I think tattoos are a bit of a marmite topic, they tend to divide opinion.

I’m not a fan. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a body and thought it looks better for having a tattoo.

And sometimes I think they really detract from the beauty of the body. But that’s just me.

Totally agree . You only get one canvas and once it’s used that’s it .

I always tell my daughter whose 21 that by not having any she will be the one catching glances on a beach in ten years time . Not the majority

I can understand the inner story thing. We lost our mum couple of years ago and my little sister sees ladybirds in odd places and she relates this to our mum. She has had a discrete ladybird tattooed on her inner wrist

I had my tattoos for no other reason than I wanted them and I like them. I do like when they get complemented but that was never a motivation in having them and I certainly don#t worry that people might dislike them

I think there's an inherent misunderstanding here, that the purpose of a tattoo is to "improve" the body. Most tattoo enthusiasts enjoy tattoos as pieces of art in their own right, in a living, breathing medium. Not as a means to an end.

Actually I'm going to add a caveat as that sounds like a definitive fact; I should say I'VE FOUND that most tattoo enthusiasts THAT I'VE COME ACROSS. There are, of course going to be exceptions, and I can't speak for the opinions of others, merely my observations

I love the more abstract type ... celtic designs, tribal, flora etc. I think they can look fantastic. Not so keen on the picture/text type, although I can admire the art and talent.

Never had any myself, I'm way too fickle to choose anything so permanent.

I don’t think it does. I like those type of tattoos, I’d safely say, I think they’re my favourite type.

A tribal tatto is as good as another tribal. But I’m not going to remember them as much as one which someone can enhance its appeal with a small tale. You know?

I think if you like them you like them. Or not. Completely down to personal preference. As for mine, they are for me, as others on the thread have said. They are my own design and I appreciate them. On others, there's ink that I find more appealing on some too.

A few. If I'd known then at 18, what I know now they wouldn't have been done. But as an over excited teenager with my own money I just got whatever flash I liked at the time. Not too many thankfully. But live and learn. Nothing that can't be lasered (now that bloody hurts) and covered in the future.

The golden unspoken rule of tattooes is; you never, ever criticise somebody's tattooes.

Nobody ever says "So you have a new tattoo. I can't say it's that good."

The social convention is to always say it's lovely, even if it's not.

Yes there are some stunning tatts, but also some are average and some are shit. But you must, by unspoken law, always say they're lovely.

Either there are a lot of liars, or there are a lot of people who can't tell good from average or bad.

I think you've made a good point here.

My tattoos are black and grey, quite big visible designs. I think people expect me to be rude and nasty because of them.

I'm probably one of the most scrupulously polite people you'll ever meet. (Doesn't come over in my profile I know lol)

I think you still get a lot of judgement for having both tattoos and piercings.

Also the comment about quality and suitability is bang on. You feel you have to compliment people even if it's shit. I try to just not say anything.

My sister got the crappiest lion ever done. She loves it though.

I'm in the 'I got mine for me' camp.

Mine do have a story but it's very personal to me and noone would know it from looking at them.

I've only had one person comment in the negative about mine and that was a family member who decided I'd ruined my body, it's never stopped anyone meeting me and to be honest despite being in visible locations most people don't even notice, often taking weeks before going 'oh you have tattoos'

It absolutely suits some people and they can carry them off. Some can look beautiful and rather sexy and some can look so trashy. I have always wanted one but never found the right one and wouldn’t know where to have it placed for fear of looking trashy.. once it’s done it’s done.

We obviously like them ha ha.

Some of our tattoos have meaning, some of them are just because we liked them but they are all apart of who we are.

Having said that, some tattoos aren't the best. I have seen some terrible ones.

Each to their own for me. I don't dislike blank canvases or busy canvases. If I find a person attractive and they're not an arsehole, brilliant!

. I generally like tattoos that can be covered though. My ultimate on a man is muscly tattood arms it just has a instant reaction for me.

I think with tattoos it's all about the art and using your body to portray that art. I have one on my back that people don't usually get to see and it means so much to me that I don't really give a damn what others think. I have my next one booked in for 3 weeks time. I'm traveling over a hour and a half to get it done as I only trust one person to do it the way I want.

I’m not a fan. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a body and thought it looks better for having a tattoo.

And sometimes I think they really detract from the beauty of the body. But that’s just me.

I love my ink and will continue until I run out of ideas or space....whatever comes first.

As said, it’s personal preference and if someone doesn’t like them and doesn’t want to sleep with me because I have them then so be it. You can’t be everyone’s cup of tea

I used to have a real downer on tattoos and I still don’t want any myself but I’ve been with a couple of tattooed women recently and I surprised that I found them a turn on instead of a turn off.

I tend to agree, can't say I ever think tattoos improve someone and wouldn't have one myself.

That being said I can look past them if they aren't too extreme and if I otherwise really like someone. They do tend to be one of the things I use as a filter when searching on fab though, particularly if more heavily tattooed.

Wouldn't disagree that they can be appreciated as pieces of art in their own right and personally that's how I would prefer to see them, on a piece of canvas.

Tattoos are on a body, become part of the body. So it's only reasonable that people will look at them and consider them in the context of the whole body and whether it makes it more or less attractive. Just the same as you would a new haircut, you don't consider it in isolation but whether it makes the person more attractive to you or not.

Are some amazing tats nowadays, however nearly all are stencils, so no real talent apart from going round lines and filling in.

The free hand artists or the Japanese painted female body wow, sometimes mind blowing.

Thats why tattoos fade...the ink collect elsewhere in body..and given the heavy metal content of inks. Thats why when see athletes or people who claim diet and exercise so important...yet body covered in lead. Don't get it. What make you look better?

Have to say when planning a tattoo I've never once considered whether it would make me more attractive or I would become unfuckable by some, quite frankly because I don't care.

Its my body, I choose to do as I please with it. Same as I choose to eat junk food and not exercise. I might not appeal to the masses, but its no big deal, for every 100 profiles I view I'd unlikely let 99 of them within a mile of touching my naked or tattooed flesh.

I’m guessing, as with most things, there would need to be a certain amount of lead to cause any poisoning. You could say the same about aluminium in deodorant or petroleum in creams.

There has not been lead in paint for at least the last 2 decades even cellulose paints are now water based.

Lead and heavy metals are in most tat inks, how do you think they make the pigment up

I one or two well-done tattoos on a lady, but for my taste a lot of people go too far. There comes a point where I can't see the tattoos as an adornment to the person any more; the tattoos become overwhelming and the person seems like they're just a canvas for the ink to go on.

If someone decided they didn't want to meet me based on my tattoos then that would be their loss. Also, going back to the whole meaning thing.. only one of mine has a meaning and it's a quote reminding me to keep strong and not self harm anymore but the rest are just things I like, each to their own

We both have quite a few tattoos and have more planned. Each and every one of our tattoos have a meaning or reason as to why they exist, some reasons could be considered more trivial than others.

My tattoos are there for myself and I don’t ever consider whether anyone else will find them attractive. So far it hasn’t stopped me from getting attention.

I love hubbies tattoos and know that he is a beautiful piece of art in my eyes with tattoos or without.

Love my ink, I like ink on other people and appreciate the work involved. I have my ink for me though, I've never sought approval from anyone for anything and the same applies to my body and what I choose to do with it.

I can appreciate the work and creativity that goes into a lot of the designs but for me nothing is more beautiful than clear, tanned,toned skin. Or clear,toned, soft, milky, white,skin.
