Do some people take over certain threads?

I’ve noticed on some threads, it’s turned into two people just having a heated debate.

Others you can tell they know each other, so they all seem to quote and reply to each other. Everyone else ends up not contributing as it’s like a love in, but they seem to have to do it publicly and not by PM. You feel like saying, just get a room !

It’s much better than it used to be. A lot of people have met socially, and so there are a lot of groups formed. The debate part, I know I’m guilty of, but it’s a forum and people are going to debate

I'd agree, there are some people who seem intent on making digs at each other.

I think with the other example it's not always intentional, if someone replies to you it's hard not to reply back, that's how conversation works afterall.

I guess it's how you view the purpose of the forums. Are they here purely to discuss the OP or are they here to encourage conversation which as we all know can often go off topic?

I see the forum as a room full of people socialising. If someone says lots of things that 'click' with you, you are to respond more to that person. Just natural conversation, nothing more, nothing less. I think some people just feel left out, and turn arsey.

If someone is out of your filters, you cannot pm them, or you just don't want to and keep it to a little bit of fun in the forum.

I get what your trying to say op, there is a them and us in a lot of threads, and not just on here, also in the work place, the pub. It’s going to happen where people get to know others better than the strangers they don’t yet know.

Yeah there are some 'circles' on here for sure. I guess you will always get that but when they blindly back each other up its a bit annoying!

The best thing to do is reply regardless of who else is on the thread.

It's clear sometimes that people only respond to those they find attractive or who agree with them.. It's human nature and the only way to be included is to join in

People go off topic in the debate/discussion - they will support a certain view point /person - lots enjoy the exchange of ideas / opinions - these threads are very organic they are not a meeting.

.... a facilitator will bring them back on topic..., usually an OP will do this if they are involved in the forum - some going off topic have been hilarious

Honestly it's pretty much the same handful of people that constantly post inflammatory remarks. I don't know why admins don't hand out permanent bans for the forums more often. There some people who literally offer nothing to the forums other than insulting comments and comments specifically designed to get a rise out of people

I often think 'why not just take it to pm and flirt there' but at the end of the day its a public forum and anyone can post whatever they like (as long as they don't break any rules that is)….

IMHO its boring to read tho

It probably comes as no surprise to you that i've had a few heated debates on here, both on my own and other peoples' posts.

It doesn't bother me at all, i actually enjoy debating opinions, there is such a wonderful and diverse set on here bouncing different opinions around is part of the fabric of life.

It's when people begin making incorrect assumptions about your character and then start slinging personal insults as a result that i get annoyed. This is when it stops being a debate.

This is one of the reasons why I stopped joining in the forums as much as I used to. As much as it's true that this is an open forum and you're always going to get this sort of thing going on, it just gets really boring seeing this stuff after a while, the same handful of people sabotaging a thread to talk absolute rammel. A bit of flirting here and there is fine but if you want to talk to someone that much then just take it to PM. For example there'll be an interesting thread running on the role wombats play in a post-modern society, and then you'll get this shite...

Person A : Oh hello, how are you? I haven't seen you in a while

Person B : I'm fine thanks, nice arse btw!

Person A : Hee hee, cheeky! Fancy a cuppa?

Person B : Don't mind if I do. Milk and two sugars.

Person A : You want some cake too?

Person B : Yes please

Person A : What you been up to then?

Person B : Well, I've just got in from Tesco. Did you know they're selling Jaffa cakes at half price?

Person A : Get away! I prefer a Hobnob myself.

Person B :

I like seeing the interaction of others it’s entertaining. This is usually referred to as the ‘clique’. The forum is incredibly dull without friendships and ppl bouncing off each other. There are debates which I enjoy, especially those that are respectful. You may not agree with someone but that doesn’t mean either argument is right or more valid than another. The moral high ground is often a stance taken, I prefer a reasoned discussion. You get to understand how someone has reached their viewpoint and this can change your own.

You also get forum users who start 10 threads a day. This is another complaint of some but they won’t start a thread of their own. Someone has to start threads otherwise there’d be no forum. The forum is definitely a case of the more you put in the more you get out.

In summation, be careful what you wish for, these folk you find annoying keep the forum alive. You may not appreciate every thread they start or comment they post but they make the effort. As in the real world you won’t like everyone on the forum and vice versa

Surely people can use this site however they wish though? They aren't actually hurting anyone. If people don't like what is being said then it's very quick and simple to scroll on past or view another thread.

I just join in threads for the fun of it. I've been slated for posts, people have laughed at my posts, people have responded to my post, people have completely ignored my posts. But I'm not bothered, it's a free country, and I've paid for fabs, so if I want to join in threads I will, regardless. If people get friendly with others then that's good, that surely is the aim of the site.

Play nicely now people, have fun, and let's all chat ....mwahhhh

Sometimes it happens a bit but the other option is where it's a love-in between two, where someone is trying to get a shag out of a discussion. They'd be wiser to take it off-thread but the forum topics are open to anything within site rules.

Yes!!!! "

Or just post anyway referring to the original OP and throw a gooseberry into the works. That's what I tend to do anyway.

The best one I had is my thread when I returned to see what I’d missed. Someone commented and welcomed two other forum users back and not me. That cut deep

"I'd agree, there are some people who seem intent on making digs at each other.

I think with the other example it's not always intentional, if someone replies to you it's hard not to reply back, that's how conversation works afterall.

I guess it's how you view the purpose of the forums. Are they here purely to discuss the OP or are they here to encourage conversation which as we all know can often go off topic?

Do t those threads get closed? When they go off topic?

Threads only get closed if they break forum rules. "

And when they reach the maximum numbers of comments the thread can take ...

The irish forums have been decimated over the last year because of trolling and 'regular' posting..

.personally i think more policing and limit peoples activity instead of the useless 1/2 day ban...make them put more thought into their posts and comments...

Limit people’s activity? This strikes me as a bit pedantic. There’s absolutely nothing stopping people starting a thread or saying hi! We were all new once.

South Wales

I've given up on this forum these days. I only drop by occasionally to check updates on socials.

However, this thread caught my attention.

As somebody who in a previous life has been professionally involved in this whole forum malarky (helping to plan and manage them for various publishers) my experience is that you will always see the cliques try to dominate the forum space, and they tend to use the same tactics to get the same rewards.

The clique members invariably need to be defined in public (in my opinion) and thrive on the exclusivity of belonging to their gang.

They could take their gang and their flirting in private, but that defeats the object. The pleasure is in effectively looking down their noses at everyone else, especially those they see as inferior or a threat. The communal act of ignoring others or putting others down helps to reinforce the gang.

They need to be public about their clique, or it's not a real clique. If they take it private it becomes a secret society, and where's the fun in that?

Of course, the occasional non-member can be honoured with a nod of approval if he/she flatters them. It's human nature.

Of course it's all harmless enough until it turns ugly.

You see it turn ugly on the Fab forum when some poor sod - especially a young newbie - dares to ask for advice or feeback on their profile. The gang will often relish kicking several shades of shit out of the poor sod by belittling him (it's usually a him because single males are plentiful and solitary, and ripping into them isn't seen as too much of a crime around these parts.

The irony is that the clique's criticisms of the newbie's photos and profile is often against a backdrop that their own are sometimes lacking.

When it comes to the tactic of them trying to stiffle threads (on Fab,just as on other forums, it tends to be by swamping the thread with mutual appreciation), the only thing you can do is just power through, ignore it and continue with the thread topic. Don't fuel the fire.

Anyway, I enjoyed sharing my observations.

Yes there are groups that know each other and have been here a while so they talk to each other

Then there are usually, short lived, groups who rail against it because they aren’t one of them. Starting threads about how unfair it is and they are going to tell their mum if the other kids don’t talk to them

I think it’s the posting as a gang (when one posts and then their friends start laying in there punches too, agreeing/laughing smileys/thumbs up or ‘you tell em’ type replies. That’s where the problem lies with me.

Or a thread is started directly referencing (or sometimes indirectly) with the intention of mocking someone or a group, for them and their friends to post.

Your right, people make friends, but some groups of friends are only intent is to keep that group exclusive. Not very welcoming in a public forum, is it?

But I'm not bothered, it's a free country, and I've paid for fabs, so if I want to join in threads I will, regardless. No but then would you walk into a pub, go up to a group of people you’ve not met before and expect them to welcome you in? Maybe not

I do agree that there are, small, groups who think that collectively attacking others is counted as ‘being here for fun on the forums’

Collectively though, the rest of the participants could just ignore them and they’ll soon give up.

I live in the north. (Manchester, I hate Manchester). We talk to anyone, and reply to anyone who says hello, I think that maybe a different view between you and, I see no problem with approaching a stranger and passing comment, and have no problem in striking a conversation with someone new who approached me. Maybe you would? Maybe ‘they’ would.

It's interesting that you refer to people getting ''the s**t kicked out of them'' on a forum. This kind of shows just how seriously some people can take it when someone else upsets them, they may literally feel injured.

The thing is though, no real physical harm has been done. At the end of the day,it's just words on a screen. If you really want it to reflect real life, would it really upset you if someone said something that you disagreed with? If they insulted you instead of answering your point?

Or would you just ignore and avoid them? Or bite back? Often the people who do the trash talking, say more about themselves than about their intended target.

We all need to develop a thick skin and broad shoulders,to some extent in real life,so why not on an internet forum?

I don’t even think it’s a thing of needing a ‘thick skin’. It’s more the observation (by the many it seems, not the few) that some posters just come on to be c**** and offer nothing of any real value to the discussion.

I’m really confused about some of the comments on this thread. I’ve been here for around 2 years now, with a short break recently. I still don’t know who the clique are.

The people who I tend to see being overly rude towards newbies who ask for advice, aren’t the forum regulars, but people who don’t post as often. I can’t refer to the clique, because I have no idea who’s in it. I see groups of people who have met and become close.

Then perhaps other people should join in the conversation more, instead of whinging "

People do try that but often get ignored, insulted etc at times so rarely post after that. Its very hard for new people to join in and feel confident enough to keep posting. I know many people that tried here but gave up because they felt unwelcome.

As a complete outsider that reads the forums.

I have noticed the same people tend to comment on the same topic daily with the same advice...

I’m not sure if they are intending to take over the thread... but just look at any single male post asking for advice...

The same people will say

Go to a social

Don’t put cock pics in your profile

Go to a club

Others will tell him

His profile wording stinks

His room is dirty

His clothes are dirty

When I read these threads I feel like the posters are a pack of lions and the original poster is a baby antelope ready for the slaughter...

Yes it does seem like that, however these threads appear more frequently than Princess Peach’s bowel movements. They are told the same things over and over again, because that is what single males have said worked for them on various other threads around the subject. The OP invariably ignores any advice given and either goes UNLOS or posts another identical thread within days. The majority that start those kind of threads think Fab is instashag, please note I said the majority. This site is single male heavy and it is going to be difficult for them to be successful in their goal, whichever hole they’re aiming for. Therefore, some effort beyond a few tinky winky pics and ‘message me’ on their profile is required

"As a complete outsider that reads the forums.

Therefore, some effort beyond a few tinky winky pics and ‘message me’ on their profile is required "

"I’ve noticed on some threads, it’s turned into two people just having a heated debate.

Others you can tell they know each other, so they all seem to quote and reply to each other. Everyone else ends up not contributing as it’s like a love in, but they seem to have to do it publicly and not by PM. You feel like saying, just get a room !

The forums are populated by about 15 people who chat rubbish, including word games and kiss suck or avoid etc. Wouldn’t those people be better off making a WhatsApp group?

Then perhaps other people should join in the conversation more, instead of whinging

People do try that but often get ignored, insulted etc at times so rarely post after that. Its very hard for new people to join in and feel confident enough to keep posting. I know many people that tried here but gave up because they felt unwelcome. "

I hate to think people feel unwelcome, but I still don’t agree that new posters get ignored or abused. I think people who post comments, which are very controversial on an emotive subject can sometimes bring forward a debate.

I’m not denying that sometimes people are shitty and annoying, but compared to other forums like Reddit, this place is okay.

Let’s put some perspective on this, there were in excess of 3000 threads in the lounge alone last month. The number of mods/admin is small and they are unpaid. They have a huge task to trawl through threads and keep the forum fun for everyone. They aren’t armed with the knowledge of who’s friends with who etc and which comments are ‘banter’ or malicious. Some rule breaking is obvious but there are a lot of comments made indirectly that are impossible to spot. Mistakes will happen things will be missed, that’s life. Everyone has access to the report button, use it to alert them of rule breaking etc and stay within the rules. There are always ways we as users can improve things, by making sure you’re not part of the problem is a start. Yes I know I don’t always get it right, shock horror, I’m not perfect
