" But I do feel for the 100s of people that might be losing their jobs. And I wonder what will take the place of such huge stores on the high street?" Agreed. Turn those vast spaces into homeless shelters

Turn those vast spaces into homeless shelters " Sore point for me that, there is a hotel that closed down years ago, it would be brilliant as a homeless shelter but it is being left to rot.

"Still st least some people on here seem quite overjoyed that a few thousand are going to lose their jobs. Nobody has said that" That's what I thought. I had to double check as I thought I was going blind. The assumption is strong in this one.

"High end garments sold mostly on concessions stalls so anybody hoping for a mass sale of decent clobber is going to be disappointed I think. " The House of Fraser store in Northampton closed a few years ago. I got some amazing bargains. Jeans and a purse which should of been £350 each were £30 each

"My view, sold over priced goods, couldn't compete with cheaper online stores, closed down. I hate shopping with an absolute passion, so the sooner Amazon shuts down all stores, the happier I'll be All hail Amazon" Which would be fine if Amazon operated on a level playing field. You know. Paid tax and everything.

"Just read that the MK store is closing, that is a massive shop! " That's a big reason for so many of their stores having to close. They're just too expensive to rent. Surprised that the Oxford Street one is going though considering its location.

"I actually think WHSmith might be next. Most of their books are double what they are on line." Speaking of WHSmith, why are their shops so badly lit? Are they saving on electricity, or are they trying to drive out the three customers in the shop? It always seems like closing time in there. I don't go in there unless I have to. It's just so depressing!

"Also, i think its down to rent/bad investments than brexit. There are some big players expanding, but every single one of them avoids high rent areas like the plague and they are raking in cash. The sort of shops like Ikea that setup on the edge of town and expect you to drive out to them. Rent and insurance is absolutley shocking in some places." Very true and it's destroying town and city centres. Landlords that live elsewhere and don't maintain their buildings. Local councils are often blamed for lack of urban centre development but it's often over-priced private sector rents that stifle growth.

Surprised that the Oxford Street one is going though considering its location." The Oxford Street store has Rates of £4.5M a year!!! Plus it was due to increase later in the year! WHS was mentioned by others; everything is overpriced with them. If newspapers & mags weren't already priced I bet WHS would increase their prices! A recent survey found shoppers rated WHS as the worst retail company.

A recent survey found shoppers rated WHS as the worst retail company. " The thing with WHS is that shopping online with them can save you so much money (for items I've bought), so they're encouraging you not to use their stores. I know they have rates & staff costs but not noticed it so much with other stores though

"Unbelievable!! One day announcing store closures and job losses, the next they're on the radio bragging about their new collections. You expected them to cease promoting trade for their remaining business?" You're right but they seem to be spending money on the wrong things. If I hear a radio advert for House of Fraser, I don't automatically think of going to visit their store... But that's just probably me.
