FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK FIFTEEN!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!

It's Week Fifteen! The weather may finally be turning milder (milder than sub-zero!) so it's about to get so much easier. Definitely. 31 sex kittens reported progress this week.

.

.

.

STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... Two dates for your diaries:

1) The next Fab Crap Runners' Club parkrun and social will be at 8.45am on Sat 5 May 2018 at the Great Denham parkrun near Bedford followed by coffee and gossip in a nearby pub. All welcome. Please RSVP on the thread.

2) The FCRC sex-club social will be on 8 June at Vanilla Alternative from 8pm. (Please note, you'll need to ensure you're a member of the club and that you've booked a place well in advance). Again, please RSVP.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

CRAP BEGINNERS:

Well done for joining the thread! The first step is the hardest and you've done that already! Keep us updated on your progress and cheer the others on. Everyone is welcome - even more so if you think you won't be able to do it. I'll list you here when you join.

bobbyd300 Newbie! Went out for a run earlier in the week. (Welcome! How did it go? Are you a regular runner?)

CAW83 Newbie! Runs in the gym. (Welcome. Any fitness activity is very welcome indeed).

Evesham cpl Newbie! On holiday so some running while there. (Welcome! That's dedication! Are you having a good time?)

Karma101 Newbie! Aiming to run 28miles this week. (Welcome! That's a lot of miles! Thanks for the advice you've been giving to less experienced runners. It's really welcome.)

sexybrunette Newbie! Did a Tough Mudder last year and wants to sort out another one. (Welcome! Those mud races look terrifying!)

SouthernerUpNorth Newbie! Running a half marathon in June but hasn't doing enough training. (Welcome. Don't worry - there's time. Talk to the coaches here and we'll cheer you on. Even if you walk it you're still fabulous!)

thornlee Newbie! Likes running 10kms. (Welcome to the thread. Let us know how you get on and feel free to advise less experienced runners.)

.

.

.

CRAP IMPROVERS (running more than you ever thought you could!)

Adam 1971 Running 5km three times a week and sprinting the last 100m. (Amazing - you've been so committed. Is it the sexual reward scheme that motivates you?)

BlueWonder About to start Week Six after struggling on Week Five. (Hiya! How's it all going? Don't give up - we've all struggled - this is why we're Crap Runners! You're one of us so don't quit! When are you running this week?)

Chasing waterfalls Running further and further but getting stiff. (Sounds like you got good advice. How far are you going now?)

Cheeky Chelt Managed three runs over the Easter break including 15 miles. (Impressive stuff! Well done)

HarryJones1975 Not feeling very well. (I'm sending round emergency nurses).

Lookingforlust Ran 5km on the treadmill and walked the dog seven miles! (That's loads of exercise - excellent! Hiow's the knee?)

MrBump2013 Started running with a group in Jan. Doing a 10k race next week. (Very good liuck - you'll be awesome!)

MrsTrellis Slightly lost my running mojo last week but I'm back on track with two under-40-minute 5kms. I'm ridiculously proud of this!

Nick007 Running the Bedford half marathon in September. (Five months to go. How's the training going?)

northerndels1000 Ran Week Eight Run Two - continuous running for 28 mins! (That's brilliant - you're at week nine now!!!!)

Psylocke Ran almost 6km. (Glad the knee is holding up).

signorina Swan instead of running due to the rain. (That's fair enough. How far do you swim?)

tigercub89 Is getting back to running this week. (How did it go? Did you manage a run?)

Topsy Rogers Getting faster and faster over 5km. Now at about 36-37 mins. (Well done - that's fantastic)

.

.

.

CRAP ELITES AND EXPERTS (trying to run the kind of distances that normal people drive... like marathons and stuff)

Belfastblond Did five miles in 36 minutes. (That's really fast. Very well done indeed!)

Bike Monkey Did his last parkrun before the Brighton Marathon. (One week to go! How are you feeling?)

Bitch_and_Twat Eating hot donuts on Great Yarmouth. (Oi - run! You're meant to be setting an example).

cotterabz Has done a couple of 10k and a 5k this week, and got a new 10k personal best. (Wowzers - that's brilliant! You must be really pleased!)

goodtimes_888 Advising on increasing distance. (Thanks for advising. How's your training going?)

LOST_DIVER Reducing his mileage prior to the London Marathon. (Not long now! We'll all cheer you on!)

nerdynympho Done 10 miles this week. (How's your training going? How was the sponsored walk?)

Only-Drew Been ill but has started again slowly. (Sorry you've been off colour. X)

SN1977 Done 6.5 miles of running making a total on 16.6 miles this week. (That's good - two thirds of a marathon!)

sparky4g Ran a half marathon recent and is finding it addictive! (Uh oh! Would you try a marathon?)

.

.

Thanks Mrs Trellis. Well done everyone!

Update in this weekend's runs:

Did some parkrun (one word, all lower case) tourism, Portrush, along the north coast of Northern Ireland, a full beach course, tough on the quads!

Got a 10k PB today around the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, first PB in 2 years.

Am I the only one who will wait at the end of his drive for up to 5 minutes for my watch to pick up the GPS signal, before I'll even consider starting my run?

Anyway, as I didn't give any updates to Mrs T last week, I'll do it here: 3 runs, 34 miles, sore but not broken knees.

Planning on 4 runs this week, 8/10/6/18. Might get some new running shoes too, mine have a fair few hundred miles in them, so probably due a change. Pretty sure my knees would appreciate it!

Well done everyone keep up the hard work

Ive completed week 2 this afternoon, it seemed easier halfway through than at the beginning, maybe because of heading towards home again. Week 3 will hopefully be started this week somewhere between work and sleep

I'm off to salsa tonight and circuits in the morning. Hopefully I can make the park run on 5th. Would anyone have a couch I can kip on if I come down Friday night ?

Just catching up. Sorry, I totally went off radar a couple of weeks ago. Had a major stress that I wouldn't be able to complete my run yesterday so went a bit quiet!

But!! I did it, I'm officially a marathoner I am still reeling a little x

Well as promised yesterday here is my update.... Finally managed week five run 3. 20 minutes unbroken running. It's not much in the grand scheme of things but it's a massive achievement for me and I am really proud of myself. Go me

That makes sense, if you don't do a good warm up then your body needs the first mile or so to "catch up" with your exertion level, once it dies that then you're coasting!

Brilliant.

Mrs T can you tell my emergency nurses to run faster as no sign of them arriving yet lol.

I have been in a sports shop today purchasing some running socks. Was completely bewildered by all the choices so went for a mid price single pair that are supposed to prevent blisters.

Update in this weekend's runs:

Did some parkrun (one word, all lower case) tourism, Portrush, along the north coast of Northern Ireland, a full beach course, tough on the quads!

Got a 10k PB today around the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, first PB in 2 years.

Well done on the beach parkrun (which is now off my list of runs to do) and your 10k pb. Fantastic time!"

Thanks SN, still buzzing

Some excellent posts, so proud of you guys

Was going to head out this morning first time in 5 days.... But I'm not

A) legs/butt started to feel OK again yesterday, but scared that I might do more damage, so one more day to ensure I'm ok

B) it's really pi**ing it down outside, which I hate running in

C) mindsets not there this morning

But tomorrow, is another day. And yes, I have downloaded a 10k run app as that's my new aim and yes I will stick to it

"Reporting in.....had a panic earlier as i wanted to update but the thread was closed because it was too big

Yay I'm finally a crap 5k runner and found the path that i can run constantly on but it kills!!

Ran today, not bad as I'm on my 4th 12 hour shift and on nights strava and c25k app both let me down, strava didn't find gps till i was half way round and c25k went into error half way but trusty samsung health and misfit kept going but in miles lol 3 miles done

I missed this. You bloody awesome, fabulous, running goddess!!! Really well done.

Can i just confirm, it's still not actual running as walkers are overtaking me but its continuous toddler running after pugs woggle lol "

That’s “Crap Running” which is what we’re here for!!!

It amazes me how hard it is given how slow I am. The other day I ended up behind a man who was out for a stroll. I was panting and grunting and, after about a hundred metres I had to force myself to do a burst of “speed” to get round him because otherwise I’d still be behind him now.

"Seriously need motivation this week "

You can do it. The hardest bit about running is the 5 minutes before you go.

Actually the running is hard too, but that’s because we’re crap at it. Don’t worry, you can be crap but still do it but you do have to run.

You’ll feel great when it’s over rather than the self loathing if you dodge it

I know this is the hardest bit but you have to push yourself and get out .....strangely it gets easier, dare i say enjoyable plus adam and twat keep saying there's sexual favours in there (btw I'm not offering I'm celibate you know )

Push yourself and let us know how you get on are you doing the C25k or your own plan?

So today was a strange day for me

My car was in for an MOT this morning so at 8.30 i dropped it off and walked 3 miles home and you know its not flat and it was chucking it down 4 hours later my car has failed big time so walked back the 3 miles, thankfully no rain.....my phone says I've walked 10 miles so i won't be going for my run today, I'll leave to tomorrow lol

But on a good note i pick up a new car on thu, I've had my old car for 9 years and its done me well, hopefully I'll have my new car just as long or preferably longer

Tonight's session with my running club is checking our fitness. We ran 1.5 miles, 400 meters, did burpees and something else at the beginning of autumn/winter. I'm expecting to be more unfit now, than I was then!

Burpees are evil. They are a bunny hop (hands on floor, jump your legs back and forward again) followed by a star jump.

I know I'm not as fit as I was then, I've spent most of the winter ill.

Breathing advice please (‘in and out’ is not what I’m after).

I think my perceived lack of progress is less to do with my legs ability to run and more to do with my lung capacity.

I’ve never suffered any physical aches and pains since starting in Jan at all. My 5k on Sat was about 36 mins but for the first time I had to do some power walking to get round.

Tonight I did 3k jog/sprint at an ave pace of 6:55km and I felt I just couldn’t move enough oxygen. I could have run some more but I’m wheezing like I did when I first started.

Shall I continue to do that split speed to improve my lung function? Is there anything else I should be doing?

You probably won't want to here this, but slow down! For reference, when I run my average pace is ~ 7:30/km. Slower pace means you can be on your feet for longer, will build strength and stamina, and crucially will be working your aerobic system much more, which is exactly where you appear to be struggling x

None of what I’m achieving is making any sense. I want to stay on my feet longer but simply can’t and it’s nothing to do with what my limbs are capable of.

I’ve been doing 5k for weeks now and it’s no easier, I struggle with every one and the only reason I did it faster than Bedford was that I walked bits of it and that was the first time I’d ever done that.

Even ‘running’ at 8min/k I can’t talk and I struggle.

I’m out at least three times a week so surely by now I must be able to run longer or faster?

"Breathing advice please (‘in and out’ is not what I’m after).

If you slow down, your lungs aren't working so hard. An easy pace should be where you can hold a conversation with someone. That means you have more energy to run. When I ran regularly, my half marathon pace was about 2 minutes slower per mile than my 5 and 10k pace.

I'm no expert and offer no advice, all i can give is what happens to me.....i can't talk when running/jogging and i do a lot of walking and if I'm going uphill i still can't talk but one thing i have noticed is i breath deeper, i feel i am using more of my lungs lol and in my health tests my lung capacity is more....so god knows why i can't talk and its maybe better for anyone around

I cant talk when jogging either i can just about splutter thanks when people move out my way. And thats going slow. I dont think its anything to be too concerned about.

I find unless i really focus on my breathing my breaths become shallow even at the start and i have to consciously focus on it. But nearer the end of a jog section thats out the window and i struggle.

I want to say, just be patient and it will get better. However, it could be a sign of asthma (not knowing what your fitness levels were before you started running). Get checked out by the nurse at the gp and they'll at least put your mind at rest.

Are you still running with a club? If so, ask the coach to keep an eye on you during the session and give some advice.

A few things to bear in mind...are you worse better in colder weather? Colder/dryer air can irritate lungs. Do you 'warm up' with jogs/brisk walks or launch straight in? A bit of prep work can help. As mentioned how much lung capacity are you using, I often have to coach deeper breathing as most people tense up & restrict their breathing & use only the top third of their lungs...that said practicing deeper breathing whilst running does take work. Most athletes do their slow runs too fast & their fast runs too slow, try the Jack Daniels (not that one) run pace calculator to establish paces for your training runs as a guide. Hope this helps.

Week: god knows where, run: odd one lol

Ok so starts my warm up walk and feel my calf a bit tight, assuming its from yesterdays travels i get into my jog but it just seems to get harder, not because of my pain but i feel my body slouching and it feels like a slog.....i end up walking a couple of times then half way i decided to run not jog but actually running, ok not for long but it felt good so i walked a bit then ran again!! So i starts thinking...i want to change from a jog to a run (omg! Who started this milarky? Mrs T!!! What are you doing to my head?? have you seen what you're producing.....and breath )

Anyway.....my thoughts are starting again on c25k but instead of jogging I run and build up that way....or is there another way? Or have i completely lost my mind?

Im nowhere near the end yet infact only just begun....but it is something thats crossed my mind (i cant help look ahead, no matter how much ill struggle to get through to start with)

Surely if its helped to progress from not jogging at all to being able to jog for 30 minutes straight, then it would help starting again and going faster.

Obviously going faster means your working your body harder and it needs to build up to doing that again as it did initially.

It makes sense in my head at least

Thats what i thought but I'm no expert lol

I have got to jogging 30 mins straight but only just and my uphills aren't beating me so i was just going to carry on, maybe go longer once i felt comfortable but the run today felt exhilarating lol

I don't ever think too far ahead, all i did was just concentrate on the c25k goal for that day and repeating if i couldn't do it....the first 20 mins on week 5 i think, took me a few attepts

I guess its a case of doing whatever feels right for you. If you get more sense of enjoyment from the faster spurts go for it.

I cant help it, i have no doubt that i will get stuck there for a while too, maybe even before that....but i am determined to get through the programme (hopefully before my 5km obstacle run). Buf if not i'll just keep going until i do

I did it, I did it, I did it.

I got my tooshie out the door and started run 1 of my new app.

It feels like I'm back to square one on the C25K, as there was a lot of walking in between running, but it says there's only 14 runs before I can do 10K

I don't feel like I've done much, but I need this to retrain my brain that I'm not Forest Gump and cause myself mischief again! 3.9km done, better then nothing

Now coaches advice please, do I skip a couple of weeks to where I feel I am capable of running or should I start from the beginning like I'm doing???

Not the song you're thinking of (I have a feeling my one is a cover/sample), but I have Sugerbabes in my head now...

"Just tagging where I am up to

Are you feeling any better Harry?"

Didn't wake up until 0845 today oops and felt very washed out. Felt better after sitting down all day at work but then had to cycle a bit to get a lift I wangled home which wore me out again. x x x

So, who is doing parkrun tomorrow (or, even more impressive, something on your own)?

Good luck to everyone who’s out running today!

I did another 5k last night and it was faster than before but I was absolutely exhausted. Sometimes I long for a treadmill where I can just get used to running at a fixed speed and not have to worry about my pace changing and going up bloody hills (ok, gentle inclines)

Well done everyone, parkrun done in the fastest time I've done one since I restarted running (although my official time is 30 seconds slower )

Treadmill running is horrible because of the constant speed!

Well done though!

Just back from a 5k run. It was warmer than usual and I found the last km so hard that I ended up shouting ‘I can’t take anymore!’ to my running app when it announced I had only run 4K. It’s tough sometimes - 38.39 mins.

Good luck! You'll enjoy it. It's the first bit that is scary, having to trust the person (and equipment) holding the rope.

Went out for a run this morning after working a late shift and having 4 hours sleep Thinking the worst.....

But dragged my daughter out of her pit and made her come with me for a bit of motivation, thinking she's young, fit and will make me work hard and wake up!

But I had more energy than she did! She got tired and wanted to stop smug mother that I am and a bit of piss taking later, that's made my day lol
