So here’s the thing, I don’t really know how to do makeup. As a consequence I don’t really wear anything. I’d love to be more creative with eye colour and liner and maybe a bit rockabilly. Where to start? How to learn?

Millions of video tutorials on YouTube, follow some makeup artists on Instagram, and just practice. I was exactly the same up until around a year ago, and while I still don’t consider myself artistic when it comes to makeup I do know more about what suits me and I have the confidence to try a new look x

I own so many things but I just look at them and don’t know what to do! I’m also a little fearful as I’m a face toucher and anticipate I’d just smudge everything. I use a little powder and that’s it. I always forget to put lip balm on!

What is all this "contour" stuff about?

It just looks like dark and shiny cakey lines on your face

Bloody awful!

Also false eyelashes are a bit porn star-ish

Even some eyeshadow is wrong.

I'm not into makeup at all - I think a natural look is best.

Especially if you're young - youth is beautiful x

I have zero idea what foundation to use and that’s exactly it, nothing I think really stays on or makes sense without the base. I seriously don’t know how to start.

I’d love to do some really colourful rockabilly eye liner and coloured eyes and cherry red lippy - just once in a while.

I went to Debenhams and got some advice there, because I suffer with roseacea on my cheeks the blusher I used was just adding reds. She showed me a goid foundation to tone it down and a bronzer. But yes you tube has some good videos to help x

Contact your local further education colleges hair and beauty department and ask if any of the students need volunteers for their assessments.

Another thing you could try is asking for a demo in one of the department stores or Body Shop. Specifying exactly what you want or you'll come out looking like a modern day Barbara Cartland

Do you have a friend who’s knowledgable on make up? They’re good to go shopping with. A lot of it is trial and error.

Never been great with make up myself just stick to tinted moisturiser, and some lip balm day to day. Add some mascara and lipstick if it's a dinner or night out.

Had my make up done professionally for a friend's wedding and didn't recognise myself. Amazing what some people can do with make up. Guess it's just takes some practicing.

I’d like to know how to do it all for choices though. I love drawing and painting and have many creative ideas - just get a bit stuck when I get to my face! Or put off, maybe.

Don’t be afraid to visit makeup counters too and ask them to recommend looks for you. They’ll often give you application tips and techniques x

Estee lauder and mac both did a "teach" make up session for me and the cost was off set when I bought a product. Was really worthwhile, they did half a face and got you to do the other to practice. But my 13 year old daughter says YouTube!! Lol

Mrsdpt has ridiculously good skin and face shape, cheek bones, huge eyes etc.

That she can pull off very little make up. I think she just wears a bit of mascara most days.

To fit with the modern day crowd you need to work on your eyebrows, aim for a Nike tick and you’ll be along the right lines

I don't really wear make up in everyday life, very often just tinted sunscreen and a bit of blusher. A few years ago when I was swimming 5 times a week I had my lips and brows tattooed so it's a sutle colour but a bit more than natural as I like quick and go. You tube is good for some techniques

Just try out different things until you find a look that suits you. I've experimented lots. My workday makeup takes less than 5 minutes but going out makeup can take about an hour. Watch YouTube for techniques then practice and adapt to suit

There are some YouTube videos out there where they don't always use foundation. If you think you don't need it, don't use it.

I do hate all the contouring and highlighting videos. I may not like the shape of my face, but I wouldn't want to give someone a shock if I changed it through make up!

There are some eye make up only tutorials on there which is good. Buy a palette of eyeshadows that you like (if you have a large Boots near you, Nyx has a good quality cheap range) then search the palette name on YouTube and it will give you loads of ideas.

I only have one style and do that badly. Half my problem is terrible eyesight so I can't do eyeliner properly. That and baggy eyes

They sell it in Superdrug Lottie stamp it's called 6 pounds Smokey eyes put darker colour in both corners of your eyes then a lighter colour in the middle of your eye and blend with eye shadow brush hope this helps

There are some YouTube videos out there where they don't always use foundation. If you think you don't need it, don't use it.

I'm so shit at blending eyeshadow and all that, so if I'm going to wear eyeshadow it will be neutral shades.

When I went to my pre wedding make up thing she might as well of put a mask on me...it was awful.

I'd go to the Mac counter for a demo if I was you and defo you tube, my daughter is very good at 12!!!

Someone said to me accentuate either your eyes or lips, never both. And put your foundation on after your eyeshadow so you can wipe off any mess!

I would say just play around until you get the look you want. Spend a afternoon just playing with the make up you have. If you don't usually wear foundation go for something like a bb cream or a tinted moisturiser.

I too am rubbish at it. But if I have a few hours to spare I have been known to watch YouTube tutorials and practice and even managed to put false eyelashes on once. And I have heard the advice about lips or eyes and it is good advice (my mum always said so and she is a girlie girl who made me get contoured at a makeup counter once - she laughed, I looked like a petulant weird version of myself with massive eyes and a pointier nose).

Go to boots and speak to the make up girls. There's hundreds of them. Or book a make up lesson. Get vouchers on wowcher or itison for a tenner. The tutorials on line don't really know your skin or colour match and are a bit ott

Failing that a simple foundation...foundation brush..mascara...blusher and lip gloss is a good start. Dot the foundation on and rub it in with the brush. Apply mascara...blusher and lip gloss x

YouTube and lots of practice.

Good brushes and good foundation are where to spend money. If your base looks pants then doesn't matter how good you do everything else, it will always be the first thing people notice. The rest you can make do with cheaper brands.

Hooded eyes means that you can barely see the eyelid because the top part of the eye folds over it. A very poor description, but I hope that makes sense.

I use estee Lauder double wear foundation, it's great stuff. Lasts for ages and you only need a little bit. The bigger branches of Boots have a counter where they colour match and give you a free sample.

Any one of them would be happy to show you how to apply make up ( i used to do it when i worked for miss selfridge years ago) far better than youtube clips as more personal to you

Go to Boots makeup counter, get a patch test, tell them your budget etc.

Use a good moisturiser, apply foundation by brush, follow with a loose powder to set, then apply your preferred colour of blush, then eyes, then invest in a good mascara, the one I swear by is a L'Oréal double extension, nothing beats it in my experience, as you can apply however many coats you want with no clogging! I have tried many over the years but always come back to this one!
