Competitive Sports days

Big debate this morning (in the office) as a School has returned back to competitive Sports day. Apparently they used to hold an activity day where you could essentially just walk around and play different sports.

The main issue was that people will now be left out??? But I can’t help think so were the ones who are good at sport was it fair to hold them back in sport?

Not having kids I never really thought this was an issue but two ladies are now not talking to each other in the office it’s very tense.

The 'leveling of the playing field' in schools has only been detrimental to all involved. All kids are good at some things and bad at others and should be exposed to winning and losing scenarios from as early an age as possible because that's what will be happening to them for the rest of their lives. Academic kids? Brilliant, throw a book their way and let them learn. Sporty kids? Cool, let them run around the field and throw things. Kids that aren't either of the above? Equally as cool and brilliant and probably in the majority too. Vocational training and education from as early an age as can be given will then show them their own skill sets and assets and they can work towards different goals that they are good at.

My two kids have their Sports Day today.

The youngest (currently 6) had the wander around a field and try different fun sporty games last year. How many goals can you score etc.

This year they both have the full on version and they are split into house colours. It usually gets quite competitive. My eldest was gutted his house colour didn’t want the overall thing last year. And he is not usually competitive at all!

You do get the serious sporty families getting competitive on the sidelines too, the ones whise kids are in athletic clubs etc.

Usually everyone else is amazed at how graceful a genuine proper running technique is as opposed to the legging it down the field texhnique.

I’m gutted I don’t have children sometimes. When I was in my prime before my legs went whammo I would have been a force to be reckoned with in the Parents race.

I was awful at everything at school, except cycling. I knew I was bad but still gave it a go, for me it was proving to myself how good or bad I was.

There were kids worse than me as well, but sports day was like any competition for the better athletes.

The only difference was one year you could only enter one event, so everyone had a chance at competing. It turned out a good day, as all the kids who were bad at running and such like all seemed to go in the same event like the long jump, javelin, etc.

It's not a modern thing. If you witness or get involved in any coaching or competitive events with youths you'll see phenomenal talent these days.

There's always been disparity in ability and willpower.

People should stop bashing younger generations and inspire them. No, not everyone will run well or swim well etc, but guide them into something that doesn't make them feel inadequate?

Competition is important yes, but dont place so much emphasis on specific talents as being all that matters.

Modern day sports stars are lauded for their mediocre acheivments. I'd rather celebrate a winner than a 1st, 2nd, or 32nd runner up.

Bringing back competitive sports will maybe give us or our kids, new sporting heroes/heroines to cheer on and aspire to be.

Competitive sports are essential. This non competitive sport and nobody is a loser thing, is complete bollocks. It creates an unrealistic picture of the real world.

We don’t have them thankfully, otherwise i’d have to join a gym and invest in a sports bra!!
