Your job - just a means to a pay packet?

I was chatting with a business acquaintance yesterday. We were discussing someone I'd recently employed who's not progressing as well as expected. He said something that rings true -

Some people treat their job purely as a means to a pay packet.

Is this you? Do you just come & go or, do you have a sense of purpose & a real commitment to your work & the company.

I've done both in my time.. depends on my motivation. In my previous long term job I had the ambition squeezed out of me so admit by the end I was just getting to the end of every month. Some jobs I've been really motivated for.

No. I'm fortunate to be in a position where pay isn't my main focus when considering a job so I do a job I love and when my contract ends after the summer I'll be looking for something as fulfilling.

My pay is wank so ...

It's both to me. It pays my essential bills, so therefore is a means to a pay packet, however I'm the kind of person that takes pride in what I do. So I will do my job to the best of my ability and my standards are incredibly high.

I don't want to progress any further in my field, been there, done that, hello breakdown and 9 months off sick.

I love my job, I’m passionate about it and literally waiting for my manager to retire so I can jump into that role

I always give my all to any role, but I’ve been in my line of work for 17 years on and off and will probably be until I retire!

Just ask yourself, would you do you’re job for nothing ?

Unless you have another form of income then the answer has to be yes.

I actually enjoy my job but let’s face it if I won the lottery it would take about 30 secconds to decide to quite

I done both and I think it's down to how management treat the individual (if I spell the right I don't know haha) and also how the individual treats management so can swing both ways to be fair

I used to love my job, but now it is a means to an end. For what I do I earn a decent salary, so feel rather trapped currently as being the sole earner I can’t afford to take a drop in pay.

(Work is in process to change my situation, but it’s slow going)

I’ve done the same job for 30 years across 3 different companies. Each time I’ve moved I’ve taken my accounts with me.. hence I have a great job with my current stakeholder employer.

It’s a tough old world out there - it’s all about proving your worth and keeping the figures up there but I have to say I enjoy the job, committed to it, go the extra mile... but!

I FRIGGIN HATE ALL THE CORPORATE RED TAPE AND BULLSHIT!

On the railway we all know we could be replaced.

That doesnt mean we do any less or sometimes more than is expected.

I enjoy my job and it pays well and its a wage but a wage I enjoy earning because of the people I work with.

I love my job - but I wouldn't do it for free!

The only other thing I really want to do probably wouldn't pay the bills, so I'll save that for when I'm retired.

The nature of the work I do and the family's I deal with mean that I am invested in this job way more than seeking a pay packet. But I've done the latter and in a target and bonus driven environment working for the pay packet has been rewarding

I'm in a unique position at my workplace being the only person there who works out of choice rather than financial necessity.

I need my job for entirely different reasons. Being a full time live in carer for my mum means my job is a form of respite for me. It's only 12 hours a week but it gives me a chance to be away from my mum, to be surrounded by other people and not be isolated, it's an opportunity to be myself for a short while instead of being entirely focused on caring.

It's nice that I get paid for the work I do but I would quite happily exchange it for something in the voluntary sector and do it for nothing.

Sometimes it is a more of a feeling like it's just living to work but other times it is more fulfilling. Of late the former seems to increasingly be the case

I only work in jobs and environment I enjoy, where I feel adequately challenged and appreciated, and where U like the people and the culture.

I figure that if you have to spend a significant proportion of your life there, it has to be a positive experience.

It's worked for me so far.

I worked in an industry that I loved doing a role that I loved! I was an optical dispenser which was interesting, intellectually stimulating, sometimes challenging. Sadly, my employers in this industry all destroyed my desire to stay. I worked for 3 employers and was treated badly by them all, it soured the entire industry for me and I will never choose to work in optics again.

My current role is in a small call centre, 15 hours a week less than my last optics role and pays the same. I work Monday to Friday mornings, get all bank holidays off, have very little stress and great colleagues.

Do I love the role and company? No. It suits me but at the end of the day, all it really is is a pay packet. I do my job to the best of my abilities and then come home. We could possibly survive adequately without my salary but I would miss the act of going to work too much to give it up.

A little bit of both. I adore my job and would happily do it for free. But not the internal politics that come with it. I work within the bitchiest, nastiest back stabbing team I have ever worked for. And I hate that part of it.

We are supposed to be helping our clients, but half the time it turns into a he said, she said competition.

I'm looking for a new role, but it needs to be a similar sort of wage as I can't live on anything lower.

In my job you have to love and have a passion, if you are going just for the money then it will show in your work and the care and time that goes into it all, the moment that passion goes then it’s time to hand my activities belt up and move on.

Geeky x

I was given a great piece of advice years ago. Work to live, don't live to work. I've seen too many people let work rule their lives to look at a job as anything more than a means to an end.

When the day comes that i don't enjoy my job, I will quit.

Until then I will keep getting out of bed at silly o'clock

I am the front man of the company, without me it wouldn't work.

Love work

The only thing bad about work is ungrateful employers who think that because somebody works for them, they have a right to ask for lots for little reward.

I set up 2 companies, employed people on the same payscale as i was on . They knew this as i showed them the payslips.

2 & 1/2 years & 3 years into both businesses i sold up to the former employees who earnt enough to buy me out .

They wont change how it works because everybody gains the same share of the reward.

Will start another 1 or 2 companies up again on the same basis. but having a work break at the moment as committed to something elae for the time being

My job is the most amount of money I can get paid for the least amount of inconvenience hard work to me.

I’m pretty sure I could get paid more but there would be strings attached in the form of more stress longer hours.

If I won the lottery tonight and it was a big enough sum to support the kind of lifestyle I’m am used to then I would not go back into work.

That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t do something else maybe volunteer work or work for a charity

But doing what I do now no not a chance

I have two jobs. One is my career such as it is, which I love and put my heart and soul into. The other is menial long-term temp but still a great job which I value a lot.

Neither pay a great deal, but I'm lucky enough to be able to prioritise happiness over income.

Depends on if its a job that you have that was all you could currently find in order to pay the bills or a career choice in something you loved. And whether the company values its workers or just uses you to get its work done.

I sell my time and skills in exchange for money.

That's it.

I'm not here to change the world, only to earn enough to enjoy the time that i am here for.

Does your friend expect people to grow his business for free? I bet he doesn't do it for free.

I have had one successful career and now guess I do look at my job as just a pay packet. I have little interest in the company and it future, that may be because I work in an area which I am good at but it is not something I want to do.

I work to live, not live to work

I'm a dominatrix and showgirl. I'll never earn enough to buy property or have a decent pension but I've been flown around the world to perform and DJ, beaten up politicians and generally have a fabulous time doing both. Wouldn't have it any other way
