According to our local Northampton officials our town is " A vibrant mix of boutiques, stores and a market square that are all the envy of other similar sized towns " . Fuckin Really . Where ?? . It's a cesspit that stinks of piss and it's full of betting shops, pound shops and empty shops . And I don't feel safe in my own town as everyone constantly gets verbally abused by certain people.

What is your town centre like and is it better or worse than it was 20 years ago ??

Pleasent enough. Just off seafront so perfect for shopping and then chilling with a bag of chips on the pier!

We have lots of pound shops, cafes, charity shops. But a small shopping centre and an indoor market, and outdoor market on a Friday. Still have to go out of town for lots of decent shopping x

Plenty of places to get your phone fixed and have coffee or fried chicken whilst you wait.

Our council is revamping the Town Centre and making it a rival to somewhere or another.

We got a real Costa coffee shop a couple of months ago. Nestled in between two chicken shops a betting shop and a piss poor convenience store.

I feel quite blessed where I am,I have a few town centres to choose from. Liscard, which is effectively Wallasey town centre is pleasant enough,a few pubs, beauty salons, tattoo studios,a post office and a small shopping arcade. Just up the road there is New Brighton,on a Bank Holiday this is a seaside resort to rival many others although,if it was up to me,I wouldn't have put a supermarket on the seafront and I'd do something with the marine lake. In the other direction there is Birkenhead,I've not really explored but the town center seems a lot more attractive than the name might suggest.I confess I had a preconceived idea before I moved here but it is quiet a pleasant surprise.

Just across the water,a long tunnel or a short boat ride away is the splendour that is Liverpool. Need I say more about that city centre? It has everything you could possibly want and more.

I absolutely love it here.

You are very correct with your description OP... you need to go to Market Harborough to see how a town centre can be developed with lots of quaint and vibrant independent shops...it helps that it has a really good indoor market too.

My work takes me around and about quite a lot, even visiting some of the wonderful town centres of the country. Most of them have quite distict and recognisable character but,in order to get to them you have to drive through miles and miles of tedious landscape ,endless retail parks, dual carriageways and office parks. Generally, you could be just about anywhere, they are almost indistinguishable.

This is more noticeable to me in places such as Oxford,Cambridge,Edinburgh or Salisbury where it is the beauty of the architecture that makes the ugliness of the surrounding concrete jungle seem so depressing in contrast.

People need somewhere to live and to work, obviously, but it doesn't have to be so samey and anonymous looking, does it.

Lovely independent coffee shops, weekly farmers market, an art gallery, a museum, a nature reserve, lots of green spaces from which you can see the London skyline, major supermarket, a Boots and Superdrug, leisure centre with two pools, private gym, library, train station, several restaurants, WH Smiths, florist...not too shabby for south London.

I am from the same town...and yes, the shops could do with filling and the market returning to it's former glory, but there are some great shops there too! If people actually used the town rather than the supermarkets or online then things might be better...but they would rather moan about how awful it is instead of encouraging vendors and buying from them... I know town shopping isn't convenient but if ya want a nice town then ya have to use it! Oh...and I have NEVER been scared of verbal abuse nor any other kind of abuse from anyone, day or night! (Have had more abuse from 2 years on fab than almost 46 years of Northampton town centre. I love this town and would never leave it again! Maybe it was leaving it that made me realise it is not as bad as we all thought

Derby's not too bad really, apart from the obviously increasing number of vacant retail premises. The Council seem hellbent on chucking money in the wrong direction though. There's a waterfall at the Market Place that's not been working for the past couple of years. When I enquired about it I was given 2 different reasons. One was that it costs too much to run! It's only a pump ffs! Seriously!! I worked on the refurbishment of the Council Houses for over a year, during which time they could have had some solar panels fitted to the roof as all the tiles were removed and replaced. The mind boggles sometimes

On the plus side, there is now a stronger Police presence in the town centre to deter the beggars and mamba heads

Commuter town really which just popped up in recent years so basically one shopping centre with Morrison’s and Aldi plus things like Greggs, Domino’s Subway, a funeral director, a hardware shop and a dentist.

Another two small shopping areas.

No clothing shops, no department stores or anything like that. Big mall 4.5 miles away and Glasgow 8.5 miles away and Paisley is accessible too.

My home town is dire. Don’t go very often, but went last week to pick up some bits. It was fecking awful. The council put the rent up and decent shops close only to be taken over by charity shops. If you want to buy tat, there’s plenty of choice, if you want to buy a nice shirt to go out in, then it’s either online or drive to Milton Keynes.

The town centre where I am is worse. A combination of the recession that saw most of the night life disappear and poor management by the council has left the town dead in the water. What little night life there is now too risky to try. Most weekends there are fights between east Europeans either with British lads or themselves. The council have wasted hundreds of thousands on 'improvements' that have closed public toilets, killed off the market and reduced parking by building on car parks. They have given planning permission to build new shops on the rugby club site yet there are three shopping precincts all with long term empty shops. The councillors responsible for the farse they call planning have been allowed to quietly resign. We have more coffee shops than you can shake a stick at, charity and betting shops coming out our ears and the usual money lenders, pawn brokers and discount shops.
