Sigh.

So two months ago, the week before pay day, I noticed £3 had gone missing from an inside pocket in my bag at work when I left it in the staffroom. As it was such a small amount I made the mistake of not reporting it and continued to leave my bag in the staffroom. However, today (once again the week before pay day) £10 has gone missing from my purse although my purse was back in my bag.

There was only a limited (four hours) window that someone would have been able to get access to my bag, and only a limited amount of staff were in the building at the time.

I'm gonna talk to my manager about it tomorrow, but has anyone been through something similar and what came of it? I hate the fact that I can't trust my colleagues.

Not good. Makes you suspect everybody. Report it to your manager and then make sure you lock your valuables awaye if you can.

I don't think it's a colleague that works in my department, which is kind of a plus. My coat and bag are going into the manager's office from now on!

I had this once in my work place and got security to go through bags when clocking out.Caught a few people out.Best too have lockers and lock everything away ,trust nobody but yourself.

I wouldn't allow 'security' to go though my bag.

Is this in your staff's contracts ?

Get a black light security pen and mark a £5 note then leave it in your bag. Tell your manager when it goes missing then she can search everyone to find the thief.

Was years ago when worked in supermarket and people were on camera and when the people were clocking out they were searched .police were present .

Had this happen in various pubs I have run, cash or stock, it doesn't matter, still theft, it's crap when you can't trust your work colleagues or staff

I'd report it to your manager definitely, if someone isn't trustworthy then your manager needs to know. I also agree you should leave some sort of trap, if it were me I'd put some monopoly money in with a F**K YOU written on it, just to piss them off. I bet it would make them turn red and perhaps you'd find out who it was

We've had a lot of it at work, someone stole a leaving collection during a fire drill, someone had their bike stolen. The cafeteria has to lock up the drink fridges when they close, I'm obviously not going to disclose where I work but it would sound even worse if I did.

Can you not keep your bag with you? If not, your employers ought to supply lockable lockers for private things.

They have to lock fridges up at my work too. We had thefts from coat pockets so they searched all the lockers with HR present. Now they have signs up warning that if there are any further thefts they will search all lockers/ people.

Not quite the same, but when I used to work on site, I always took a 2 pint bottle of blue top which generally lasted me all week. Now I'm not one to begrudge anyone a drop of milk to make a brew, but sometimes come Tuesday dinnertime, there was only about 1 pint left (most of the other bottles were green top).

I put a note on the fridge saying "If you can't afford to buy your own milk, then ask your boss for a pay rise". That had little effect and ma milk kept disappearing

So I put Plan B into action. I bought a 2 pint bottle, drank about half a pint of it and topped it up with piss. That soon stopped the bastards

Don't do anything that could harm someone - it could be illegal. You've done the right thing by handing over responsibilities to your employer, to resolve however they wish to. It can happen anywhere.

I've come across this problem from a managers perspectve in the past (mostly stealing from

the business but in a few cases there were handbags dipped!). There is so much legislation protecting employees from being watched that it's an absolute pain in the ass to deal with and the manager will have to be very careful in how he goes about it as there is always the possibility that it's a staff member!

Best thing to do IMO is what you have done, speak to your superior about it and nobody else and just be careful with cash!

I've even had people steal a charity box on more than one occasion from a business I was co running... There's not many people couldn't get a loan of feckin £3 to feed themselves until payday so it's baffling how people can stoop so low!

Thankfully the loss so far is only £13, I've been done for exponentially more than this so pay yourself on the back for being cautious with your money!
