In theory yes. However the nature of my work means I would need to consider the impact on the family's I work with.

No chance, I've been asked to join a union before in a past job and refused.

"No chance, I've been asked to join a union before in a past job and refused."

Why. No digs serious question. I've been In same company for 20 years now so fully get it's easier for me than most. Always been in the union and was a rep until at least in my eyes it was no longer a union.

Hiding in the shadows

I grew up in a Derbyshire mining town.

I was on the picket lines in the 80s.

My main job now, I'm self employed - can't strike myself but I'd stand by friends who chose to strike for their rights

Unions are dangerous if used incorrectly and I've seen it at first hand working for local government. Poor reps, who often know fuck all about what their role is supposed to entail, deplorable motives and theyre often jumped up little twats with a deluded self-importance. In short, basically not what a Union is supposed to be and so often the wrong people get put into these roles.

Personally I'd never join a union and would be more than happy to fight my own battles.

I do fully agree about most reps and that's why I quite. I did stay a member but I haven't used them since. As you say I'm fully able to fight my own bottles but I do think a union is there for the 1s who can't. I respect your view

I was harassed and treated disgustingly by a number of colleagues working for the council. I did absolutely fuck all wrong (unless being in middle management is considered a crime) yet had to go through the best part of 12 months of personal hell which left me in despair.

Luckily I had a close friend who was an HR manager who fought my case as GMB.. yes, they are being named and shamed, were an absolute shambles and are up there with Northern Rail in the "as useful as a chocolate fireguard" awards!

It would depend entirely upon the circumstances... But I certainly would not strike unless I was fully appraised of all the facts and unless I felt it was completely necessary and unavoidable, and I certainly would not strike just because other people are.

It's more to do with politics, I'm not a labour supporter and unions tend to be closely aligned to that particular party.

My first job many years ago was a baker . Within a few months of me starting they called a strike . We were all in the union ( had to be as it was a requirement to get the job ) . So the management came round asking who wanted to work despite the strike , and I said I did . I only took the job as it was decent wages and I’d just fathered my first born son . Anyway , I was one of only five in the whole company who worked the instore bakeries during the strike . We only stayed at each store for about 3 hours , because once the strikers got wing of where we were we got beaten up . Nice huh ?

Anyway I couldn’t join a union even if I wanted to , and I certainly wouldn’t strike anyway .

That’s terrible , but twice in a week I was beaten up for working during the strikes in 1977 .
