Should old people be allowed on the motorway?

I was stuck merging onto a dual carriageway at 30mph because I was behind an old git doing 35.

Needless to say my arse was nipping in panic at the potential pile up that could have happened. So since it's probably been done as a thread about learner drivers and motorways. Do you think old people should be allowed to drive on them?

I think their should be at least a Annual theory Re-sit for all drivers. Then a Annual practical for older people(not tarring all old people here, but I go past quite a lot of older folk sat at 50 in the middle lane on the motorway

You may do. Maybe you only notice the older ones? Again it’s nothing to do with age. You see people drive down the slip road, join the motorway and go straight into the middle lane. That’s because they feel safe and comfortable there. Idiots drive in the middle lane whatever age they are.

Theory re-test is good idea though

Should be tested every five years. There are far too many cars and idiots on the road in general.

Begs the question how many of them have actually got driving licences

Id agree with frequent testing beyond a certain age... say over 50 every 5 years and over 70 yearly.

My own mother scares the life out of me behind the wheel. Ive begged her to give up her licence. She never has been a very competent driver but she is almost 70 now and is a danger on the road. I have decided to give her til her 70th birthday then i may have to step in and do something about it.

No very dangerous old lady died very close to my house as she got out her car but forgot but handbrake on then tried stop car got run over and died very sad this happened few years ago people still leave flowers were she died

I think that people of any age who drive with earphones in, look at their passenger when talking to them, have their sat nav directly in front of them on the screen, text, talk on the phone even hands free shouldn't be allowed on the roads let alone the motorway. Also television presenters who talk to the camera beside them when driving.

The thing is you can't generalise with something like this. Some people in their 70's are more competent at every aspect of life than some people in there 30's.

Where do you draw the line? Anyone with an IQ lower than 140 should be banned from voting?

Anyone with no money in the bank should be banned from Xmas?

Where does it all end... oh the whoa, the shame, the misery...

I agree in principle but not with the age parameters . I think testing at 50 could limit someone’s working life . I’d wait till they retire

I don't mind them being on the motorways, they have to get to places like the rest of us.

It's when they cause weekend congestion in the supermarkets when they've had all week to do their shopping they piss me off.

(on the rare occasions I go shopping)

Your posting make me wonder if you are safe to be allowed on a motorway, why did you not drop back when you saw he was going slowly. That way you could have approached at a speed relivant to the traffic on the dual carriageway.

Even if you had kept to the spped of the "old git" you could have merged at 5 mph faster than you did.

Read the traffic plan ahead.

Over 50? ffs, at age 50 I took and passed first time the national police advanced driving course which includes pursuit driving. I see crap driving from people of all ages, old people who aren't capable any longer and young people who are too stupid to be allowed to drive, but drive they do.

I'm a truck driver and do thousands of miles a year on motorways ,its not only old people , a lot of drivers drive slow joining motorways and when on ,next time you're stuck behind truck overtaking a car on a motorway or dual carriage way ,ask yourself ,why is it a truck that's limited to 56 mph is overtaking a car ,it should never happen
