I just use the one that comes with the pics app on my phone - works perfectly well for basic editing

Best free is snapseed

You can cover tattoos without making it obvious

You can lift shadows

Adjusts tone curves

Add writing

Colours

It's the best

Yes, all I want to be able to do is crop and the odd black and white or sepia filter.

Exactly!! And black and white seems to be my default mode
