Speak to cab or one of the many debt help charitys

Like cap

They can really help

Also bancrupcy may not be your best option if its under 15k you can apply for a debt relief order but best get advise from proffesionals not fabbers mate

Good luck

I think you need to tell us a little bit more about your circumstances. Is it personal or your business? How much do you owe and to whom? What assets do you own? Are you being threatened with bankruptcy, or thinking about applying yourself?

Once you are declared bankrupt I believe that lasts for 6 years. During that time difficult to get credit etc.

Like others have said speak to CAB or another debt counselling service. You may still have other options.

I don't think he needs to tell us his personal financial circumstances. He needs to contact an organisation that will confidentially advise him.

Then there is no point in him asking here. I need some basic information to be able to advise.

About 13 years ago, I was really struggling with my debt... I was in about £12-13k worth of credit card debt, and ot was spiralling, due to my party lifestyle (just alcohol and shopping)

As soon as I contacted CCCS (Now StepChange) my life completely changed

They contacted all my debtors, stopped them from contacting me, negotiated zero interest on the remainder of my debts, and calculated an affordable amount for me to pay each month, which I paid to them, and they distributed to my debtors...

It may sound so simple, but the fact that I no longer had to think about my debts anymore, made the whoke process very liberating...

Not worrying about your debts allows you to focus on more positive things... and helps you to lead a more happy life

In a couple of years, I’d managed to pay almost all of it off... and now my only debt is a £300 credit card that I got last year

Do not be offensive. I did not ask for those. And the CAB can be terrible. They are volunteers with some training. It depends who you see there.

But how much did CCCS charge you for that service?

It is a very murky world. Companies have very vested interest in getting people singed up to IVA's and bankruptcy's when they needn't do so. It is quite a target driven environment so gain independent advice.

If you do go ahead and repay what you signed up to, you will always have the debt with your bank, even if it not shown on your credit score. Depending how watertight the agreement is, creditors will peruse you for monies you may owe them. Opening accounts after completion may be difficult too.

You need to ask a lot of questions and think about all options.

It’s a charity mate... so not charge at all

Bains & Ernst were charging an extra £20 a month on top... this was zero

Hope that helps

CCCS, consumer credit counselling service, now called StepChange are a charity. It's free, it's a free phone number cos the calls can last up to an hour. They'll send you everything you need and go through your income and expenditure.

I used them just over a year ago when my ex stopped paying me maintenance and my financial circumstances changed. They were great

It's a relatively easy process but you need to find the money to fund it which is approaching a grand. The official receiver will potentially take a significant chunk of your disposable income until you are discharged which us usually 1-2 years. Until it is discharged you ate ineligible fir credit. Once it's discharged you will still struggle to get credit but whatever route you go down if you have a level of debt where bankruptcy is an option your credit is going to be fucked for abyway. You need to consider whethe it will impact on your career depending on what you do for a living.

Finally avoid taking advice from a firm that charges a fee, they will potentially offer what suits them, not you.
