"Ive been doing a intermittent fasting and keto diet since january. I have a 5 hour window of eating and getting my daily needs then dont eat anything outside those hours. I only eat around 15 grams of carbs a day which comes from a few veggies, the rest of my calorie intake is high fats and proteins. If your in late 30s onwards i would recommend anyone moving to a fats and protein diet, you get way more energy using fats as fuel for the body, fats like nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, almond butter and peanut butter, if your a meat eater you can have your bacon and sausages and steaks...all with almost zero carbs. Google intermittent fasting and keto. I feel great and the fat falls off you too. Some mistakes people make is they eat way too much fats and carbs in the same meals..examples chocolates, pizzas, steak and chips, bacon chips and toast...theres hundreds of examples. Fats and carbs are both fuels..both together the body will store and turn into fat. Carbs with protein is also not the best idea...the body struggles to digest these 2 together it takes much longer...its best to eat carbs on their own if you was to eat carbs that is. Buy yeah ive been into fitness and nutrition all my adult life and i really would tell anyone to try intermittent fasting. The health benefits for it amazing. Have a google and see for yourselfs. " This Keto rocks for sure TB

"I don't understand diets??? I'm an endurance runner so my diet is an important part of my sport. We're biological machines we've evolved into what we are today Fasting and fad diets only work in the short term everyone who does them always gains weight after they come off them (ok flood gates for abuse have just opened) Why not eat normally at regular times but cut out fried foods processed foods and sugar. Meet veg and dairy. No matter what diet you adopt you will always loose weight in the first week. Even if you eat cake every day for a week you will loose weight in that first week (it won't do your health any good but you will loose weight until your body adjusts and status storing again) A diet is a lifestyle choice so unless you plan to stick to it for the rest of your life I'd simply cut out processed foods entirely " The man that invented the carb based diet and gel shots for athletes is Dr Tim Noakes. He has admitted over and over again that he was utterly wrong and I heard him say it again on Sunday at the Public Health Collaboration conference. He got a ten minute ovation and most of the 300 delegates comprising mostly of doctors, scientists, engineers, nutritionists and cardiologists cried. It’s not a fad diet.

I love you Topsy 95% of diets fail long term, backed by copious research. Short term, it’s easy to lose weight. Maintaining your weight and being able to live happily without falling on and off the wagon is what you are looking for. So as has been said, find a lifestyle and way of eating you can stick with. And has also been said, low carb is a fantastically healthy way of doing this, backed up by loads of research by some amazing people, so it’s only a fad if you make it one. And you might want to look into low carb/Keto ultra marathon runners if you still think you need carbs for energy TB

"Sweet potato, roasted in a dish with cherry tomatoes, spinach, courgette. Wang some spoonfuls of ricotta cheese on, some chopped chives and break some eggs to bake on top. It’s epic! " Sweet potatoes are anything but low carb! Good for real food/clean eating but not for low carb. One would take me over my limit for the day on its own! TB

Ten years of eating less than 10-20g of carbs a day, intermittent fasting, extended fasting and eating amazing food means every part of my health and well-being is better now than when I was in my 30’s. Millions of us eat properly this way and have done since humans were invented.

"I've not read the rest of the thread, I tried no/low carb but couldn't do it, I love pasta far too much. But these were a couple I still eat now as they were really tasty. Pastry less quiche. Creamy Chicken and mixed mushroom pie, only just the filling with filo pastry on top (awesome), both served with plenty veg. " I felt terrible when I did it. I had no energy and constantly felt sick.

I now just eat what I enjoy, but portioned right.

Diet+Exercise =Weight Loss" That didnt answer my question...why is a low carb diet not sustainable? The body can use fats as a more efficiant source of energy for fuel. Ive not had more than 15 grams a day of carbs for 5 monyhs, i eat high fats. Ive got way more energy..my body fat percentage has dropped, my muscle mass has not dropped. More and more athletes are doing intermittent fasting and keto than ever before.

"there are multiple factors involved so the notion of simplicity isn't applicable. the human body requires (depending on activity requirements) a constant supply of vairiable enegery sources. I will acknowledge that no/low carbs can and will bring about weight loss undoubtably. However depending on your lifestyle a significant reduction in any of the body's core energy needs (protein/carb/sugar/fat) results in a natural equilibium imbalance. Carbs are essential for exercise, protein for muscle etc... depending on need the end product is not sustainable... balance is essential, therefore diet+exercise will always = weight loss IF that is the desired outcome. " Still wrong! Have a look at gluconeogenesis. The CICO myth has been busted wide open and seriously, read the science, not the dogma. Tim Noakes is your man, the one that invented carb diets for athletes and gel shots. The man who ran over 70 marathons and ultra marathons and ended up with diabetes. He knows his science is now utterly wrong and is an advisor for many ultra athletes on how to achieve maximum success on a diet based on fat and protein.

Reintroduce carbs and inside 2 weeks you will put every lb back on. that was more my point
