Who would of though that another super giant will close some of its stores, affecting 6000 jobs, as part of a rescue deal, what went wrong, is brexit one of the reasons, whats your view?

My view, sold over priced goods, couldn't compete with cheaper online stores, closed down.

I hate shopping with an absolute passion, so the sooner Amazon shuts down all stores, the happier I'll be

I'm sure this was on the cards a while ago along with the M&S cuts.

The nearest one to us is Glasgow.

It takes up a huge chunk of real estate.

It will be shit for the employees however like has been said I can order on line in the morning and get next day free delivery on certain items for a good percentage less than I would if I was to visit the shop.

I have to admit that I’m not a fan of department stores. If I want to buy a pair of shoes, I’ll go to a shoe shop. I don’t need to be bombarded with cosmetics, multiple ranges of men’s and women’s clothes, handbags, homeware, etc. as well.

But I do feel for the 100s of people that might be losing their jobs. And I wonder what will take the place of such huge stores on the high street?

The stores are getting more people to shop online, therefore they are not getting the foot fall through the doors anymore. On top of that you have the increase in ground rent, amenities that is hurting them, you could also add people are getting smart with their money as they are shopping at cheaper places.

It used to be the more you spent on thibgs the better it was, now it.is all about how much you cheaper it was than other places.

Sore point for me that, there is a hotel that closed down years ago, it would be brilliant as a homeless shelter but it is being left to rot.

That's a real shame because they sell a good range and many of the stores are in city centre flagship locations. God only knows what they're going to be replaced by.

It's simple economics for me. I have less money to spend and it needs to stretch ever further. So no matter how sad it is that shops shut and people lose jobs, I'll search high and low online for the bargains.

Debenhams and any other department store will be next.

Stores to large and not enough footfall. Basic ecconomics.

Personally i like the whole shopping experience. Trying the clothes on for one. Hate getting clothes of the internet as the sizes are always a bit iffy. Being a short arse its good to try them on first !

As awful as it sounds, like everything things evolve (not always for the better I might add) over the years and this is just a sign of the times, with online shopping now you (I like to still go to the shops) don’t have to have the big department stores now that are generally really expensive anyway.

Look at milkmen, all the rage for years, now the supermarkets sell it its a dying trade, my poor dad was shifted all over the place for years before he retired.

Not good for those loosing their jobs of course but certainly not suprised. Now if they could close down w h smith as that is grossly over priced and never anyone in there that would be great, least not because we will get our bigger post office back!

The store will have partially been affected by the 2008 global financial crisis, coupled with austerity Britain, where wages have helped it gain 103rd place for wage growth since 2008

The institute headed by Iain Duncan Smith, Conservative, also predicts that the low paid face 10 more years of wage squeezes in the UK.

With a retailer selling items that will often be over and beyond essential items to stay housed and fed, they will obviously be under pressure to sustain themselves. The pending Brexit decisions have also been affecting the UK economy very negatively, so this will have impacted the retailer too.

It's very disappointing but perhaps not totally too surprising.

In other news a brand new John lewis store opens in Cheltenham in autumn, plus their Waitrose is being extended. In Gloucester a new Next Home is being built. It's not all doom and gloom..

I always thought they were pretty reasonable with prices, and sure they had expensive stuff but also had levis and the likes for around the same price you can get them online, but you can try them on.

I'm the type of shoper that if I cant try the jeans on I wont buy them, so if all shops go away and its left to amazon I will probably order the same pair of jeans over and over and not buy a different make/brand ever again.

I like going there for birthday presents too, I got my sister a little wedgewood mirror thing in there that I 100% would have never seen online, and it was reduced.

There are some big players expanding, but every single one of them avoids high rent areas like the plague and they are raking in cash. The sort of shops like Ikea that setup on the edge of town and expect you to drive out to them.

Rent and insurance is absolutley shocking in some places.

Speaking of WHSmith, why are their shops so badly lit? Are they saving on electricity, or are they trying to drive out the three customers in the shop? It always seems like closing time in there. I don't go in there unless I have to. It's just so depressing!

It’s sad for the people who will lose their jobs. When businesses make cuts its rarely the guys at the top getting cut. Online is quick, convenient and easier than ever. If you live out in the country like we do, going shopping can be a hassle. I could go into a town with clothes shops (a 40 min drive each way for an ok selection or an hour each way for a better selection. Anything else and it’s city centre for us, about an hour and a half plus whatever traffic you gotta face), once there I gotta hope I see something I like and in my size. OR I could go online, sort what I want by colour, size, fit and price and buy something that will be here tomorrow (with free returns if it doesn’t fit) and be done in time for the school run. No fuss and no crying in the changing room cos they only have the size above or the size below me.

You would think with all the online services available they would be able to redistribute a lot of staff to a busier section of the business.

Very true and it's destroying town and city centres. Landlords that live elsewhere and don't maintain their buildings. Local councils are often blamed for lack of urban centre development but it's often over-priced private sector rents that stifle growth.

The Oxford Street store has Rates of £4.5M a year!!! Plus it was due to increase later in the year!

WHS was mentioned by others; everything is overpriced with them. If newspapers & mags weren't already priced I bet WHS would increase their prices!

Unstable economy may be partly to blame, buying non essential items requires people to have spare cash, and confidence that they will still have spare cash 6 months / years down the line.

But the bottom line is the stores running costs are higher than their income, and the biggest tend to fall the loudest.

The thing with WHS is that shopping online with them can save you so much money (for items I've bought), so they're encouraging you not to use their stores. I know they have rates & staff costs but not noticed it so much with other stores though

You're right but they seem to be spending money on the wrong things.

If I hear a radio advert for House of Fraser, I don't automatically think of going to visit their store... But that's just probably me.
