"I thought it was staged the 1st time I saw it too. I'm sorry but there was no need for that guy to climb the other guy was easily capable of rescuing the child himself " I checked. An average 4 year old weighs 18kg. For fucks sake, half the forum could bicep curl that on a good day.

"I think you should stop watching viral videos as they clearly wind you up lol It's checking the BBC in the morning that does it" Ah then I don't think the BBC should be promoting viral videos like that.... That's more a newsbeat type story. The BBC is certainly dumbing down its content of late.

"So there's a viral video of a 4 year old kid hanging off a building and a young malian migrant climbs (impressively fast) up and sort of helps the child back over. I can't help but assume the video was staged. There are two adults closer to the boy who do precisely fuck all while the rescue is taking place. 4 years olds weigh precisely fuck all as well so why the first guy needs help lifting him is beyond my grasp a physics. They position the boy is in, you just think - how the flip do you end up there? What does everyone else think? " there was a big gate between the people in the next flat and the kid which is why they couldn't reach him... but its nice to know there are still so many sceprtical people around...

Ok but you're ignoring the fact that one guy manage to climb across 4 of those (including going sideways) whilst the first guy couldn't climb over one and scoot across??? Skepticism is good and healthy. But actually, seeing as how my cousing is a fireman, his view is that the gate was in the way of the guy being able to securely heft the kid over. He could try but if the guy lost his grip. Game over. His perspective is that if the guy called emergency services they probably advised him to keep ahold of the kid and that he should not climb the gate and instead resassure the child and try to keep it calm. There is a chance it could be staged. Or it could be genuine heroism. Lets hope it was the latter.

There were cars beeping their horns and lot's of street noise, surely anyone inside the flat would have come outside to look what was happening. Are we supposed to believe the boy was left home alone at 4?" The father had gone shopping and left the child alone. Did you actually read the article?

I couldn't tell if they were touching" In the short cimp ive seen its a mixture of touching and holding the sleeve. At the end of the day the proceeduee holds true. Dont climb the gate: if you knock it over or it breaks its a risk to the child or an obsticle to the professionals. Stay within eye contact of the child. Psycholgically it reduces the risk of a human panicing and putting themselves in more danger. Stay where you are as emergency responders might ask for your help in clearing the area or an update.

"I don't mind if it was staged or not - the guy risked his life and did save a small child. I was impressed with his ease of getting up there too. It did seem a little strange that a guy was close - but I can also imagine he was perhaps too frightened to reach for the child, in case he didn't save him but caused him to fall." He was holding onto him from under a glass balcony. I just don't know how the child got there and managed to hold on at all!

The man is leaning around the gate so i have no idea what five inch gap you are talking about.

"Call me a miserable cynic but this very much looks like a staged stunt to showcase the rescuers free climbing adeptness (very impressive it is to as it happens and certainly far, far higher than the level of said skills an ‘average’ bystander is likely to possess) If this is indeed the case, then endangering a child’s life for fifteen minutes of fame is utterly reprehensible to put it mildly. I hope therefore that I am erroneous in my guess....but...." I'm as cynical as the next person, but I struggle to see how parents would go off shopping and leave their child home alone/dangling from a balcony hoping their neighbours will notice in time for the bloke to get there to rescue the child for a publicity stunt. Usually the Mancheusen by proxy types are front and centre. The parents have nothing to gain making themselves look irresponsible.

Some people just act on impulse whereas other stop to think first which is when their bottle goes. The guy who climbed up said he could barely stand up once the kid was safe because the danger he’d been in hit him. Well done to that man, who the he’ll in their right mind is going to dangle a 4 year old off a balcony for the sake of a video.

"I think may be we should be less cynical less distrustful and spend less time trying to criticise or find fault with the actions of others OP. I think that sometimes people do good and right things because that's the way we are made. I think we should be glad people put themselves at risk for others who they may not know. I think I'm happy that one child is safe today... " Does your first paragraph refer to the people who tried to make this about race? I'd hardly say the child is safe with parents so damn irresponsible.

"With reference to my own comments on this story; Firstly, I do sincerely apologise if my cynicism caused any offence to anyone as it was certainly not intended. My skepticism on the footage is based upon my knowledge of Free Climbing; It is a highly specialised art and it is overt from this perspective that the climber in question has some not inconsiderable practice in it. The other factor which made me question the ‘official’ version of events is based purely on subjective logic; Given that the ‘neighbour’ is ostensibly holding the child to secure them to the railing, would it not have been a more sensible option for the rescuer to enter the building and grab them from the other side i.e from within the apartment? Having said this, I fully accept that people don’t necessarily always opt for the most logical course of action in a crisis, as history has demonstrated time and time again. Either way and whatever the truth, we can all at least agree that the safe rescue of the child is the most important thing here " It was a good climb. No doubt about that.

That’s all well and good but you assume he had access to the building, there was probably an outer gate, a communal door and then the apartment door he’d have to get through. I’ve been in these situations and instinct takes over. I rescued a woman who had jumped from a bridge into water, I could have ran 100 yards and untied a rowing boat but I didn’t I just dived in and swam out to her and pulled her to safety. People don’t think they just act.

Either way and whatever the truth, we can all at least agree that the safe rescue of the child is the most important thing here It was a good climb. " Absolutely true, and until you are actually in that situation you don't know how you'd act.

It’s almost like an involuntary action, you just do it and think about it later.

" Doesn't the story that parents left a 4 year old home alone to go shopping, in a flat with an unlocked door to a balcony sound hard to believe though? Change that to parents going for their dinner in a bar with an unlocked patio door next to a road and then add two more children, yep it happens" I am glad you made that analogy because it is the one i have been using all day to make the same point.....

If he was an accomplished free runner then he would already be known, YouTube videos and such like. Watch his interview with the president, he sounds quite bewildered by it all and is quite matter of fact. Staged my arse.

"I very much doubt he stood at the bottom at the building and thought "hmmmm I could climb up and save that child, but hold on, the neighbour looks like he's got a hold of him, maybe I could go up the stairs and bust through god knows how many doors and ranomdly guess which apartment he's in, break in and pull him to safty" And I also doubt, some guy said "do you want a citizenship? What we'll do is dangle my child over the side of a building and you climb up and save him, then the president, without asking for proof, will grant you said citizenship"" Exactly. People are so quick to posit conspiracies or set ups that they don't stop to consider the impracticalities/unlikeliness of such a set up.

"Are some of you really suggesting that four adults (the absent parent, the two neighbours and the climber) conspired to hang a child from a balcony, confident that a fifth adult would film the daring rescue and then, by way of thanks the climber would be awarded citizenship as a thank you (which was their cunning intention all along)? As a conspiracy it would be ridiculously elaborate, inexact and high risk. How are they supposed to have attached the child to the balcony? What if the child kicked up a commotion as s/he was forced to hang from the ledge? What if s/he had fallen straight to the floor? Four adults ALL thought it was a risk worth taking? What if the reward wasn’t citizenship but “the key to the city” or some other symbolic award? The guy is a brave man. I imagine they all did the best they could in the circumstances. I expect the neighbour didn’t have a confident grip on the child. They all saved a child’s life. Conspiracy? Really? " I'm not suggesting the intention of staging the video was the foreknowledge that it would lead to citizenship. My assumption would be that they would be paid for the video. What i find hard to believe is: The father is irresponsible enough to leave a 4 year old at home and a window open, And The boy fell two floors to a balcony where the neighbour happened to be there / heard him in time to stop him falling further And The neighbour was not strong enough to lift him back over And This all took long enough that someone had time to film it And The father plays pokemon go. Any one of those statements is highly unlikely. It's the all of them together that i find hard to believe.

All boys I add, possibly because they are more daring and adventurous than girls? " I was in the garden with my husband and three children. My youngest was about two at the time. Our next door neighbours offered the children sweets over the fence and shortly afterwards I went inside to do some ironing. A little while later my husband came in and asked if our daughter was taking a nap. I looked at him puzzled and said I hadn't seen her. We looked at each other and started searching the house: we couldn't find her and we both went into panic mode. It had only been three years since I buried my son, I can't begin to describe the dread. The front door was locked and she couldn't reach it anyway. I opened the door anyway to see my neighbour walking up the path holding my daughters hand, she only had her nappy on and her dad's slippers. She had gone next door for more sweets. All kinds of scenarios went through my head...what would have happened if my neighbours door hadn't been open etc. Twenty three years later and I still have the chills.
