Work Stress and hard boss

Hi folks, I’ve started a new job. To brief I interviewed with the managing director whom is not managing me. He has In ways fibbed about the role with regards work load and tasks. So I’m not numbered with my boss whom is very over bearing and a perfectionist. I’m making silly errors and I simply can’t get out of the rut. Stuff is building up. It’s a complex one as it’s a family run firm and I know the family. Any advice?

speak to your immediate manager about your concerns. stress that you can do the job but you are having a little difficulty adjusting to the workload nd ask if there is anything he can do to help.

hi mate this is where it’s complex. My immediate boss is the problem. I can do the job I 100% can. The issue is the guy who was in my role prior was there 22 years. So 1) he could do the role no issues 2) they’ve also found he was not updating items such as price lists. So I’m stuck in the position that I am in a new role with a high work load, systems I’ve not used and I’m

Being expected to rectify previous issues. It’s draining!

I get that, but a good manager will support not criticise, but they can only support if you talk to them

as an employer I would welcome someone coming to me expressing their concerns in a new role, then appreciate that they will be having some difficulties and provide extra training,.

your immediate line manager has had it too easy with having a very experienced person for so long.. now he needs to step up and train you correctly..

This. If someone is struggling with something regarding their job role, I'd prefer to know about it at this point, rather than 10 minutes after the shit hits the fan. It shows you're being proactive.

thank you so much. That’s helped. I’m not shirking away from the work. I just need a bit of help. The company is small to medium sized so it’s all hands to the pump. But this guy my direct line manager whom would have been my predecessor boss as well. But these two guys worked together for near 18 years. It’s complex and I feel

Isolated. It’s horrible horrible feeling. And very hard to explain in ways. My direct manager has poor ppl skills. He’s not a teacher trainer. He’s a doer he does stuff and works morning noon and night. But he’s very much “you do the work and I’ll review it” that’s what’s done and then he changes the work. And has a wee bite at me about stuff I’ve done wrong

Take away his flaws.

Write down the things you are having lack of support with

Ask for a meeting, dont get mad. Ask patientally confidently for support and extra training if needed.

Ask for a note taker so the meeting can be logged

I’m going to note down all the tasks I’ve to do in work. Then sit down with company owner. I can’t let this silly mental torture continue.

Do you have regular reviews as you’re new to the role? If so, that’s a good opportunity for frank discussions.

Also, do you just get instructions from him verbally ? I’m just thinking if it changes afterwards, it would be helpful for you to have it as an email. I was trying to understand does it get changed because the client wants something different or is he doing it to make it look like you’ve done something wrong? Or maybe they’ve always worked that way?

Are you his only team member?

Hi, no I’ve literally been fired in a corner. Told to “look on YouTube on how to use the system”.. reviews no. We never sit down and have never. I’m

There 5 weeks and the conversations are frank. His instructions are light and wafty. His great saying is “ grab the file and read up on it”. It’s totally draining. No I’m not his only team Member. He in essence manages all the staff ( mananges is a lose term). He’s a control freak. Likes his hands on everything but will not give clear instruction on

How he wants a task complete as in the objectives. I’m

Completely at a lose. If it was a large organisation with a HR department I’d go to them. But they don’t and this guy is the company grafter. He’s a very intelligent guy and works hard. But he’s just a ball buster whom is unhelpful

It does sound like it’s difficult. Watching you tube isn’t ideal, not exactly a written procedure to follow.

Maybe, if you have to do that and you do a job, based on that, write down your own procedure so it’s there for the next time.

You’re going to have to decide if this job is worth the stress, some jobs aren’t.

My thoughts were a written procedure or action plan. So it’s a b c. My gut feeling is the guy is a complete control freak and expects everyone to be on his level. I want this job. I want to succeed in it. But I don’t want to have to try and over turn an irrational control freak to succeed. My gut thought is 1) if there is two ways to do something ask his imput early and record it. 2) take my time, breath and do my job as best I can. 3) Ask

His advice daily and gain his trust. At this point he simply does not trust me
