Well, Asian encompasses Indian. Although you could just as well be Vietnamese for all we know. So call yourself British Indian if that's how you identify.

I personally I go with just saying I'm black. My nationality is irrelevant as I don't think there's a lot of people that are attracted to someone due to their nationality.

I think people will use Asian if they are unsure which Asian country somebody was from (forgetting that they were born and bred in Britain).

I suspect you might be a little offended if somebody reffered to you as a Pakistani, British one or not?

Same would apply to using the term Eastern European.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Thanks for posting, OP.

This is one I’m interested in as I never know what people prefer to be called. With so many “labels” & so many kicking off about being PC, I genuinely get confused as to what is & isn’t acceptable.

As a gay man I’m even confused as to the amount of LGBT labels there are now - how the heck are we supposed to keep up when they keep changing?

I suppose it’s down to each individual what their preferred “label” is, but sometimes I feel awkward asking, then the opportunity slips away & it’s too late.

I don’t refer to myself as a British Scot, or refer to my British Indian friends as anything other than Scottish. So it’s really confusing.

Good topic & one I’ll follow with interest.

Its all about putting the right ethnicity across.. Asia is huge which includes Chinese too but they look completely different than Indians!! same way..Indian would hate to call them Pakistanis (perhaps they love each other) and I am sure vice-versa!!

So again, I think personally Indian is better than using Asian!!

Unless you put that you are Indian in your profile, even with a photograph, unless you are Chinese, people are unlikely to know you are from India. So in that case, until you confirm you are Indian, you will be Asian, which is still correct.

Ok....hang on......erm.....yes! Got it!

I DON’T CARE WHAT SKIN COLOUR A PERSON HAS OR WHERE THEY ARE FROM.

I wasn’t suggesting a photo to ‘justify’ an answer merely to imply that if you had a photo on show, people who care about such things could see what colour your skin is, if you think that would be helpful to them and you.

At risk of saying something incidental again....

I have noticed many if not most Asian men have used black and white or poorly lit pictures so that the colour of their skin is not clear.

Is this to get around those hateful shouty "no Asians" profiles do you think?

OP... Do you hope that by saying you are Indian you somehow will get around that "no Asians" line that crops up too often?

Many people can’t differentiate between an Indian and Pakistani. (To be fair they were pretty much the same country even as not so long ago the late 1940s)

I think the use of ‘asian’ is a safe way of trying not to offend those that are aggrieved at being called the wrong one

To be honest I only ever need a label if I'm having to describe someone.

The times I am required to describe someone without having an image as an aid are becoming fewer and fewer.

Maybe if I needed to describe a suspect to the police or a sexy person I had seen to my partner in bed.

I've never had to approach someone and describe their features back to them.

Okay!! So good to read about this topic!! In conclusion

As a British!! from an Indian background.. I don't want to be called as an Asian!! This website should include more specific ethnic background option so that I can tick that!!

There are many reasons behind my opinion.. as many WHITE people tries to stay quite to be NOT called racist, ME TOO don't want to tell any reasons!!

Now I leave to your wisdom and surely, your fine sense of judgement!!

AGAIN THESE ARE MY PERSONAL OPINIONS. AND NOT TO HURT ANYONE'S FEELING STAY HAPPY AND HORNY

Asia encompasses 48 countries. I don’t understand why it was ever invented, it’s a rubbish word. Europe is diverse enough and that’s tiny in comparison.

Blame the ancient Greeks.

Its to do with history and culture. Geographical actually Europe and Asia are one land mass on pretty much one tectonic plate.

Google explanation......

The ancient Greeks first developed the idea of a continent. They saw that the Mediterranean divided Europe from Africa, the Red Sea divided African from Asia, and with their limited knowledge of geography, assumed the Black Sea divided Asia from Europe.

They were wrong, but the notion stuck, and has been reinforced by a culture divide that runs roughly along the same lines

I tend to use South Asian to describe my ethnicity as it encompasses the subcontinent or Indo-Pak because of the borders created in 47. I am British born but that’s my nationality not my ethnicity.

In my PERSONNEL opinion I would like to call myself as an British Indian rather than Asian!! as it clarifies more!!

THIS IS JUST A QUESTION I REQUEST NOT TO TAKE THIS TREAD TOWARDS ANY RACISM BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE LOVES THIS CARD!!"

I think most Indians would be offended by the term Asian as they are Indian and most of them class themselves as English too with Indian background and are proud to be Indian and proud of where they are living.

We do feel there is no need for this on your profile

I am from Asian/Indian ethnicity, if you have problem then please gently pass by. How can someone be so uneducated that they apply their experience to all?

I think people will definitely pass you by..not because of your race, but because of your aggression..just tell folks you are Indian British born and leave them to make their own minds up if they want to meet with you

So which is your preference OP? I’m confused by your conflicting statements on here stating you don’t wish to be referred to as Asian, yet your profile states, “I am from Asian/Indian ethnicity.”

Having followed this thread with a genuine interest to inform myself, avoid unintentional upset, & educate myself as to the preferred terminology, I’m left in confusion over the conflicting statements.

Perhaps now you see why Fab keep it simple & couldn’t possibly offer a multitude of preferred ethnicities or mixed ethnicities as an option.

Meanwhile I’ll garner my own conclusions on the matter.

I've always found it slightly bemusing that 'Asian' (in this country at least) is generally used as a catch-all term for people from the Indian sub-continent, but rarely for people from China, despite the fact that China is a huge part of Asia.

I believe the trend of referring to this myriad cluster of nations as generic Asian harks back to Idi Amin's expulsions from Uganda, when it was referred to as "the Asian problem" but I'm not certain

Hi, I did put that for a reason as 99.9999999% ladies put as "no asians" and I take as "no Indians" too!! but you have a valid point and I corrected it on my profile. so Thank you..

The profile ethnicity categories on fabs do differentiate between South Asian and Asian - in a British political sense, it’s South Asian Or British Asian.

Right. Pretend you’ve just been run over.

A woman is on the phone to the ambulance... she has to describe you... which is more aggravating.

Calling you Asian or calling you a Pakistani?

Yes. I’m just curious as to how Youd rather be described in a scenario where you can’t speak etc and it’s just someone giving a visual description

Do people really get offended by such things? If I see no blacks or asians on a profile I take it literally and assume my parents being British, myself being British has no bearing on the matter. I'm black so not for them.

Do I care?!! Hell to the no because life is too short to waste time on people not remotely interested in me.

That was exactly my point further up (that you dismissed) when I said people are so scared of offending you by saying Pakistani (when you are Indian) for not knowing the difference that Asian seems to be the ‘safe card’

rightly said!! I personally don't care either..but everyone has a right to choose!! so I never get offended!!

If someone's says they are not interested in Asian or anything, that's absolutely fine for me!! As I said, everyone has a right to choose!! but what I will be interested in to know, why they are not interested in certain colour or race!! This is purely to understand the reason without any emotions attached!! This could be a different interesting topic!! so will surely post it.. haha

I suppose it’s each to their own as diff people have diff preferences.

As stated above, asian is a safe option as it is quite generic in despriction where as being labelled indian/Pakistani/Bengali etc - one would need to be fairly certain to call you that.

Similar for those who are Chinese, Korean, Japanese - I wouldn’t like to guess and would say asian or oriental if I had to make that call.
