Northampton Somewhere

....is it as shit as mine?

Full of Poundlands, charity shops and coffee shops mainly? A big 2 level BHS shut ages ago, the building has remained empty ever since. M&S have just announced that their store is closing to!!

I guess with internet shopping, out of town retail areas and MK a quick hop and a skip on the motorway retailers are being driven away.

It's such a fucking shame. I'm in Northampton btw.

Is it a similar story across the UK?

Ours is flourishing and you can get almost anything you can imagine, we’re very lucky in that we live near to a quirky tourist type city.

Stooped in history and rich in architecture.

Unfortunately that does usually result in everything being mightily fucking expensive and having to go shop elsewhere to find any value.

Evesham had suffered but it's turning the corner with more bars opening up, it's actually a good night now.

I haven't been to Colchester for years. I used to get the train from Felixstowe, it was like going on a little adventure!! I bet it's changed loads.

We own 2 shops ...our rates have gone up by 5200 pounds in 2 years...just not viable now days lucky we retire soon

We've got a lovely high street near us, butchers, green grocers, traditional bakers. Then you've got some lovely gift shops and arty type shops as well as numerous charity shops.

A larger town near by has a rubbish high street, most businesses close down dur to the rates being so high. One tiny shop was being charged £5k a month! Now it's pretty much charity shops and coffee shops.

That's the biggest contributor to the death of the High Street believe it or not. Since councils became responsible for managing their own budgets and income; business rates have risen on average 4% a year since 2002

After business rates internet accounts for the second biggest drop in footfall.

My friend told me about a new charity shop that's opened over 2 floors. She said its a like the Harrods of charity shops. I'm nipping in to go and have a nose tomorrow. While I'm there I think I'll have a coffee, place a bet, buy 5 for £5 in Poundland and have a kebab for lunch and pay over the odds to park my car!! Another mistake by our council....

The chain poncy shops are all here too down the road from Poundland -

Fired Earth and Jo Malone.

Sweaty Betty and White Stuff.

It's just depressing.

Lack of decent or affordable parking in town centres or anywhere near a station is a problem too. Makes people go to the supermarket with the big free car park on the outskirts of town as it’s easier

My local high street isn't very big. Sainsbury's went and was replaced by Wilkinsons. Woolworths is now an ethnic greengrocer/fishmongers. There's about 5 estate agents, a couple of barber's, a hairdressers, dry cleaners and assortment of greengrocers and technology shops.

It never was much of a high street . The local parade of shops is at least half filled with fast food or restaurants. There's nothing I go there for any more.

You wouldn't recognises the place i guess the town center is the same but all the shops will be different, all the army camps ha e been knocked down for new housing and a big super camp has been built

Every time we choose to buy on line from Amazon it's another nail in the coffin of the local shop.

Same every time we spend our cash in a money grabbing supermarket because it's percieved to be cheaper than your local veg shop/deli/butchers etc.

We can moan about the shops on the high street closing..or we can choose to support our local independent shops...before we lose them all.

The main high street (2 miles from city centre and running direct to) is dominated by sainsburys and tesco.

their purchasing power has eroded the independents and sadly the main high street now resembles a mixture of pawn brokers, cash for gold and pound shops.

Our town centre is dying. Everything moving to outskirts of town. We have 2 Aldi’s, 2 B&M’s, 2 Home Bargains, 2 McDonalds, 2 Argos, 2 Boots, 3 Costa’s & a drivethrough being built, loads of estate agents, travel agents & charity shops, thousands of new houses & an inadequate hospital......

I do have a lovely row of independent shops at the end of our road though

Our City centre is vibrant shops, bars and restaurant abound. It is a brilliant place to visit especially on a Saturday evening and sit and people watch, it can be highly entertaining.

All sounds depressingly familiar...

Nearest high street is awash with coffee shops, ex pubs and building societies converted into trendy eateries (also open for coffee), charity shops and estate agents.

Even the local council moved out...and sold the building to developers who are now building retirement flats. More customers for the coffee shops!

Hull

Some towns have bucked the trend.

Dunfermline, in Fife is booming by all accounts with retailers seeing a boom. So too are other towns in Scotland.

Down here in Warwick there aren't any vacant shops; there are only 5 shops of UK wide chains with all the rest being independent retailers.

In Leamington even with the big retailers in town centre sites there are still many Independently owned shops with no empty units.

Ours (small town) is also dominated by charity shops, nail bars, barbers and vape shops with a tiny Boots and Smiths. There's a great traditional sweet shop and a lovely jewellers but really not much else and the older shops are closing one after the other. I would happily support more local shops but obviously what you want to buy has to be there in the first place so it's a catch 22 when you go to a larger town or city as the remaining shops inevitably miss out on passing trade. There's a major tourist city 20 mins away with a daily market and every shop you can think of and that's where I'd go to get proper choice of shops and services.

By contrast it seems, my local city centre is on the up. Certainly a few coffee shops & cafes and some charity shops, but a good selection of restaurants and very adjacent outlet shops with high end brands and a lot of leisure options and events. It's interesting that the city centre premises, that struggle the most are owned by absentee landlords who the local council have no real influence over, although they are doing a reasonable job with the publicly owned spaces. The leisure and outlet centre is owned by a large private concern and they have invested heavily and are happy to physical and cultural links with the city centre for their mutual benefit.

yes Durham is the same .we've lost bhs and m&s. All we've got now is loads of charity shops and coffee shops ,poundland ,Iceland ,savers ,boots and a little next and m& co.they don't seem to want shoppers any more in Durham .they're building a new unit .this will have an odeon cinema and a few eateries .isn't it exciting ...NOT..they are also building an Everyman cinema ( a posh cinema where you can eat a meal as you watch a film and get waited on . you can bet that won't be cheap .its all leisure and pleasure now .soon be no shops .I'm really annoyed with the council for letting this happen .its all about money up here

one other thing i would blame are the landlord who only the building who change high rates to rent their shops when it been pay for 10 folds or more for what he pay for the building

Small towns seem to suffer more with the charity shop,coffee shop, pound shop holy trinity that repeats every 50 metres in some places.It says much about the viability of running a high St business.Charity shops use volunteers get given stock and are exempt from tax.Coffee shops are the biggest tax evaders on the high St

Well we have a m and s still. Primark is moving to bigger premises. Lidl is moving where primark is. We have a h&ms, WHSmiths, phone shops and shitty shops. No music or video game shops.

There's the odd empty unit here and there. Other than that Shrewsbury seems to be doing well. If a new business opens it does tend to be a food place. Pret A Manger and Wimpy being the latest additions. There's plenty of independent shops, I think Shrewsbury has more independents than any other UK town. I always like going into the Shrewsbury.

We have 2 Markets in Derby, everytime you go round them at least one stall has bitten the dust. If you moved them both under the same roof, there would still be loads of space to spare. Apart from all the other outlets that seem to have another "To Let" sign above them, when I worked on the new bus station about 10 years ago, there were about 10 retail units incorporated down the side of the building, only 3 of them have ever been occupied, and that is by a restaurant that hardly ever seems busy.

I really miss Maplins now they closed. Used to buy lots electronic components there.

Someone told me Pound shop (which used to be Wallworths) just closed in Balham.

And meals in new coffee shops/restaurants are around £12 coffee extra.

If you want wood for a shelf you have to travel miles now.

And Model/craft shops don't exist in London any more.

Northampton is just a wretched place. The town centre stinks of BO, fags and chip fat, and contains the most disparate bunch of lowlife scum you'll ever come across. As for the fake tanned women - there are less orange people in loompa land. Hateful, hateful place....

I like Shrewsbury, Frank’s brother has just moved there. We’ve been to Saffron & had a nice curry. Newport is a nice little town too

I live on the border of two small towns - roughly a mile from the centre of each. The one to the North is struggling with 19 shops currently empty and to let. At night it has lost it’s vibe and many decent stores have gradually moved out. The one to the South is heavily loaded with bars and restaurants but is buzzing most nights every week and the local shops seem to be doing well. 10 years ago it was the reverse. The rates on each are similar. Both are affected by the same out of town developments. One is currently cool the other isn’t. 10 years ago, the reverse was more the case

Slough Windsor ish

We are between two towns.... Windsor is great for shopping, Slough is a shit hole full of charity shops, nail bars, bargain market stall type shops selling rugs and tat and Polski Skleps. Needless to say we only go to Slough if we have to! Locally we have a fairly good selection of shops and lots of cafes and food outlets.

It's a lovely town. I forgot to mention Shrewsbury market hall was voted the best in Britain this year. I'll add Newport to my places in Shropshire to explore. x
