Proud Of Our Past?

Two fantastic programmes on tv tonight, one on the Spitfire and one on the Mosquito. Without doubt both planes were pivotal in defeating Germany in WWII. But, are we proud or embarrassed to talk about such things these days?

Is it patriotic or racist to be proud of history?

I can't see how anyone could think that it's in anyway racist to celebrate such achievements and to remember those who gave their lives fighting fascism..

Completely proud of certain aspects of our past.

The Second World War being one.

Loved the wooden wonder my favourite plane.

Depends which history you are proud of.

Helping in Defeating fascism is absolutely something to be proud of. Other wars not so much.

Nothing wrong with being patriotic as long as its not blind patriotism.

Fully agree, our role in the African slave trade or East India Company obviously not proud, shouldn't forget though or try to change history.

That's going quite a bit further back but it is our history non the less, like it or loath it

I think it's about remembrance, remembering the lives lost on both the Allies, the Axis and the civilians that were taken as collateral damage. It's important to remember these times in history, so it doesn't happen again.

The past is the past, and no generation should carry the burden of their ancestors, but we must remember.

I'm a massive WW2 era aircraft geek, so don't get me started on that subject

Wow, now they're things I'd like to get in!

When the Lancaster flew in from Canada via Iceland it directly flew overhead down the full length of my street, although I dared to hope I'd glimpse it, I saw it all the way, one of the best feelings I've ever had.

Our role you mean the blockades to prevent slaves being transported from Africa to America or the large sums offered to slave traders to set up new businesses. No other nation has done so much to bring the end of slavery as the UK has. If we are going to bring this subject up let's teach the whole thing and not just the bits to try and make people feel guilty about something they have no involvement in

That would include the re-enactment of indenture then. More died on the crossing from India to the West Indies than in the slave trade and no one mentions it. It ended 101 years ago but no one knows this.

I am proud to be British, proud of some of this rich history, the part my antecedents played in that success and I'm glad that their involvement is finally being recognised in WWI and WWII.

Pivotal was the yanks joining up - but nothing was possible without the Russians; without them we'd now be better engineers & have a faster, more comfortable & far cheaper transport infrastructure.

Oh & we'd be more punctual & actually able to play football!

What a load of nonsense this thread is. It's reads like a Daily Mail 'they're trying to ban Christmas' story.

So long as we acknowledge that a good number of the German people had little idea of what was going on during the Nazi regime, and that tragically a lot were innocently caught up in the crossfire in bombing raids for example - I think we have the right to be proud of the servicemen who gave their lives to protect and liberate.
