Where do you put your pets when you go on holiday. Kennels?,do friends help out?

The reason I'm asking is Mark's sister has 2 German Shepherds both very placid and friendly dogs but she put them in kennels 2 weeks ago when she was away, and now Trev has turned really nasty and timid, sort of on edge all the time , very weary of strangers.

Anyone else had similar. Cheers Ali

I’d never use kennels.

I have family, friends or neighbours that look after mine.

I’d use someone who advertised that they are a doggy day care kind of thing too.

Aww such a shame about the boy. Hopefully he will snap out of it soon.

The Kennels have a great reputation where she took them, and the other dog is fine , but sadly seems to have really upset him Thanks

Had he stayed there before?

Had they left him before?

Planet kitten, North East usually but occasionally South as well

Only ever left my dogs in kennels the once and would never do it again.

Cost almost as much as the holiday did, they looked really thin when we got them home and they seemed right out of sorts for a few days after.

No it was both dogs first time being left. The Kennenls keep in touch with you on social media throughout their stay , posting pictures of your dogs being walked, fed etc but it has really broke Trev. He is definitely not the dog he was before he went there.

I go for extended periods so leave my dog with family. I've used kennels in the past but only for short periods. Always felt guilty for some reason.

Such a shame I hope they didn’t treat him badly

Took about a week of them moping about before they got back to normal. They just looked sad if you know what I mean.

They just seemed listless and couldn't be bothered doing anything, even going for a walk took a bit of persuasion for a few days till they got back to normal.

Any family or close friends or neighbours could maybe have your pooch while you're away?

Try and get friends to look after my two but ideally would take them on holiday with me to the coast where we can walk on the beaches etc

Horse stays here and lucky to have people on the yard to help as iI do for them when they go away

Sorry but there is no way on earth I would put my dog in a kennels .... I would do a dog friendly holiday.... if you have to go get a dog sitter ... or a friend family member who could stay at your house .

I only have my sister left and she's too busy. I don't trust my neighbours . I may have to see if a good friend can stay at my place for a week so at least Pooch is in familiar surroundings. that's my main worry

I hope not too and she doesn't think they have, but might explain why he's like the way he is,the other dog is fine so its a puzzler

Same here. It takes my dog at least a week before he chills out again.

...Up on the Downs

Some of you will think this is mad, but humour me - before you go away look your animal in the eye and TELL THEM what you are doing as if they can understand English. Make sure they are listening. They can't understand the words - but they will understand that you told them something important, and it seems to help them cope.

Hope your dog will be ok.

He's probably confused and scared that you might leave him again if he's never been in kennels before. Just give him time to get used to a normal routine and indulge him a bit...

Says the guy who feeds his own dogs steaks lol.

I never put my dogs in kennels. It can spook them. They either go everywhere with me or I have a housesitter that comes and stays with them if I have to go away. So they stay home with someone they know. It's better for them but costs a lot.

Still I know they are safe well and in a place they are content. So the cost it's worth it.
