Odd place to ask I suppose but hoping someone can help, I was involved in a car accident today, my car is certain to be written off. The other party admitted responsibility to myself and the police, we seemingly have no injuries beyond bruising and aches so not expecting compensation claims, any idea on how long it will take for the claim to be settled? My savings took a hit 3 months ago when I bought that one so don't have as much money to play with to get a new one just yet without going to bank of Mum and Dad.

Potentially weeks as insurance companies renage on parting with any payment. First is to get a hire car from them, when they do offer you something , reuse it as their just testing the water and trying to get you on the cheap. So refuse and get more dosh ..

It will vary from insurers I suppose.

Although do expect them to come with a compensation offer.

Someone drove into me on the motorway when coming to a stop for traffic build up, no serious injuries. Just a sore neck and back but I was offered £1700 compensation pretty quickly rather than drag the thing through court etc

Thanks for the replies, the police were really helpful, told me to keep rejecting the offers until we got a reasonable one that we're happy with. We have a hire car coming tomorrow paid by the others insurers, but I don't know how long for and don't want to take the mickey by having it too long.

Both Fred and I have sore necks and shoulders but it's our legs that took the brunt as the car seats jerked forward quite hard.

We were seen by a paramedic, I think my padding prevented any broken ribs, but I'll pay a visit to the Drs too.

Make sure you get physio, I thought my neck wasnt too bad until the physio got hold of me, it never quite healed properly even after discharge

I left it several years and even whilst having regualr deep tissue massages my neck still got really sore and stiff.

Ended up going to see a chiropractor and got told I was down to around 60% movement capacity in my neck.

6 sessions later everything was much better

I had my car written off last month, happened omna Wednesday night... car collected the following day, and a payment sent to me within 10 days of the claim starting.

Not all insurance companies drag their heels... some of them actually do the work you pay them for.

I think I'll feel much worse tomorrow, but I'll definitely go to the Drs, the police put us both down as having whiplash but to be honest I'm not really sure what whiplash is.

Going off memory you'll have your hire car at least till yours is officially written off but you should be able to blag a little longer. Your pay out will depend if when you except an offer. 1s you have you should get it very soon after. It's also possible they may not bother examining your car. It doesn't take much to write a car off anymore. They will offer you a low dig to start and if you refuse they normally put the ownes on you to prove the valuation wrong. It sounds like you've not had it long so original receipt but also find as many similar cars same age mileage model and speck you can and the price being asked. EBay may be a good start as most are top dollar on there you'll want the classified listing not auctions though. If your hurt and your in pain so you are take the injury claim to. If this was your fault you can be damn sure they would against you. Oh and 1 last little gem your fault or not and protected no claims or not expect your policy to go up next year so get every penny you can. Best of luck

Do NOT, repeat do NOT get involved with an accident management company who will want to provide you with a courtesy car on a credit-hire agreement. Your insurance company will probably want you to pay your excesses, and from experience that is a much better route to go down...less costly in the long run, and a LOT less hassle.

I had the misfortune to get involved with an accident management company called Auxillis...they're a bunch of absolute turds.

Get a thorough check up with the doctors as some whiplash injuries don't present straightaway, sometimes can take months even years for problems to surface from trauma. I had someone reverse into my car a 4 years back, damaging the door and their insurance was very quick to get things sorted. It was collected within the week and repaired and back with me within 5 days. Just be prepared for years of phone calls from companies trying to get you to put in imjury claims.

LV have been named best insurer by which. Let’s see if they stand up to the name.

You should keep the hire car until either yours is repaired or you have agreed and received payment for the total loss. With regards to the whiplash I would get it checked out

I’m sure the third party insurers will probably offer a payment for the injury to stop it going to court etc. As court fees are normally just as much as any injury award.

If the accident isn't your deemed fault, then you WON'T have to pay any excess.

My best advice on a quick resolution, is to keep ringing them up. You should have a named person handling your case, so ring them daily to get an update. Then if they say they're doing something at 2pm, ring back a 2.30 to check what the outcome is. If you keep talking to them, they will be keen to close the case.

Get a good idea of what it will cost to replace your car by finding something similar on Auto Trader, and ensure that you let the insurance company know that this is the value that they need to cover. It makes it harder for them to fanny about if you can say to them what it will cost to buy your replacement car.

If they offer you below the value you NEED to replace your car like for like, then reject it. Ultimately, you were not at fault and should not be out of pocket in ANY-WAY as a result of this accident. Keep a track of any additional expenses you incur and insist that these are recovered too.

Be firm and be fair. I had a similar experience, stood my ground, didn't elaborate on things and got a satisfactory payout after 4 weeks. In the meantime, keep the courtesy car, which should be paid for by the third party's insurers. Handing it back a couple of days after the funds hitting your account is not unreasonable.

In the meantime, actively look for a replacement.

Go to the doctors in case you get future aches and pains that can be attributed to the accident. Take the hire car for as long as you can - get everything in writing. Don’t accept the first offfer either.

I got my payout within a month of my accident luckily but I only had 7 days after the payout to keep the courtesy car so it was all a bit rushed to sort the new one.

If the insurance company are paying for a hire car then keep hold of it as long as you can. All while they are paying for a hire car they are going to be in a hurry to finalize the claim. I'm not reality they are probably paying more in storage costs for your car than they are paying for the hire car anyway.

Well I've got a hire car from tomorrow afternoon, and will be going to the Drs tomorrow morning, I'm not in huge amounts pain but very uncomfortable with my arms, ribs, legs and back. It was trying to lie in bed last night that I realised just how much of my body was affected.

OP, as others have said it us very important to get all your aches and pains recorded at your go. We had a very nasty accident some years ago, hit by a d*unk driver. We didn't go to hospital until the next day with aches and pains. It was found I had a fractured rib. At that point hubby had neck and back pain. He eventually had to give up work(builder) as a result of his injuries. So we persued and got a reasonable pay out for his loss of earnings etc. I also got a pay out for the rib. Hope you are both ok and good luck.

Our car was written off and we got a pay out quite quickly, depends on insurance company and what you're prepared to accept.

Thank you, the insurance company have been really good so don't feel too stressed at the momemt. I'm just incredibly grateful my other two children weren't in the car as they'd probably have broken their legs in the accident
