Could you be a minimalist?

Could you live life without all the modcon's? Without all the tech and basically crap you could do without. I'm currently living in a tent and I'm happy. I've been like it all my life. I've had flats full of shite and I've just up and moved away and left it all behind to start afresh somewhere new. I'm miserable when I'm in a flat with lots of possessions and feel stuck. Can't move on because I had all this stuff.. I hate it when possessions own you and not the other way around. I like the feeling of being about to just up and leave at the drop of a hat. I really am the most happy when i only have what I need. It got me thinking.. I think my ideal place in life would be to volunteer as a crisis rescuer. Go to disaster areas and help those who have been in an Earthquake, fire, tsunami etc... The thought of it feels right, and to those of you who saw the thread I put on the other day.. it's a chance to redeem the mistakes I've made in life. I love the idea of getting a call and flying off to help those in need. Live the basic life with basic things and be happy. Im looking for a flat at the moment and it scares me tbh...

Please listen to this...

That's not what I said... I'm saying the thought of getting a flat and filling it with shit scares me as I KNOW it don't make me happy. I've done it loads of times. The fact I'm in a tent now don't matter. I'm happy now, and I don't want to be in the position of going through all the crap of having a flat and getting shit I don't need or want. Be stuck here in a job I don't like.. for what? I'm saying, I'd like to volunteer now before I start wasting money on a place. I'm camping not homeless lol. And I'm not a bum, I keep clean, got cash in the bank and I don't beg...

I got nice clothes and I keep myself fit and tidy. If you seen me walking down the street you wouldn't think I was in a tent.. think of it like if you go camping, you don't fall to pieces and let yourself go do you.. I actually save money this way. And I'm enjoying it . It's the stigma of "homeless" that I don't get. My friends feel sorry for me and offer me things etc. I say, if I was in a flat you wouldn't offer me it. It's a horrible stigma, I don't drink or take drugs, I vape that's it. The only thing I ask from a certain friend is to charge my battery pack. I go a cafe for brekkie and charge my phone. Life's good at the moment and it's only when people say I'm homeless I feel pissed me off. I'm bloody camping mun... Get up go to gym with a change of clothes have a workout and shower. I got 2 duvets on the floor of the tent. 2 sleeping bags (1 inside the other). I sleep in my boxershorts I'm so warm. I got a riverfront view and it's really nice. It's not for everyone granted but it fits me down to the ground...

When i was a young man all my wordly possessions would fit in a VW Scirocco, handy because i used to move around alot.

30 years later having settled down and with a burgeoning family i'd struggle to fit it all in the Taj Mahal. Sometimes i miss the simpler days but i wouldn't change a thing and i'm not sure i'd want to go back. But if circumstances change who knows?

I am becoming less materialistic as I get older and am constantly trying to declutter... I like the idea of minimalist living, not sure if I will ever get there though (too many books)!

Why does a home have to be bricks and mortar. You're happy, you're taking care of yourself and you're not a burden on anyone. Well done you, take no notice of the detractors.

I have very few possessions and I never really stick around places too long to lay roots.

I don't really do tech other than things I need to work and my phone.

I reckon I could quite happily live a simple life. As long as I still had music and could spend time with loved ones.

It's brilliant.. I could carry everything I got (ok I got some stuff I'd never get rid of I'm my mum's attic, like my records!!) But I have everything I need here. I literally on the other side of the road to town. The gym is right opposite me. I have loads of friends in town who have hairdressing, tattoo, kebab, retail, wedding, phone and so on shops. I can go see friends whenever and they know now not to keep on about my situation. They know I'm happy and that's it. My mates doing me a free tattoo soon, but that's not because of my situation it's because he's a mate. I actually treat my friends more than they treat me, buying them tea and food from Gregg's etc. That's the type of person I am.

Why not compromise and live in a static caravan. An upgrade from a tent but not as materialistic as a flat.

My ex used to keep stuff for the sake of it. It bugged me when she has closet's and draws full of clothes but she still hasn't anything to wear!? But I'm sure most women are like that. She said she can't be seen in a picture on Facebook in the same things more than once in a year.. now that's another thing I hate.. Facebook! But that's another thread discussion!

The word "static" is really scary lol. Campervan would be nice, but if I volunteer I can't take it with me. I'm still in the thought process at the minute, but I know what I feel I want...

Your mates sound brilliant.

Can you ask around for volunteering opportunities? I know people that have gone and worked abroad but don't know full details sorry.

I hate camping and can't even do it for a holiday. Glad you're happy.

I think it's great what you're doing. Especially as it seems like second nature for you. I've just got too much crap accumulating in my home that it's a battle to find time to get down to basics. I'm not a materialistic person and don't buy lots of things.. I'm not even sure where all the stuff comes from. Papers and packaging .. The bane of my life. I think I need to keep everything that can't be recycled in case I find a use for it one day that will stop it going into land fill. It's a stress. I'd love to minimise and simplify my life but don't have the time to do it!

Much respect to you.. Hope you make it to join crisis teams one day. I remember once chatting to a homeless guy who told me he often went out to live in the wilderness of Scotland just camping out. I was in awe. You guys are true survivors...I wouldn't last a day without heating and bought food!! I thought he could easily run training workshops teaching people how to survive if the structures of our society ever broke down and left us to fend for ourselves. You know we are only as civilised as long as those processes upon which our society relies are functioning. You only have to look at the chaos that ensues when delivery trucks don't make it to Asda for a few days to prove it!

Think we could all do with being a little more self sufficient and less dependent on authorities controlling everything. Good luck OP
