Due to people giving back word we've now got to look at boarding our puppy while we're on holiday which I really didn't want to do.

Is home boarding as good an option as it sounds or is throwing him in with a strange pack in a strange house likely to do more harm than kennels?

Check you local councils website they list home boarders on there ... be quick as home boarding can be booked up months in advance ... we have 2 booked in for Xmas already

I would always choose to place a dog with a family that boards. Some will take low numbers or singles. Last time I used a local animal shelter that offers kennel facilities. Big mistake. Dog was filthy when I picked him up, and nervous as hell. Not happy.It does depend on the dog. I had one that was a complete tart and was happy with anyone who would walk him and another that was a nervous wreck.

Home sitters don’t always have other dogs. I lived next door to a cpl that did this for a living and they didn’t have any of their own and they looked after dogs on the conditions of the owners

If they were sociable dogs, mine would sometime go round to see them but if they weren’t then they were the only dog in the house.

It was a trusted registered company advertised on the net and they had around 4-5 workers per area so always a back up if the main one wasn’t around or booked.

I met with them all but as he was my neighbour I always made sure he was free well in advance before I went away.

Just to be warned though that prices per night can be the same as kennels but they will be much more loved, walked and looked after at these homes.

Alternatively, there’s an app to meet people who like walking other peoples dogs due to having circumstances that prevent them having dogs. For a small yearly fee I now have two dog walkers who I now trust to look after them when I’m away and they do it for the love of the dog (which means free

I would depend on your dog and the boarders.

We have boarded guide dogs in the past as long as you stick to the routine your fine.

What dog do you have and does it mix well with others?

Do you not have any family or friends that will look after your puppy for you? I’m lucky that I have family that have dogs, so we help each other out. I wouldn’t leave my dog in a kennels, many don’t cope with it. I think the home stay option would be best, just make sure they have a good reputation. Ask at your local vet practice for recommendations

Have you considered a house sitting service? Basically you pay nothing but someone stays at your house for free but they look after your pets etc. I’ve done it and worked well, I’ve also house sat so know both sides of it.

It's the family/friends that have changed their minds about having him now they've seen how fast he's growing

and my chief puppy/cat/horse sitter (mum) is coming with us for a well earned break.
