Bought a (BMW) Mini Cooper S last week, its making a grinding sound when going through the gears. Goes into gear very smoothly but when releasing the clutch into 3rd ,4th and 5th gear, terrible grinding noise like a bearing. Dip the clutch and the noise goes. Any idea's you gorgeous lot

Transmission shaft input bearing possibly, weird how it's not in all gears though.

A world all of his own

If it disappears when you press the clutch it's highly likely to be the clutch release bearing. Get the clutch changed at the same time

That’s ridiculously expensive, had mine changed on my insignia for just over £500

Surely covered by the 3mth warranty or did you buy private?

Sounds like the secondary motion shaft (layshaft) bearings in the gearbox are going. This shaft is mounted quite high up in the box so not submerged in oil, only lubricated by splash and mist lubrication. Repair the bearings ASAP or it will create wear on other gearbox parts like synchromesh baulk rings. A replacement/2nd hand box can work out cheaper depending on labour rates. Make sure you replace the input shaft oil seal, they can leak once moved. Last thing you need is oil on the clutch, a DMF and friction plate are expensive. Seems quite a common fault with many manufacturers these days as they try and make gearboxes compact to fit more vehicles. In the past the shafts were all mounted low and got better lubrication. Good luck.

Yep Def sounds like the dual mass flywheel especially if noise goes when you dip clutch

DMF problems tend to be evident in all gears as it's before the box. Layshaft issues have been in BMW technical bulletins.

German cars are no better than others no matter what people say. They have a habit of cutting corners in places where the owners won't notice and results in unexpected big bills. They also bury their heads in the sand and ignore issues. I discovered that when I worked for them, the amount of failures under warranty that they wouldn't pay for caused by poor quality was disgusting.

Sounds like the sincromesh is fucked, its the part that opens to let it slip into chosen gear,if it is that then its a fresh box im afraid

I was told by a car dealer that they are notorious for gearbox failures, you can look forwards to £850 bill, sorry.

From someone who rebuilds them boxs

It's a bearing Nothing to do with the clutch hand it back to the garage you bought it from and get it rebuilt , do not except a secondhand on as you could the same problem down the road

It a very comeback problem with them boxes
