If i do something i wouldn't normally do because it makes a woman happy and it's important to me to make her happy am i doing it for her or for myself?

An interesting point. A friend of mine once said there's no such thing as pure altruism - that everyone had a hidden agenda. I scoffed at her nihilism at the time but in some respects i think she might be right.

For example, i took a woman to the ballet - as an art form i quite like it but it's not something i'd normally do for myself. She on the other hand loves it and it made her very happy. I have been justly rewarded since both in her happiness and in other ways.

By doing something to make another smile you will smile too, lots.

The world just needs to be a kinder place.

So it seems my friend may have been right. If altruism comes with expectation of reward, even if that reward is merely my own happiness, it can't be considered purely altruistic.

At the end of the day, though, if everyone's happy why should it matter?

Alturism is a personality trait & its rare. The expectation of a reward experience will not last for long as in my experience 'No good deed goes unpunished' & I usually end up doing things for others to the detriment of myself.

If I do something for others, I do it because they need help not because I want or need something in return.

In my opinion it doesn't matter. It's the act itself that's important as long as its genuine. I'm not keen on the I've bought you dinner now you owe me sex scenario.

That's not a scenario i find acceptable either, it's not a fair trade and it doesn't make both parties happy either.

Some people are wont to take advantage of a person's kind nature, then it's up to the individual to put a stop to it. There are limits.
