FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK EIGHTEEN!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!

It's Week Nineeen! It was lovely to see everyone at the Fab Crap Runners’ Club parkrun and social. We’ll do another in a couple of months. I hope everyone is having a lovely bank holiday weekend in this beautiful weather.

.

.

.

SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB... SEX CLUB...

The FCRC sex-club social will be on 8 June at Vanilla Alternative from 8pm. Everyone is welcome. If you’ve never been to a club before, come along with us. It’ll be loads of fun to sit in the hot tub gossiping! There’s no obligation whatsoever to play with anyone. I can meet nervous newbies outside so we can go in together.

(Please note, you'll need to ensure you're a member of the club (Vanilla Alternative) and that you've booked a place for the event itself well in advance).

Please RSVP.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Let’s enjoy this gorgeous weather!

Mrs Trellis x

PS - Don't forget to RSVP for the sex club social! All are welcome.

Damnit - typo in the text above! It’s Week 19!

Who is planning on coming to the sex club meet? I’ve being doing extensive research and I can now say, with absolute certainty, that sex is more fun than running. So come along!

We’re on for Fri 8 June and may be bringing a fairly new couple with us who are fuggle friends. Looking forward to it as we haven’t been to a club for nearly 3 years. Mind you, I’m missing karaoke for this so it had better be good!

We also need to start thinking about the next parkrun and social, which was soooo much fun on Saturday (apart from the chasing pugs which was just bloody hot).

Haven't 100% decided if I'm going to the club yet.

I am now a member and did try to pre-book, but they told me that I didn't have to as a single lady?

Took down a 10k race. (my first at this distance)

My last proper race was ten year ago and was a short 3k. I did very well in that and got a good time.

And now I’m older, ....anyway, on Friday I ran this race with the aim of just finishing without dying, and getting home in under 1hr. I should mention the searing heat on Friday.

The course had the most horrible Hill climb that my calves have not yet recovered from, but my recorded chip time was 59.54. .

I couldn’t be happier. Next time I might even train a little.

Just keep running

I've signed up for a 5k run thing with work. From the 25th I've got 8 weeks to try get this wreak of a dad bod into finely tuned body of an adonis (is that the right word ) failing that I'll settle for crawling across the line as I have a conery. How fecking stupid am I. Shhiiiiit

Nice one. Speaking to friends who run marathons, ultras and Iron Man's, it's as much mental strength as physical especially when it gets to the final 7 miles.

Ive no idea how true this is. Just work at a pace your comfortable with, not competing with others just do what you can do

Walking before you can run is advisable really...get used to moving your legs for 30 minutes...then start to introduce bits of slow running interspersed by walks. If you don’t want to carry a phone that is.

And depends how fast you are. The 10 k on Saturday had a 35 min finish (that guy did 3 laps in the time I did 2) and a 1 hr 40. Everyone is different.

Week 4 run 1 done today, im not going to say it was a complete success, 4 minutes into the 1st 5 minute run i had to walk (had really bad stitch) but i did pause the app whilst i walked for 20 seconds or so then restarted and finished the rest of the session off. Hopefully wednesday will be successful

I've been out most of today working on 1 car or another. Doing just that in this heat was getting a bit much I just can't even imagine running in it but I guess that's the mind set I'm going to have to change. It's really driving home now just how hard this is going to be. I really am a fish out of water but failing isn't an option....

Took a week out after my 10k but did start to feel guilty so went out on Monday and did a little 4 k...

Right I have a question regards a training programme. .. The half marathon I've booked on is in October. I've also got a couple of 10k races between now and then.. The running plan is a 12 week plan tho I still have around 22 weeks. What I'm planning on doing is taking my running all the way up to almost full distance at around 13 weeks out.. then dropping ithe right back down to a couple of miles and rebuilding.. I'm going this do this on a run 3 times per week..

Would any body advise me to do it this way or is there another way..

Thanks for any advice

There’s lots of ways to do this, and I’m sure other coaches will chip in later. My preferred way to do this is to build up your longer run (for stamina at a perceived effort level of 2/5) at the weekend slowly over the whole period...and there’s no problem in actually going over distance with a half (so up to a max of 15 miles if you are comfortable). The other two sessions in the week should be spaced out, with one concentrating on speed-stamina (longer intervals of 1-2K times 3 at a perceived effort level of 3/5), and the other being a shorter speed session or fartlek (speed-play) with intensity raising to 4/5 for short periods.

There are training programmes to get you to marathon on 3 runs a week - it’s the effort variation which is the key (and the rest days).

View the 10Ks as “marker points” where you run your Half target race pace or even slightly faster (like a tempo run).

Hope this helps...don’t push too soon too early, but you are starting from a strong base.

As T says.

The easiest way to do fartlek is to use lampposts. Pick a lamppost in a bit up the road and walk/jog to it. Then sprint for one (later 2 or more) lamppost then jog again for your recovery.

Did you push yourself to get to that 6.7k?

I pulled my leg muscles by pushing myself too far a couple of weeks ago and stick by the 10k app now. I know everyone's different, but this works well for me.

Nope, didn't push myself but it is up and down hill, up hurts then it just carries on, i walk for a couple of minutes and it goes off but comes back as soon as i start running again

I think I need to follow 10k app as i can't run constantly and haven't for a few weeks

No the app doesn't say stretch, just walk 5 mins at either end but my finish is about 10 mins walk as its a steep uphill

That steep walk alone may need some recovery.

As above, work in some stretches to put everything back in place and your legs shouldn't feel as heavy for your next run.

Week 4 of C25K and run 3 this evening.

We are really enjoying it and enjoying the noticeable change to our stamina and recovery times.

I (Mr S) though really struggled with cramp in my foot arches last run so went and got my gait analysed. On the video you could clearly see how my angle was angled incorrectly so now have a nice new pair of Brookes running shoes. Hopefully that will help cure the problem. Will find out soon enough.

That went well. We both picked up the pace tonight a bit. I found a natural rhythm which unfortunately meant I left Mrs S behind so I kept on having to loop back around so I didn't leave her too much on her own.

The arch cramps only started to come back at the very end of the 2nd 5 minute run and were nowhere near as bad so hopefully I am doing something right.

Off to the hot tub in a bit to relax

Research on stretching is not conclusive in making any huge differences to recovery...but anecdotally I find it a great way to refocus, chill a bit & it is just plain pleasant to do rather than getting back home rushing about to get dinner/housework etc..an extra bit of me time at the end of the run. That said eat & drink as soon as is practical after a run to begin the recovery process & minimise soreness/dead legs next time, rehydrate, get some carbs with an amount of protein in, peanut butter sandwich with honey & a glass of water works for me.

Totally agree with this on stretching. Done badly it can be damaging as well. Whatever works for you but stretch gently, correctly (do the research) and don’t bounce! For the record, I never stretched and had a successful running career over 10-12 years. It was also the subject of my extended piece of work as part of my PGCE.

I’ve just started training again but I’m pretty sure I have peroneal tendonitis in one of my feet. Has anyone else managed to still train and get rid of it?

The things suggested on the interweb are rest, ice, and specific stretching exercises...so I guess training on it without diagnosis isn’t a good idea. Sports physio? Like all injuries that are persistent really. Your local running club will probably be able to point you somewhere, either on their website, or message board, or by contacting them by email.

Nice profile btw

Seriously though, well done!"

Cheeky!!

that's what my app says I'm on Week 7 on the 14 week programme and I've completed run 19 out of 42. Only a few more to go....

So far, each run has 5 walking gaps, but the walking bits appear to be between 3-5 seconds before you're off again!!!!

My silly shifts are back this weekend. So I really doubt I can get out as much as I want to just as I was improving as well!

It’s where the tendons in the side of your foot and just underneath are inflamed.

Much to the disgust of my dog I went for a 2 hour walk today before work. Not much I know but it's the 1st step in what's going to be the return of me being fit again. Add to that a hectic 12 hour shift and I'm happy enough. Even more so as I'd not planned starting till I was off next week.

Alarm went off at 6am so I could get up and go running.

I'm still in bed.

The intentions were there...

Missed yesterdays parkrun as I was feeling rough with a dodgy stomach on Friday night. Local 10km today, still not 100% but mpre than happy with 54 minutes.

Liverpool Rock n Roll marathon next week, can't wait!

I got up at 4am to run 15 miles at an obstacle course event yesterday. It was only supposed to be 13 but took a wrong turn along the way.

Planned a recovery run today, but that's just going to have to wait.

I have bought new running socks - that is my running efforts during the last week - couldn't get any running trousers though - they don't make them in that store for short legged people

I think next week will either go very well or very bad as I've not done any long runs since Brighton marathon 6 weeks ago. But after that it's a shit in focus with nothing other than 5 amd 10kms planned for the summer

I've been reliably told that it is good to not do any long runs if you have two marathons close together. It rests the legs.

No long runs, recovery is key, shorter sharper runs as you have been doing re more beneficial , you won't make much difference in the short time to your current level of fitness, but risk over reaching & injury if you keep running long..tempting as it may be. Good luck.
