Should the UK create it's own GPS system?

It's probably better value to invest in a scheme that doesn't just rely on the UK to pay for it.

Europe is creating a fantastic new one, so it's probably worth the UK joining the EU, so that it doesn't have to pay for its own system.

Otherwise, all UK expenditure should be prioritised appropriately - I'm a bit clueless about where GPS needs are compared to, for example, extra NHS investment.

Well we were contributing to the EU system, but now we are leaving the EU, and their Galileo system. Some people are suggesting we should therefore build our own.

Yes we should have our own, although some of us are old enough to know how to read a map.....

Why the hell does anyone need a new gps system? The existing one works perfectly and costs us nothing. Galileo has soaked up billions of euros, doesn't give anything new, and can't ever generate any income.

We are already providing a significant amount of the tech for Galileo. So to build an independant system would not be that hard. But the EU may find their project less easy without the UK. Sometimes sharing can be a better option.

Apart from

Galileo: A civilian program of the European Space Agency in collaboration with a number of non-European countries, Galileo is intended to ensure independence from foreign military systems, such as GPS, which could cut off service during a war or time of crisis. Planning began in 2002, and an experimental satellite is in orbit. Plans call for it to be operational by 2012 and eventually to include as many as 30 satellites, 27 of them operational and three for backup.

Sounds a very practical and independent idea

But then some people rather than being a leading country in Europe want to be the bitch for the USA

It's fine it's income will come from the UK paying to use its services

If we do let's hope Fab are not involved with the development because based on their belief of where East Midlands starts and ends they'll put UK next to New Zealand!

Yes. We should invest in our own country's companys like how we used to. Before we gave up our car industry, airline industry, military hardware industry. Time we should part with the EU and start to rebuild what we have lost. British products used to mean quality, now it means poor quality owned by foreign owners.

It's already years late, the initial technology is now obsolete. When did you last pay money to use gps? There is no viable financial model for uk users to pay up enough to cover billions of pounds for an independent gps system. Would you pay, oh i don't know, say £1000 extra for a phone to be able to use a uk gps system?

Isn't the technology a very accurate atomic clock?

London and France

1. All current phones will be able to acccess Galileo. It’s the high accuracy system that commercial operators need that will be paid for ( as with GPS). And the Encrypted military system that is part of it.

2. The technology is not obsolete; it is ahead of the GPS by at least a generation.

3. It has anti-jamming and anti spoofing technology that GPS doesn’t have.

4. GPS loses significant accuracy at high latitudes (60 degrees plus). Due to advanced technology and better satellite positioning; Galileo has far greater accuracy beyond 60 degrees (N and S)

5. Galileo has an additional safety feature of being able to locate and track Emeggency beacons in case of ship or aircraft emergenciee

I find it unlikely that the UK will find itself in a conflict where the EU, US and Russian systems are all denied to us at the same time. In fact I don't think we should ever be in such a conflict!
