As it's Easter: I'm genuinely intrigued if there are any very religious people on here, and how they square their lifestyle with their faith - as most religions are very conservative about sexuality. A bit serious, but I've had some choccies too!

I think you'd have a problem just as most surveys do. How many liars say they are religious. How many just think they are religious but don't follow the teachings. etc etc etc.....

It's easy to square your lifestyle with a fuck it attitude to the rules.

I’m pretty religious , which seems to be frowned upon on here .

But it’s odd that when a ships is about to sink , or a plane about to crash , how many believers suddenly appear !

I have no issue whatsoever in choosing to swing as well as being religious .

We’re religious. I do struggle to come to terms with this conflict in my life which often makes me question my faith. Mr doesn’t worry about it and seems to calmly have both.

For me personally, it’s a case of I can’t help it. The desire for the lifestyle is so strong that I do it anyway, and will try and justify it to myself whatever way I can. It’s not hypocrisy - it’s not like I’m judging others then going and doing the same things myself.

I am not sure why there would be any need to reconcile this lifestyle with your faith. They are two entirely unrelated issues provided your keep your private life private.

In my experience religious people tend to be more tolerant than those who boast about being open minded .

I think religion is largely about upbringing. That is generally, you are what you parents were. I (Mr) come from a devout Catholic family. All boys school, mass every Sunday etc..

It gave me a great Christian upbringing: do unto others etc. I could not think of a better motto to live life by. Let’s not forget when St Peter arrived in Rome, they burnt people in tar on posts to illuminate the streets.

But the church went too far in trying to control its congregation.

From the very little they mentioned about the subject, for my parents, that wonderful physical bond was sacrificed because the church told them it was wrong, just to enjoy for the sake of it. There were times, my Mother told me, when they would have loved to enjoy each other, but their devotion to the church meant they could not. I think in later life she wondered if that sacrifice was a) right and / or b) worthwhile.

For me, it really meant a life of enquiry, intrigue about girls and sex and an insatiable desire for all things sexual. For everything I was told was wrong I wanted to do! I cannot say if that is a hard wired thing or a function of my upbringing.

And when, with my wonderful wife of many years, we enjoyed the pleasure of other people together I felt liberated, and still do, to experience such a great thing. But that is not just religion is it? Our moral code suggests if you are married you should not indulge in the pleasure of others and for those that do, opprobrium. Complex!

It's a great question you pose OP. It's amazing how much passion the question of religion provokes. It shows there's intolerance whatever beliefs or none that people have.

As it's Easter I assume you're referring to the Christian faith? Thomas Moore (a former Catholic priest) has written a book called "The Soul of Sex" for anyone wanting to delve more into this.

He argues that sex is part of what we are and this is reflected in the Bible. We should celebrate it. It's the Church which has applied moralistic judgements, and many derived from Victorian values.

So far as I can see the only condition is no dishonesty in relationships? Others may have particular references which they think pose a problem though ...

I don't believe in "God". I'm not religious. I would NEVER mock, shame or try and convince someone they're wrong to believe what they do.

Also, religion is very personal and it's all about interpretation. Two people of the same religion may not necessarily have he same beliefs.

I love cultural/religious differences. They're one of many things that make our world so interesting.

Acceptance of other's beliefs is the route to world peace. Not that it'll ever happen. People are assholes.

As you say OP most religious faiths are conservative in their beliefs and teachings and therefore, to me, you can't be both a true believer and a swinger at one and the same time.

I'm not saying you should agree with them. There are many beliefs others have that I don't agree with. But I respect people's right to believe whatever they wish to believe. If we all worried more about ourselves and how we operate than others the world would be a better place.

People who actively harm others based on their beliefs is a different matter I think.

Personally I identify as a Christian (Catholic) and yes I do understand that being promiscuous is frowned upon within my religion, strictly speaking. However for me my faith is a moral compass rather than a completely rigid set of rules and I believe that what I do does no harm to anybody else, physically or spiritually. Of course I could be wrong and I have to accept myself as being a sinner and that I could be held accountable for my choices and actions someday.

In my experience,religious people (and just people in general) believe whatever they want to believe,whatever it suits them to believe. It should come as no surprise,therefore,that even the most devout could interpret teachings in a way that justifies,excuses and lets them off the hook if they don't stick absolutely to those teachings.

It happens in many ways,some much worse than just a bit of extra curricular shagging.

However once your beliefs start bordering on to nonsense like can't eat fish on a Friday, keep a certain day holy, don't eat this animal, slaughter it this way, keep a distance from menstruating women, slice your child's forskin off you've deservedly lost my respect for your nonsense and frankly the fact your upset about anybody saying anything bad about the nonsense you hold dear is your own problem

I'm not trying to be picky but that's like saying I think we should all tolerate Nazis providing they don't gas Jews obviously!.

The church of England has undergone reformation after reformation trying to out all the stuff people think is unacceptable,I mean they only just accepted women as bishops and even then it's caused a split in the "believers" because quite a few don't want women and that's not a man thing, there's plenty of women who don't want women bishops and we've not even got into marrying gay people, bejesus that's like asking Nazis not to wear leather.

So again spiritual people who have what might be called crazy beliefs I have no problem with, religious people who say I'm Jewish,CoE Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, noooo not on my watch, there crazy nonsense should not be tolerated.

To quote Doug Stanhope everybody goes nuts over right wing Nazis but they had their ass handed to them in in 10 years, whereas the Catholic church has persecuted hundreds of millions of people for 1500 years and for some bizarre reason we tolerate this crazyness.

I get people believing in creators and afterlives, it's a great hypothesis.

However to start assuming that the creator of the universe is somehow concerned about wether or not I wank on a particular day of the week is just fucking silly and if he's evil enough to condemn me to an eternity of agony for that time I coverted my neighbors ox, well fuck him/her/it/the matrix.

i agree, faith seems to be a take it, when there is a problem pray leave it all rest of the time. Get married in church never go again, its very convenient.

I dont have a problem with swinging, I would have more of a problem with unfaithfulness which I dont think swinging is.

How is it odd? If a person thinks they are going to die they will do anything out of desperation. Most people aren't murderers but if they had to kill to save their own life they would. It's survival instinct, it doesn't mean they really believe.

Whether being a swinger is compatible with being religious depends on the religion. There are a huge number of different religions. I have for a long time noticed that most self-proclaimed religious people operate a "pick-and-mix" approach - just practising the aspects that appeal to them. For example, when I was at university, there was a large and active "Christian Union". I always wondered what proportion adhered to the churches' teaching on chastity before marriage. I have often got the impression that people claim to believe in a particular set of values in order to gain some kind of kudos. "Champagne socialists" are another example. I can respect anyone's beliefs providing they live by them. Unfortunately, most people are hypocrites.

For those who are wondering, I am an atheist.

Religious intolerance and secular intolerance are equally bad and two sides of the same coin. Intolerance usually leads to harm as shown by the Nazis and some religious fundamentalists as well as many others with faith or none.

In a tolerant society, therefore, it seems to me that the only people who need to decide whether their religious beliefs are compatible with swinging are the individuals themselves provided their beliefs do no harm.
