Contact magazines, we still have a couple in the loft I think.

There were also carefully worded ads in personal columns of mainstream publications. I used to work for a publication that had a small section at the back for various "alternative" purposes. It was very popular.

Contact magazines, LOOT newspaper, Polaroid cameras

I remember it well.

Hard work, but if you made contact in those days, at least you knew they were genuine.... too many keyboard fantasists these days

A contact mag? Sounds like a great idea if it worked out for you. Someone should make a website to work similar to those magazines.

in the night garden

It was done with an elaborate system involving garden Gnomes and Pampas grass.

Pampass grass = We are swingers

Pampass grass and garden gnome pointing to street = We are swingers come and get a fuck

Pampass grass and garden gnome pointing to house = We are swingers but the wife is on the rags.

Pampass grass and brown garden gnome = We are swingers and prefer anal

I used to know a chap who ran a few various contact magazines, sad day when he had to shut up shop.

They had a perfect way to filter fantasists & time wasters, it was called "having to pay money to advertise"

Exactly that, plus everything by "snail mail"

Patience was the only required virtue

You still got fantasists and time wasters. Most if not all operated via p.o. boxes so the advertiser remained anonymous. Quite a few men had collections of Polaroid pictures of people that they had no intention of meeting. Fantasists and time wasters aren't an internet phenomenon, their task has just been made easier

There’s something in that.

Oh I agree, but it sure made it more of an effort, with the internet any weirdo can make a profile, and we did

used to love looking the personal ads in the local newspapers and you could spot those that weren't "looking for love" but something else.

When I first was introduced to the scene by an ex, it was near the death of the contact mag, and the advent of specific forums / chat rooms. Aaaaahhhh Memories.....

Though saying that, when I lived in Cardiff, and used to visit the "adult shop" the chap behind the counter used to print off his own sort of regulars only contact mag. From memory, you had to rent a pigeon hole off him for a few quid a week, and he acted as the postie for making sure messages got passed on to the regular advertising. Never did it, but it was quite enterprising lol

Contact magazines, usually bought in adult shops. Personal ads in Publications such as Loot requesting "physical times" or "casual relationship".

Swingers clubs existed but were more difficult to find.

Slough Windsor ish

Them was the days

Contact magazines, Forum magazine and I joined a Swingers group called The Honeycombe Club... For £80 a year you a got quarterly listings of all members ads, a private mailbox and invites to monthly 'sexy socials' at a little out of the way pub near junction 17 of the M4 where you got to meet and socialise with other members and arrange future meets with them.

A polariod camera was essential and everyone looked like their pics! There was no messing around or timewasting. It was all good clean honest fun.

Do those telephone chat lines still exist?

The ones where the intros rotate on a carousel and you leave little voice notes?

Years ago there was one called Houseparty that had a freephone number (hence cheap calls) and it was heaving!
