" My mum and step dad did it on the cheap. £100 or less each for their outfits and my step dad's clothes are ones he can wear again. My mum's friend made the cake, then about six of us went out for a meal and did the ceremony in a register office. Cheap as chips.

"There is no way I would spend thousands on a wedding. It's one day, and I feel it's who there that makes a day memorable, i.e. family and friends, not how fancy the venue, car, flowers etc are. An expensive wedding doesn't guarantee a successful marriage. Sorry OP, now back to funerals. I have no idea what makes them so expensive, I don't get it. A cardboard box will do me, I don't need solid oak, that shoot keep the price down " And you can actually have those and make a great saving

"My friend's mum recently passed away and she is currently arranging the funeral. It got me thinking how expensive it is and I just don't understand why that's so? Does it really cost thousands to cremate someone? I appreciate there are expenses but that much?! What other things do you think we pay too much for? And why do we do it? Social norms? No other choices? Showing off? " I think it's immoral how expensive it is and what they charge for. My nan was cremated in Milton Keynes as that's where she lived after moving out of London about 10 years previously. She didn't have many demands in life but the one thing she was adamant on was that she wanted her ashes to be buried with her mum and her son in London. The cemetery where they are buried charges my mum £25 simply because she wasn't cremated there! An admin fee allegedly..... What admin, she was dead and cremated. Disgusting.

What other things do you think we pay too much for? And why do we do it? Social norms? No other choices? Showing off? " I was driving through Los Angeles last summer and there were quite a number of billboards advertising low cost cremations, here's an example pulled at random off the internet: Cremation Service – $599 Included: Picking up of your loved one from a medical facility. Refrigeration prior to cremation. Filing the death certificate. Notifying the State and Social Security. Cremation container. Timely cremation. Temporary urn. Additional Services Available: Goodbye Gathering Decorative urns Shipping available (domestic only) Does not include: Government Fees Disposition permit – $12 (per final location of remains) Coroner fees (if required) Potential Other Fees: $100 pick-up at non-medical facility (if required) Mileage if outside the greater Los Angeles area There is an awful lot of money to be made in burial and cremation in the UK.

"but if you are organising a funeral you are not going to be in the right frame of mind to give the cost much consideration and you can hardly shop around like you do for kitchens." Precisely why the companies get away with it.

"You can transport a body in a cardboard box on the floor of a van if you want to and have some sort of memorial down the pub. " But, is that how you wish your life to be celebrated?

"A decent fitted bra. Because I need it. And the bloody big companies that think paying over £50 + for a bra is acceptable. It's not fun having big breasts sometimes! " They are rather marvellous though

I would rather people spend the money on something other than a posh way to dispose of my dead body. In fact they can just bury me in the garden for all I care. Nita
