Conversational Narcissism

We’ve all had those people in our lives who seem to talk about themselves continually. Once given the opportunity to talk about themselves, they’ll snap it up in an instant showing little regard or interest in what you have to say. Ever. And if they do, you know it’s a fake mask of politeness.

They dominate most conversations and constantly feel the need to be centre of attention. The must give their opinion on everything and of course must be right.

Are you a conversational narcissist?

Do you have any in your life? How do you deal with them?

Until recently i didn’t realise that not asking others questions and being what can be perceived (to outsiders) as self absorbed can actually be a ASD trait.

Of course this doesn’t apply to everyone, but it’s food for thought.

Yeah it's funny how many people are like this and don't notice.

I must admit I've a friend I wind up by saying "I'm fine thanks for asking BTW" when she's been rambling a while.

Now you mention it I think I could be at heart.

I'm a good listener and know the one thing you should never do is relate that persons problem to your own. This takes me conscious effort to resist the temptation and replace my self analogy with a question about them.

Somewhere In The Ether…

So.......anyway there I was on my yacht with my harem, when all of a sudden there was a mighty bang. We’d been hit by a bloody great whale. Bloody thing caused me to drop my caviar. Anyway, we docked in Monaco and I was racing around the narrow streets in my Lamborghini when who should step out in front of me, George Clooney! I just missed him by an inch. Next, I got on my private plane etc.

I love football I could have turned pro, I was on Uniteds books, anyway I'll tell you what I think because I'm right and you should consider my feelings and I'm really good at football and I'm a pilot and I got the vc in Iraq and I'm going now because you lot don't say anything.

I was with one for 18 months and it was the worst experience of my life. As he bigged himself up he constantly stripped me down. By the time I ended up getting rid of him, my self esteem was even lower than it had been and he wore me down so much I had a breakdown and felt so useless as a person I nearly ended my life or tried to. I am just thankful my family were there to pick me up. It has taken a year and a half for me just to feel as though I am worthy of people spending time with me.
