Build it and they will come

The results of a recent survey of young children as to what they would rather do without; playgrounds or computer games, seems to show overwhelmingly that they would rather be outdoors than in front of their gamestation.

It seems to me then that the best way to combat childhood obesity and a whole host of problems associated with gaming is to build more, better and safer playgrounds so that every child has easy access to them. Yet we continue to build new estates without such facilities. I fail to see the sense in this.

When I was a kid our playparks were the woods. A bit of imagination and initiative and they can be just about anything you like

Very lucky here, beach, parks and play areas both indoors and out.

Dumfries

Why can’t children do both ? My three children played outdoors as we used to go camping and also have horses. My son is now heavily involved in computer games having just qualified from uni with a degree in that field.

There is no money in a playground for the developer. In fact quite the opposite.

That would be the reason. Unless the government were to legislate that there should be a playground per x number of houses built.

But this government won't do that.

First off , how old were the kids who said they preferred playing outside ?

Having had five kids who all preferred playing Xbox / PlayStation / Nintendo to playing outside , as did all their friends , I don’t want to pour scorn on the study that claimed it , but I can’t help being a bit sceptical .

Not only did they all prefer the gaming , but none of them are overweight , all are healthy , and the adults are very successful in their chosen careers .

I would guess the reasons that more safe playgrounds aren’t being made is health and safety . A child has an accident on the swings m the slide , the climbing frame and it’s on the phone to personal injury solicitor . That’s the world we live in now and it sucks .

I agree, developers seem fixated on cramming as many houses on to a plot as possible. I think their should be legislation introduced to force them to provide these facilities in direct proportion to the number of houses.

My daughter and her family have moved on to a new estate which is surrounded by busy roads and miles away from any outdoor space apart from the road outside their house.

We should be making it easier for parents not harder.

It's all well and good building, but you'd more than likely need to police them too, litter (including syringes etc), teenagers thinking they're untouchable, they are all risks. Fuck, I worked in an indoor play area for years and there was more trouble and fights in there than there was in the pub next door!

We are lucky in Harlow, you don’t have to go far out of your door to find a play area, also in the summer holiday each ‘area’ of Harlow have a paddling pool in the parks that the council run.

Geeky x

Sounds perfect for a primary school kid. Lots of good role models!
