"I never done anything when u live on a estate in Tottenham police don't care Is this something to do with the clampdown on knife and gun crime. Wasn't Tottenham one of the areas where they said they were going to step up stop and search." Stop and question: police powers A police officer might stop you and ask: what your name is what you’re doing in the area where you’re going You don’t have to stop or answer any questions. If you don’t and there’s no other reason to suspect you, then this alone can’t be used as a reason to search or arrest you. Stop and search: police powers A police officer has powers to stop and search you if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re carrying: illegal drugs a weapon stolen property something which could be used to commit a crime, such as a crowbar You can only be stopped and searched without reasonable grounds if it has been approved by a senior police officer. This can happen if it is suspected that: serious violence could take place you’re carrying a weapon or have used one you’re in a specific location or area Before you’re searched Before you’re searched the police officer must tell you: their name and police station what they expect to find, for example drugs the reason they want to search you, for example if it looks like you’re hiding something why they are legally allowed to search you that you can have a record of the search and if this isn’t possible at the time, how you can get a copy Removing clothing: police powers A police officer can ask you to take off your coat, jacket or gloves. The police might ask you to take off other clothes and anything you’re wearing for religious reasons - for example a veil or turban. If they do, they must take you somewhere out of public view. If the officer wants to remove more than a jacket and gloves they must be the same sex as you. If they haven’t fulfilled this then IPc complaint. Whilst I respect what the police do they have to do it within the law

Please tell me that no one really thinks like this.Otherwise what chance would anyone ever have of a fair trial?" Not at all. The police will arrest people for a variety of reasons, a lot are not guilty. I'd rather people were arrested & released uncharged than let a potential criminal go free. I think most people have responded in reaction to how the OP has come accross & presented himself

If you have these in your possession you should be picked up for it. If you don't you'll benefit from a safer environment and eventually the need to stop and search people will diminish, just allow extra time for your journey. The issue is there are not enough police. It might be good if the OP gave us a bit more detail but it just doesn't seem fair to assume that he was doing anything wrong. Even an innocent person could handle the situation badly.

Au contrare, I work in an environment of regular searches, scrutinisation and random drug checks, I accept these as they serve a purpose. In fact regular contact would enable a rapport to build and the process becomes easier.

"The OP has been injured. We don’t know how. It may have been a case of deliberate police brutality. It may have been a paper cut from a £10 note given back to him by the officer after being dropped. My advice is: if nabbed by the feds, just say “wernt me, guv” " Once you've been read you're rights you're invited to say something. Whatever you say, the 5-0 have to write it down for future evodense. At this point it's best to say "ow officer, stop hitting me".

I have friends who have been out for a run, in full running gear and they’ve been stopped and searched. Oh, and they’re black. " One of my friends was stopped late at night in East London near his house, he was stopped and searched. He was dressed in smart casual clothing. He said the police were very polite and respectful, he was left to go on his way... Oh, and he's black... But like everything there is far more to this story but it wouldn't make such good reading...

"I personally think that if the police could stop and search people at there will for no reason, there would obviously be a lot less crime committed with weapons and a lot less of the scourge of society which is narcotics on the streets. If you have these in your possession you should be picked up for it. If you don't you'll benefit from a safer environment and eventually the need to stop and search people will diminish, just allow extra time for your journey. The issue is there are not enough police. Until it keeps happening you, time and time again. Then I think you'd have a different view. If it kept happening to me time and time again I'd have a look at the common denominator and change my actions, behaviours and company accordingly. No one is stopped for no reason. They are. " No one is stopped for no reason." In what kind of fantasy world do you live in?

" No one is stopped for no reason. In what kind of fantasy world do you live in?" No-one is stopped without a reason. There is always a reason, no matter how flimsy it may seem to the person being stopped. But you can catch people wanted for other crimes because they committed a minor traffic offence.

My dad was a respectable middle aged guy, driving me and my bf at the time to the station early one morning. Not doing anything illegal, not speeding or driving in any kind of way that would warrant suspicion. He was followed, flashed and pulled over by the police with us in the car. When he asked why, they told hm they thought he was an illegal taxi. Bollocks. They pulled him over because he was black. My dad was polite and answered their questions. They eventually begrudgingly sent us on our way. It was an eye opener for my white bf and pretty humiliating for my dad. Doubt that would have happened to a middle aged white guy driving his kid to the station.

" Not alone. Was out with a mate in North London many moons ago, scruffy students and was stopped and searched by couple coppers. We are both white. I'll be honest and say they were polite. On flip side was on way home late one evening standing on tube platform (having previously stopped for a few beers) when some nutter decided he wanted to fight. Hadn't seen or spoken to the guy before he just proceeded to push and goad me and tbh after 5 or so minutes I was getting mighty close to the point or reacting, when a guy came dashing down the platform, slammed the guy into the wall and proceeded to read this guy the riot act. Turned out to be off duty copper who'd seen what was going down. Do one justify the other ... not sure. Do I feel aggrieved. Not at all. But then I've only been subject to stop and search a couple of times in 30 years. If was once a month it would be very different.

IF (note the emphasis on IF) the person being stopped turns out to have outstanding warrants, then the officer needs to be able to justify stopping the person in court. All very well saying "change your behaviour and you won't get stopped"...bit difficult to change the colour of your skin.

You beat me to it. I think what irks most people is how flimsy the reason is...... Nonetheless, its still a reason.

But how were you positioned in the car? And how bored was the policeman? I have my son and his girlfriend a lift once and got stopped, for the same reason. But they were going out, so we're dressed up, I wasn't so didn't match. Also they both sat in the back... quite easy to see why they thought I may be an illegal cab.
