I need to stop eating so much crap and do more exercise. When you find some willpower, please will you let me know your secret?

"I need to quit.

Help!! "

Eleven weeks ago I was rushed into hospital after a heart attack . My left artery was 100% blocked . I had stents put in , and am now on six meds and return next week to see the consultant to see whether I need more surgery .

Being vegetarian and very aware of a healthy diet , it was something of a shock . But when they asked how long I’d been smoking for , I realised the damage it had done . My heart attack was definately due to smoking for 35 years .

Need less to say , I haven’t smoked since it happened .

Same here. Tried most things but hasn't worked.

Hoping to quit with champix.

Doing it for myself, not because people won't meet me. Couldn't give a monkeys what others think!

Well done for giving up and I hope you make a speedy recovery.

I gave up through sheer willpower but obviously thats not for everyone..

I believe it depends on whether you have an addictive personality or not

Will power is the answer but to help I think not being bored is important. When I was losing weight I found that was the biggest hurdle to overcome.

I lost 5 stone but the smoking thing will be more difficult.

The comment regarding meets was just a tongue in cheek stab at humour. Guess I'm not as amusing as I thought...

Ouch to the Heart attack!! It does worry me, but I thoroughly love smoking. It's my only vice.

Tried patches and an inhalator.

I may decide I'm ready to try again soon.

I would def give vaping a go, totally different from inhalator etc.

I've never found one that's close to the "Hit" you get from smoking without making me cough.

I quit last year but keep falling off the wagon so to speak.

Hadn't had a cigarette since Thursday last week but had a bad day yesterday and bought a packet

I'll try again next week

I'm starting on champix from 01/05 too.

For MY benefit, not for anyone else's... my lungs are fucked enough now, COPD is no fun!

I can't reverse the damage, but I CAN slow it down a bit.

Good luck in your stopping

That's where you're going wrong! You need to be commited to giving up, not just try!

I did it with shear will power and successed for 8 years. Stupidity made me start again!! Don't seem to be in the right state of mind at the moment but have to do it.

Smoking is habit based and by looking at ur habits you can break it. The addiction is actually very weak compared to the habit (nicotine is out ur body 36 to 48 hours. Day 4 to 7 will be some drug craving getting easier as the days progress).

Habit is as easy or as hard as u make it.

In any one day there is normally only a small handful of important cigarettes. The rest are smoked because they are there.

For example first fag in the morning, one after meals or at breaks at work, one before bed tend to be the ones we desire the most.

Triggers tend to be boredom, stress, tea/coffee, alcohol, other people we usually smoke with, food.

Work out ur triggers and put alternatives in place... with coffee for example, do a crossword. A new habit builds a new association.

Habits are usually broken by 10 to 12 weeks.

All very true. It's a truly psychological mission.

Behaviour alteration is key.

Or u change nothing and struggle. When I stopped I swapped most of the tea in my routine to herbal or fruit teas. I went easy on the alcohol and did activities where I couldn't smoke... going swimming, going to the gym, the cinema.

After meals I cleaned my teeth...a great way to restore the colour and remove staining and I had a 2 do list so if I was bored I had jobs listed. Normally if u distract urself a craving dies off pretty quickly.

I'm so disorganised. I live life at the last moment.

I need to employ someone to do that for me.
