After visiting a well know high street store yesterday I was asked to give my address and e mail. To the shop assistants incredulity I refused as when I asked why they didn’t really have an answer as to why they needed it?

I thought for a minute they were going to refuse me service completely.

Do you give yours?

No. Even before recent data breaches. Some people seem to think I'm odd for reading things before I sign them. OK, people think I'm odd for other reasons too.....

If it's a shop I like a lot and will use frequently, then it's fine. Can be good for special offers, loyalty rewards etc.

you get asked in Curry’s sometimes, i say no thanks, but they don’t kick up a fuss about it, just carry on with the transaction.

Halfords do it all the time and get a little pissy when you ask why.

'It's for your receipt' after they've just handed you a paper one

I bought a watch from beaverbrooks last year, got an email with a prize from them.

Two nights in a hotel. First day go watch Manchester United train, second day go watch the match. All expenses paid.

They also sent me £50 vouchers at Christmas

I am flexible, if I want junk mail e.g. screwfix catalogue then yes, if not I either refuse or sometimes for a laugh give them their shop address, most will key it in blindly.

it isn't for your receipt. it's for marketing purposes.

the receipt is a decoy thrown at you to say yes.

it's also unlawful for companies to use your information for marketing purposes without your consent, so it's being done against your knowledge.

It's a racket to collect customer data.

New Look and Debenhams have tried this one on me - they'll email me a receipt.

No thanks.

I don't want any more e mails about buying more stuff I don't need!

So I never give it out.

Just remember they're robotically programmed to ask for your e mail you don't HAVE to give it to them

I said what for ?

Just so we know how many shoppers live locally or not.

I said NO.

She said - no problem.

Thing is ....... I could give them any old postcode but.... they can have my real one if they want to pay me.

How many loyalty cards do people have?

The information gleaned from them is far more useful than your postcode or e-mail at checkout, which are recorded on the database of the loyalty card anyway.

I've been asked the first half of my post code this is only for them to determine how far shoppers travel, would not give my email as this is data capture and I'm not interested in their special offer emails on a daily basis

I,'ve given my email in Argos for the e receipt as its easier to keep than the paper one. I would never give out my home address though, unless it's for a refund. If buying a TV though, the shop are required by law to ask for address.

The thing that really pisses me off though is being asked if I would like the offer chocolate or sweets x xxx

They may as well read out credit card details in full publicly, alongside that other personal information, just to ensure that your data is out there. I've often heard people relaying their phone number, which must be a boon for any creep in the vicinity too.

I might give an email address to an appropriate retailer but otherwise I'm a little restrained in what information I'm willing to have out there, when it's not to my benefit.

If a shops asks for your postcode it's to do with the foot fall in the shop and over time will tell them that it's a good idea to have a new shop in an area. The upper class (W) supermarket will do this to find their ABC 1 customers.

I have a spare email specifically for this kind of stuff. It's not connected to me in any other way, and is only used for shops etc. That way my true email isn't harvested out, and I don't get spammed all the time - but I have an electronic record if I need it (mainly when I lose the paper receipt!!!)

I was once on a quiet train and some guy was on the phone giving them his full credit card details.

I don't give my email or address to shops and don't have loyalty cards either. I'm polite when they ask though. I've worked in a shop and grumpy customers made me sad.
