass over...

It was wiped out in a mad 100 years by European settlers in America...

The last one died in a zoo..

What about the Spearmint Rhino?

"What about the Spearmint Rhino?

Lol

There have been around 5 great extinction events when something rapidly changed and many species and groups of animals were unable to adapt quickly enough and so have disappeared. most extinctions, though happen naturally as species change to fit the patterns of change in the environment.

99.9% of life forms that have ever existed have gone into the black night, but that's over 400 or so million years.

We (humans) have been the cause of the extinctions of almost all large mammals across the world. The last 100 years have seen a massive decline in the variation of the natural environment and we have already lost huge numbers of animals.

Sorry to harp on but am a little d*unk and think it's such a shame that we will never see these animals again just because we want the newest mobile phone or just one more beef burger......

Well, this is the problem.

I am am a 'greenie', not cos I like culdy things (rhinos are mean tempered nasty buggers) but because the 'mega fauna' represent 65 milion years of evolutionary story.

How many beefburgers is an elephant worth? I say this as huge area of savanah in the elephants normal environment is being planted with soya to feed cows in feedlots for satisfy the demand for the (largely unhealthy) appetites of the developed and rapidly developing world. Bad for cows, bad for us and bad for the animals which are beig robbed of places to live.

The only people who really benefit from the destruction of the natural environment are those who are already rich. This however leads to another thread which more suits my political blog than this one.....
