Supermarket bargain sections

Where they put all the almost out of date stock and mark it down to low prices.

At our local supermarket every night there's always a crowd of old people and Asian ladies waiting for the stock to get marked down. Bread, vegetables, fridge stuff.

They clearly need it as there's no way they ever let anyone else get close.

Should these bargain sections be restricted to be for just those people that really need it?

I don't see how the logistics of that would work? Would there need to be a security guard standing by to assess people's means??

There was a lady who used to wait for the man to come out with his trolley and grab everything as he marked items down.

Quickdraw McGraw I called her.

One man bought up every half price leg of lamb for his restaurant, in a Tesco express after Easter. Apparently, they over ordered.

It would be nice if they could share out the saving a equally, but it's unworkable I think.

I think they tend to be saved for the guys that work in those supermarkets. When you see them doing their shops they never buy anything at full price. It’s pretty obvious that they hide the stuff that’s about to go out of date, mark it down and then buy it themselves.

And.. once I bought 3 innocent veg pots for 30p each, except they all also had a coupon on the lid for 50p off the next purchase. I think I’m still owed money as the shop refused to honour it.

Not sure how your "Whoopsies for the Needy" would work.

When I worked in a supermarket, back in the day ,huge amounts of food was thrown out.

At least now some of the shops donate perishables and short dated stock to charities.

If it wasn't for those mark downs I wouldn't have been able to feed a family of 3 adults, pay all the bills (apart from rent) and be able to do my gardens and stop from going nuts (also all marked down plants) on 50 quid a week! I think the asda near us was pretty bad at their ordering...luckily! Ended up pretty brutal by the time I stopped needing it tho, was craziness!

Yes of course. Naturally they try to sell it while they still can.

Still better than binning it though.

Oh I agree especially as binning it costs money whist the charities don't charge them to take it away...still it makes tesco look very benevolent eh..

When there all fussing around it I sand back and say (loud enough) look Tracey there's a £10 note on the bottom shelf by the pizza.

And then watch for the bite. Classic works every time.

I got a couple of big boxes of assorted Lindor yellow label with expiry Dec 18 this week at T@sco.

Will do as a Cpl of thank you gifts.

Love it when Morrison's or m&s reduce their bouquets as well.

Stumbled on this a few years back in my local Tesco . Was walking past the chap marking down the food and he said ‘want a chicken ? 50p’ . I thought well yes why not and got chatting. 7pm every evening he said . No one else there....subsequently my freezer is full of food with yellow labels on .

No mate....what pisses me off with tesco is the expensive stuff they tip to landfill rather then give it to charities...and believe me this stuff has no sell by date and it's non food but a lot of charities would benefit by it. So it just pisses me off when I see them doing gimmicky things like this that makes them look benevolent when they are far removed from that.

Rant over

I only buy what I actually need and not stuff to stock my freezer up. I don't go at night though, it's first thing in the morning I see stuff. I only buy meat if I will use it that day. I don't think they should restrict it, as I don't see how it would work. X

Ours seems to do that too. I get all excited when I see the yellow label and it's just a bag of brown bananas down from 60p to 55p.

My son worked In Tesco while he was at college and was responsible for the reductions, he used to hate it because the same group of old smellies would wait to accost him. It got to the point where he had to shout at them to let him do his job without them barging him all over the place.

Don’t they send some of it to the local food bank as well ?

In some supermarkets it’s not all put together it’s just reduced in its original shelf place. That’s a better way to do it. Fairer i guess.

They do that at ours too. Poor young lad looks terrified. In fact sometimes he makes them wait as they're too boisterous.

I do t look at the reduced section mostly because it's short dated and I'd just waste it anyway.

My other half always looks for the reduced multipacks of beer with one or two missing though!

I ended up getting into a barney with an arsehole of a man in our local Asda who was giving this poor woman dog's abuse cause she wasn't marking stuff down quick enough. I understand that some people need these bargains to get buy but a lot of it is plain greed. Who the fuck needs 6 garlic breads and 8 tubs of hummus that bad anyway?

To be fair, if it's that much if an issue the staff would be better taking the stuff into the back to reduce it then bringing it back onto the floor.

True...just a shame that a grown man felt it was acceptable to verbally abuse an older woman trying to do her job.

Agreed. Verbal abuse is unacceptable. In terms of the people lurking around the reducing trolley, if it was done in the back it would save staff a lot of hassle.

And how would you do that?

I never knew about bargain section or been in a Lidl until I met Ben. He does the shopping and is quite proud of his hauls. I thought he was exaggerating when he said he gets tossled by Asian ladies and African men in the melee at the bargain section.

Thing is not everyone struggling is on benefits, so no.

I used to do the reductions in Tesco and would get followed around. It was pretty creepy. I had set rules of how much to reduce by at what time of day yet certain people would try persuade me to knock off more. I used to hide out the back if I saw them coming.
