I've read and heard a few assumptions made about people of 60 and over recently. Not just here in the general media too.

What were/are your assumptions about being that age? For those of you in your 60s were you surprised or does it pretty much live up to your expectations or fears? For those under, what are your assumptis, expectations and fears?

I used to think 60 was ancient. I also used to think 30 was old. (When I was a teenager!)

Depends on the person really. Some act older and some act younger.

I know a few sprightly 80 year olds so 60 seems pretty young really.

Yeah, I used to think 60 marked transition in to old age.

It seems to me (Mr) that the moment a zero appears on an age that it becomes another era, a new behaviour or attitude. It really should be seen it the round. The day you transfer from one decade to the next, in truth nothing changes, zero, the number that supposed change. There generally is nothing you cant do one day and not the next.

I remember being 16 and chap I was apprenticed too turning 37 ( my age now ) and thinking you old fart your almost dead. How dare you act like you do..

Now I’m the same age, I don’t feel mentally any different and still act and like what I like just as he did an I’m sure a 16 yr old thinks you old fart about me.... It’s just life, same as it’s a number

An I’m pretty sure at 60 that mindset will still be the same bar the body may sometimes say “are you kidding me “

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

As you know, OP, I'm planning to shuffle off at 60. I can change my mind when I get there (it's not that far off) but I don't want to deal with dementia. I'll go earlier if I am diagnosed.

On another thread I mentioned that my old yoga teacher is in her 70s and she's as flexible and on the ball as when I met her when she as my age. It depends on the person.

I'm doing some of them and I'm part of a dementia prevention trial but I don't think I can out-run genetics.

From 20 to 40 you’re young .

From 40 to 60 you’re middle aged .

From 60 onward you’re old .

Simple .

And I’ll be 57 in a week or so , so I’m almost old , and after a heart attack 3 months ago lucky to still be here .

I’ve spoken to many octogenarians who ask why they are still here , some have had enough , some still have dreams .

So with more and more people living way past 80 maybe the perceptions of what’s old should change . I dunno , but I feel a whole lot older this year than I did last year .

Exactly but I notice that assumptions and attitudes change when the number changes to 60. I wondered why and what people think.

Extreme old age isn't something I relish to be honest. I'm talking about late 80s on. From what I see unless you've maintained fitness and have escaped illness it's not a comfortable life. I'm doing what I can now to ensure as far as possible that I'm fit into very old age.

Sex is one of the things that lots of people assume stops when you get to 60, let alone 80.

So what are the things that people do in the hope of preventing dementia ?

My mum was obsessed with preventing it and had various obsessions that she took to extremes to try to prevent her getting it such as a healthy diet, exercise, watching (stupid) quizz programes etc to keep her brain active .... non of it worked as she has early onset alzheimers and to be honest her many obsessions she had to prevent dementia actually led us to realise she already had a form of dementia !

I definitely think with an increasingly ageing population that we are only limited by our physicality not our age.

There's plenty of older people capable of doing what lots of younger unfit people can't do.

Don't hope too much on that bus pass at 60...currently it is issued at 64 year olds here and I believe that is going up each year that will settle at around 67.

It may differ in your area.

I am doing more now than I did 10 years ago, more sport, gardening hobbies, bigger circle of friends both inside and outside the swinging world, and fully enjoying life. Plus semi retirement means the ability to meet during the day So the 60's are definitely not a worry to me.
