Super pleased with myself. 40 miles done today (although I did have a rather lengthy pit stop to volunteer at parkrun)

total miles since Sunday 108!

Now I've just got to it all in one day

Having done little more than use the watt bike on the gym all year the sunshine has seen me out twice this week! Bit of a shock to the system particularly after a marathon on sunday but not as unfit as I feared.

Need to get sone fitness before my tri in august otherwise I'm going to look like I've all the gear and no idea on the bike leg!

If you take it steady and up the milage steadily you'll be surprised how well you adapt.

Very soon 90 will seem well in sight.

In other news I planned a 50 miler today but bad preparation has left my waterproof stuff in the washing machine and it's tipping down. Parkrun and turbo time it is then.

Take spares and repair them at home when I run out of good tubes, unless I am running tubular tyres. There is no way on earth I will unlock the stitches, patch the tube up and reset the tyre. I just buy new ones.

34 miles that's a third of ride London right there. Rest will be easy trust me. The crowds, the buildings, the knobs with too much money, more crowds and the finishers medal.

Plus if it makes you feel better in traveled a long way to race and punctured 2 miles in. But I was amazing for 4 mins

Make sure the tyres are pumped up good and hard before every ride, it really does help. Mine are usually at 100-110 psi - easy with a track pump.

You may know saintbury and Stanway then? They are what made me cry on Sunday and I had to walk up a fair bit of them!

How do I get stronger for hills? sorry but only one way ride them.i pick a spot on hill and don't give up till I reach it.next time try and beat that marker.till one day I ride the whole climb "

That's pretty much what I figured luckily one of the killer hills from su day isn't too far from where I work so will go out after work and keep trying

"Well I went out to do 50 miles...managed 37.5. Feel. A bit gutted but its better than nothing I guess. Just felt so cold and wet and tired and emotional.

Plus I keep getting punctures!

Make sure the tyres are pumped up good and hard before every ride, it really does help. Mine are usually at 100-110 psi - easy with a track pump.

No Hill so steep you can't walk honest.

And if you want to get stronger for the hill - do hills.

That's the simple answer. There are specific workouts you could do but I'd say just go out, ride, enjoy it and don't get upset if you have to walk a bit x

Dead easy to create routes save as GPX files and then load to the garment. "

Best one I've used is ridewithgps, tcx files are much better, especially for garmin.

37.5 is a good ride out.. better than my day spent in the classroom teaching.

Punctures - check outhe Spez Armadillos or conti gaterskins. "

Gatorskins are shit, no grip!

I've tried every winter going and Vittoria rubino g+ endurance or pro control are by far the best, even good in soft snow and ice. Plus still have same rear tyre after 7000km.

Currently trying out pzero velo as a summer tyre, too replace Vittoria cosra g+ speed, been good but Flint is still an arse. So far very impressed, no Flint, no picking imbedded Flint out of tyres, it's just a matter of how long they last.

If any of you start getting constant punctures, it's either worn tyre or your pinching your tubes. If you're running 25mm tyres, psi is weight dependent e.g 80kg rider needs 90psi rear 80psi front.

I've been very taken with Schwalbe tyres; the Marathons are bombproof and they have a pretty good range balancing invulnerability and performance to your preferred trade-off.

I always use Gp4000’s 25mm at 100/110 psi (I’m 80kg) with no trouble, only get punctures when there are very worn.

I prefer wolves tubular tyres or Hutchinson 20mm tyres, pumped up to max I never get puncture. I have to say though I wouldn't repair a tubular tyre, I never mastered stitching the tyre back together.

I drank loads but, and this is odd for me, when I got to the food stop I didn't want to eat! Never happened in my life ever! I forces a cheese and tomato sandwich down because I knew I had to eat.

Also had a couple of gels on the ride. Its just the damn hills, my legs die as soon as I see them!

In that case it’s just a matter of doing hill repeats and practice. Try cycling in Devon, there’s not many flat places here, but it makes you stronger.

That is also a bit of state of mind, when I was racing I used to speed up without realising it when I got near a hill.

Find a route with a few taxing hills, do the route a few times a week. Give it a few months and you will climb the hills, up to you if you start going up the gears once you are used to the hills.

I did this and managed to get up billinge lump in a mad 53x15, sat down all the way up the hill.

I am having many doubts about RideLondon. Can't seem to get a coherent message in how hilly it is and have only done 52 miles in training.

Also can't seem to get a definitive on how long I have to do it. The bumpf all says 8:30 hours yet on the times from marg year there were people taking 10 hours.

Not sure if its worth deferring the place to next year and spend a year properly training and losing weight (to help me up the hills lll also don't want to be the fattest one there!).

There are it 5 weeks left and I am away for a couple so wong be able to train on those.

Have a look on the ride london website. It should have a route plan somewhere, this should also give the profile of the route. I believe it takes in the iconic box hill, this can be quite a climb if you are not used to it.

I think I'm deferring..... My last 2 rides of 64 miles have been disasters and I cried both times. I want to enjoy doing it and I won't as I feel right now.

When I dud the marathon there was no doubt in my mind that I'd do it but my head is just not there with this one.

I'm going to join a local cycle club, do some ausax's and sportives etc and simply become as obsessed with cycling as I dud running.

I massively underestimated the training needed for this. My fuelling and drinking etc have not been great which is why I struggled so much.

I've got myself a fancy garmin edge touring computer thingy to help plan routes. Just don't want to get to this time next year and be in the same situation!

I'm still going to go down and watch it though.

Jouning a club was the best thing I did.

Having gone from just commuting to work 7 miles each way, I was very quickly doing 50/60 mile rides comfortably.

The club I joined said they have a minimum speed but despite this they have been really welcoming of folk new to cycling and unable to do the stated pace.

They tend to split up into smaller groups to suit everyone's ability

I realise not all clubs are like this.

A lot of local clubs have the minimum speed thing...which is why people drop out and go solo or with a buddy instead....then the club's moan that numbers are falling...

I have been in a few clubs before I took up running......find one that caters for the steadiest in the group. Big bug bear of mine in both running and cycle clubs.

Club rides / runs are a social thing in general and therefore should run in decent sized groups catering for the steadiest there, else clubs die a death. I've paid my membership fees and ended up cycling alone what's the point.

Just back to cycling and have entered a Sportif for the second time (first one was cancelled due to weather) and I'm papping myself....

That’s the majority, but I’m not into that, I ride cause it’s like meditation and I get to see parts of the country I’d never see otherwise. It’s like traveling without moving, the French call it souplesse, it’s a good feeling.

That’s the majority, but I’m not into that, I ride cause it’s like meditation and I get to see parts of the country I’d never see otherwise. It’s like traveling without moving, the French call it souplesse, it’s a good feeling. "

Very true

Good luck to anyone going cyclone bashing today, and to all you southerners tune into the national road race on ITV tomorrow and see the kind of roads us Northumbrians get to call home as the World Tour boys and the rest get to take on the Ryals...

Basically roadies only wave to other roadies. Mtb riders for instance seem not worthy of acknowledgment in my experience as both.

I agree, I’m a roadie and mtb, but mainly a roadie and there definitely is a snobbery there that pisses me off, some roadies only acknowledge other roadies with all the gear. I make a conscience effort to acknowledge anyone on the road. I belonged to a club and the further up the groups I went the more cliquey it got and couldn’t be arsed to make an effort.

I used to ride more on road than off. But Its not worth the risk on today's roads.

There's a lot of rubbish talked about this roadies versus MTBers stuff. Yes, a lot of roadies tend to only wave to people they know, or from clubs they know. That's no different to anyone else - if you don't believe me try walking to town waving or saying hello to everyone you meet....

There are assumptions made too - if I'm out in the wilds and I see someone on an MTB I'm gonna assume they're either bonkers or a local going to the village shop, because no-one in their right mind is going to go up into the cheviots or the pennines on half a ton of mild steel with bouncy forks and a rear shock absorber that turns all your effort into up and down bouncing.

ANd yes, some road clubs can be cliquey, right up to the oens where you can only join by invitation, but if you end up in the wrong club, change. Find a club that has a B and C run, or a no drop policy - they're out there if you look.

"Just to clarify.... I've attempted 64 miles twice and failed.... One I dropped out at 34 miles, one I changed the route and did 52 miles. "
WHat's causing you to bail out?

If it's energy, then getting the food and drink right is the key (eat before you're hungry and drink before you're thirsty are the best rules I can give you). If it's specific pain, think about a bike fit, and maybe a session with someone to look at your technique.

I don’t believe I spoke any rubbish, just what I’ve experienced. Thanks for the sage advice though, the club I belong to has A, B, C, D, E, F runs plus a social group and a breeze group for women. The A group being semi pros and former pros, from well known teams, most are cool though. I race and time trial, but I don’t buy into the velominati bullshit though.

Nope. Roadies wave to roadies. This is a fact. Cyclists wave to anyone. I count myself as a cyclist. I also ride/have ridden 4 disciplines only one of which is predominantly full of snobs. Also only one of which has made cyclists "fair game" to motorists. Strava doesn't help. I believe roadies worry more about KOM's than they do other road users and traffic signals.

Did a roadie break your heart, you sound bitter and angry about them or did you recently lose a KOM to one and it cuts deep ?

Do you think mtb riders are looked down upon because they ride for fun? You know, not really taking it seriously enough... Not worrying if they're pushing out enough watts or not for example.

"Jouning a club was the best thing I did.

Having gone from just commuting to work 7 miles each way, I was very quickly doing 50/60 mile rides comfortably.

It's so much better riding with company and having a bit of craic

There will be someone to help you along, or take the piss when needed.

Shame some clubs have a minimum average speed on thier social rides.

The club I joined said they have a minimum speed but despite this they have been really welcoming of folk new to cycling and unable to do the stated pace.

They tend to split up into smaller groups to suit everyone's ability

I realise not all clubs are like this.

I should really get in touch with a club while I'm here in England "

The cycling club I first joined had 2 groups, the fast boys and the family men with short time scales. No one cared about speed limits at all.

The local club has stated average speed of 14 mph, you have to do 3 social rides with them. That puts me off a little, as stated how does a club grow without new members.

Not much pressure then lol.

You will be fine, don't try and race others. Just go out and enjoy the ride, forget about the big hills lol.

Me old Claud Butler is rusting away, shame. Back in the day people were polite regardless of walking, cycling or driving.

The fun is in the optimistic spirit of being out cycling in the great British countryside.

Not the negativity that exists.

Smile and be a cheerful person.

I bought a Folding bike last week in the hope to get fit and healthy again. I cycled 8 miles yesterday after a 15 years break. Ok it wasn’t really a break, it was more like being lazy. Ok back to the 8 miles run. I’m in so much pain and agony. I suppose it will be less painful after each future ride.

Pray for my speedy recovery, my legs and bottom hurt. In another persons point of view it would seem as though I was involved in brutal anal sex. lol
