That's rubbish. Most university professors are highly educated but poorly paid compared with say someone who works for Pimlico Plumbers, who is far less educated, but far better paid.

A degree does not equal biget money.

I have 2, I earn very well but have mates who earn more legally with little or no qualifications.

Well I'm very sorry but you're wrong. Many people who don't go to university have incredibly successful lives, some people who go to university have crap lives.

Education doesn't dictate a persons success in life.

Success is also subject to different opinions. What is successful in one persons eyes may not be in anothers.

I totally agree and also what you said about university professors.

I admit education can help but it isn't everything. Uneducated builders that don't even know about the job they are doing give me astonishing quotes. Then sometimes I have to proceed and undo their bad job. I know some restaurant owners who are rolling in it despite being highly uneducated. They are business wise however.

I have a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish and a Masters in Biology. Have never used either.

I work at a low paid, wonderful, stress free job that I love. I have enough money, I'm happy.

Education is important, I agree, in getting you to learn to think in different ways.

As far as earning more, I don't think it's neccessariy true.

As long as you work for someone else you'll always have you earning capacity limited by someone else, degree or not.

Give me someone with common sense and no paper qualifications, over a Media Studies graduate any day (and I say this as someone who worked in Media)

Too much emphasis is placed on degrees (imo) these days, bring back proper vocational training, not everyone is cut out for academia!

To be honest, ‘being educated’ is hard work, it’s not a passive state where you sit idly by whilst some are and some aren’t. Thinking for yourself is commendable. Counts for nothing without an education - because then your thoughts are challenged.

A tradesman has a skill

People need tradesmen so why should someone who brings nothing to the table be entitled to earn more?

Don't see the logic but then don't get why people feel that a degree makes them a better person either?

This is bullshit! Some of the most moronic people I know are living lives of luxury with nice houses, cars, families, holidays every year, not a care in the world... meanwhile I have friends who stayed in education right up into their mid 20's with several qualifications just to end up working in a fish factory or stalking shelves in a supermarket. If all you want is to be successful then just go audition for reality tv and flash your titties, thats what makes you successful these days.

Education is important to make you aware of the wider world, cultures and to a point life.

It doesn’t raise you above your parents or your peers, unless you’re a prentious dong.

In one of today’s papers there is an article telling employers to ignore candidates for employment from Eton as they are not as educated or work as hard as someone from a comprehensive background.

Education is important but only in field you are going to work in. That doesn't necessarily mean a unique degree, as others have said it can be learning a trade instead. Basic maths and English is essential if you want to better yourself but that's all you need to go in whatever direction you want to. The great thing about our country is everyone is entitled to an education. If you didn't get a good education for whatever reason as a child there are places you can go to rectify the situation as an adult. If you got a good education and you want to further yourself then we have a scheme in place to allow you to pay for university in a way that won't cripple you for life. It's a personal choice whether you are educated or not just as its a personal choice what you do with it.

I work in primary schools (when I work lol) and one of the things we are trying to get through to our pupils at the moment is that you do not have to go to university to succeed. The world needs all sorts of people with all sorts of skills.

There's nothing mundane about wheeling and dealing. (To me, sitting in an office or being in a factory day after day, year after year would be mundane), It's a skill, not everyone has the aptitude for it.

I was asked to leave school 6 months before the exams and left with nothing. I persued a skill until I'd reached the highest level possible, now I have my own business, totally unrelated to those initial skills and, my fingers in lots of legal pies (to suggest the only way someone with no education can succeed financially is by breaking the law is naive and worrying) I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination but, I am financially secure. I've even picked up a few academic qualifications on my way.

Whether you have a high level of education or not, if you are intelligent and motivated, you have all the tools you need to succeed in life.

Don't waste time resenting other people for what they have. Find examples of "uneducated" people that have been "successful", be inspired and go for it

Nobody attacked you. People merely pointed out that your argument was incorrect. Financial security is not dependant on education such as university degrees.

Now advice on education being important is a good thing and if it had come across like that then it may not have sparked such a debate.

I went to a very good boarding school followed by a good university. Then my parents died and left me everything. My education has brought me no benefit but I've never needed it

I run a successful business mostly built on the contacts I made in boarding school. These are friends I made long before I qualified for anything.

As the old saying goes "it's not what you know that counts"

Sorry, OP. I'm going to have to disagree with your original post.

I know many post grads that are on the minimum wage and a fair few folk with no gcse, further or higher education qualifications that are (in one case in particular) very well off.

There's all sorts of factors to consider ranging from attitude, who you know or just plain luck!

This is only from my own perception and experience though.

"Sorry your wrong

I'm sorry, i have to disagree with you. You confuse intelligence with education. There are plenty of people in this world who, despite having only a basic level of education, have gone on to be great successes.

If you have intelligence, wit and ambition you can apply that regardless of your schooling.

Don't be sorry to disagree with him... he's talking absolute shit!

Plenty of highly educated rich people with mental health issues, it doesn't discriminate op

There are also plenty of highly educated people who are still as thick as shit. Intelligence comes in many forms and being intelligent and being educated are not one and the same."

Yes, I've met a few like that too!

I think although someone invited our opinions... he's not really interested!

Our second son left school at 16 against our wishes because he couldn't stand the system. He wanted to be his own man.

I had him working with me on a few building projects to give him a leg up and now he runs his own building firm and will most likely earn his first million by the time he's 40. He's managed this because he's ambitious, driven and above all remarkably intelligent and savvy. We are so proud of him.

The hugely ironic thing about people decrying the value of education is that they appear to be unable to understand basic statistics.

There's a clear correlation between levels of education and income. The fact of the existence Richard Branson and your mate down the pub who left school at 16 and was a billionaire by the time he was forty doesn't change that.

I'm guessing you wish you were better educated op?

I'm guessing you're serving in the forces rather than just being at the dressing up box?

The forces offer excellent opportunities for education, are you taking advantage of those opportunities?

"What a bunch of nasty horrible people"

What makes other people’s opinions nasty ? You put it out there and with some pretty rash comments .

People can better themselves through education. What you learn and the levels to which you learn are the tools .

How you use those tools are a totally different ball game . But it’s that game that enables or facilitates success .

I believe money doesn’t buy you happiness but you are a lot unhappier without it ..... education is a form of speculating

Plenty of evening courses, open university stuff like that.

I left school with nothing! I now have 7 O levels... don't need them, never used them. Just wanted to prove to myself that I could. It's possible if you want it.

I had him working with me on a few building projects to give him a leg up and now he runs his own building firm and will most likely earn his first million by the time he's 40. He's managed this because he's ambitious, driven and above all remarkably intelligent and savvy. We are so proud of him.

He also managed because you helped him like you just said....not everyone has that luxury"

You're suggesting that he wouldn't have done it without my help, thus belittling his achievements. This is not the case, i merely made the passage a little smoother for him.

The tone of your posts suggests to me that you're carrying a massive chip on your shoulder. You may want to put this aside if you want to avoid being 'attacked'.

"Sorry, OP. I'm going to have to disagree with your original post.

I know many post grads that are on the minimum wage and a fair few folk with no gcse, further or higher education qualifications that are (in one case in particular) very well off.

There's all sorts of factors to consider ranging from attitude, who you know or just plain luck!

Indeed. If you asked me if I'd prefer my kids to have "educated" interests with an average amount of money or being a bit thick with loads of money, it would be the former every time.

I know people who do amazing work for charities, where personal finances don't come into it whatsoever.

Perhaps you should take some time away from the forums and educate yourself a little on life. I don't mean that offensively, but the fact you seem to come across in this post that money is the driver behind absolutely everything in life, is somewhat concerning.

I don't have a degree but worked hard to pass my exams in financial services. I earned a lot of money with plenty opportunity to earn even more. I hated going to work. It was soul-destroying.

Now, I work for a charity. I earn a fraction of what I used to but I make a difference. I never dread going to work. I'm very poorly paid but I'm rich in job satisfaction. I consider myself successful.

I’ve got reasonable education...

But have never needed to use my certificates to get by in life...

I also don’t believe in the idea that we can live off something we did when we were in our 20’s...

I believe Education is ongoing...

I also know a few guys and girls who are millionaires, or not far off (clients and friends of mine)

And I definitely couldn’t say that they all got their success and wealth through being well educated... as most aren’t...

Either they’ve had it handed to them on a plate...

They’ve worked hard for it...

Or... They have stumbled across a money making idea that has served them well over time...

Some of them are literally high school dropouts, some are university educated... and then the rest fall in between all that

Education has very little to do with success or wealth

I have a mate who has 3 degrees (like the band) and is doing fuck all with his life...

He used to be a University Lecturer...

He’s a really nice guy, great to hang out with, really funny, but works in a kitchen, chopping veg and cleaning dishes... lives with his mum, he’s in his 50’s, had no money, no sex life, and is pretty annoyed that there are people who make more money than him, with less qualifications...

Unfortunately, he falls into that bracket of the population that assume an education is all you need to get by in life...

There is literally no substitute for hard work and determination...

No amount of Education, Talent, or Ability will guarantee you success...

But those who never give up, whether or not they have an Education, Talent or any Ability in their chosen field, are far more likely to succeed

I know a lot of people who have realised this at some point in their lives, and gone on to do extremely well because of it

Or, you could set up some kind of business or trust fund were the profit or interest funded good causes on a more regular and permanent basis giving them a more long term security. You need to start looking at the world in colour instead of black and white.

If you are waiting for dreams to come true, you might be waiting and wasting your life for a very long time.

There are plenty of opportunities out there for you to improve your education and, plenty of opportunities for you to improve your life financially, it's your choice, it's what you make of it! Don't waste your life resenting others and generalising about them.

Your talking about education like it's just handed to you....you talk about hard work education's fucking hard work and so it should be"

I’m actually talking about people who sit in their Ivory Towers and say, “I’ve got an Education”

Education does take hard work, but for most people, that ends when they’re 18-26

What happens then? You can’t live off a certificate for the rest of your life... I’ve tried it

The real work happens when you have to live in the real world...

I wake up every morning and feel thankful that I don’t have to get up and put a suit on anymore, to go and sit in an office and work all day, everyday to make someone else rich...

I’m now glad that I stopped thinking I was amazing because I passed a few exams when I was a youngster, and actually knuckled down and stopped relying the world to do me favours...

Never will I ever brag about being educated...

Because those people who know, will laugh to themselves inside, and say... “One day he will understand”

"Education is not just about making money ... it's the ability to understand our world, relate to eachother peacefully, to be creative, and so much more ...

It's nice to believe but in capitalism everything's about money....im not saying I'm a fucking Marxist but I see this world for what it is

I can't agree that unless you have money you are nothing ... there are many educated people in low/no paid work doing amazing things which is highly respected and valued by society ...

Like who?

There's a little project for you ...

you don't know any then?

I know people who do amazing work for charities, where personal finances don't come into it whatsoever.

Perhaps you should take some time away from the forums and educate yourself a little on life. I don't mean that offensively, but the fact you seem to come across in this post that money is the driver behind absolutely everything in life, is somewhat concerning.

If I won the lottery I'd give loads to good courses because I would see it as a miracle from god

Well you've certainly just generalised me"

No, I've read this whole thread and have been taking part in it all day. Your answers to all the posts have painted a picture and given an impression of the sort of person you are. If you are not that person, you only have yourself to blame, your the one doing the painting.

Throughout the thread, you have given the impression that you resent people with an education, you can't earn good money without a good education and, without money, you've got fuck all. You make sweeping statements about mental health and happiness and huge assumptions about the amount of help people have received or given to family.

In your last post you said if you won the lottery, you would give loads to good causes! The likelihood of that is slim, you and the charities could be waiting a long time.

People have put a lot of effort into communicating and interacting with you and you have given very little back, apart from short glib one word and one line answers that have painted a picture about you. Remember, we don't know you so we can only judge your character by the responses you give.

When you peep through people's Windows it's easy to assume they have had all the advantages in life but, when you get to know them, it's not always the case. Reading people's autobiographies would give you a better insight to this. Yes, some have had all the breaks, others have had it incredibly tough. I not generalising about you, just trying to read the picture you're painting.

Those are two good examples of where education is essential, but they obviously only represents a small proportion of society, so I wouldn’t have used that as an example to justify your argument... as most people are not in that type of profession...

You’ll get it, and it will all click one day...

Although, for some people, it never does

Hard work, determination and the right attitude are far more important"

No the right last name is far more important...

I have seen many middle eastern and Chinese children get great jobs in the USA because companies want inroads to China and the Middle East...

The problem with this tactic is that we’re still relying on pieces of paper to get us where we want to be...

I’m gonna stick with hard work and determination, as it’s working really well at the moment...

"I went to a very good boarding school followed by a good university. Then my parents died and left me everything. My education has brought me no benefit but I've never needed it

I run a successful business mostly built on the contacts I made in boarding school. These are friends I made long before I qualified for anything.

As the old saying goes "it's not what you know that counts"

So you just came out the womb knowing maths and English?"

I came out of the womb with a recently completed Times crossword (my Mum had a craving for newspapers and after eight mints. I know....don't ask). And it's been downhill ever since.
